We don't listen to Japanese music because it's painfully derivative of Western music and each other. If you've heard one, you've heard them all, 99% of the time.

I think MOTFD is youtube algorithm core for people who have just discovered Japanese music.
Yes, I used to like them too, but they're not that good.
The first anon is also right. I've been listening to japenis music for 4-5 years now and I have discarded >90% of the artists that I had listened to previously because of how samey they are.

Japan's idea of nu metal is pretty neat, especially when they get experimental.

Yeah, I'd say this is their last great-from-start-to-finish album.
Honestly, I've been listening to LTS for over a decade at this point and nothing hits quite like them.
I love their debut dearly. It's perfect. Still pretty raw, with that spiky, almost School Girl Bye Bye-ish, guitar tone but way more technical. So fucking good.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_yVEosFdmM
TK's first solo album is wonderful too. In a different way, though. So if you haven't heard his solo albums yet, don't sleep on them.

some nice heavy psych/noise. not sure whether the thinness of the tape recording bothers me here or if it is contributing, I feel like this would be so incredibly sick with a bit of sound engineering to give it a little more clarity and punch. the tape sound does have its own magic though

I'll add some more in a bit, but first, here's a newish band out of Hokkaido that I'm really impressed by. They're a bit out there...kinda garage/psyc/prog/noise badassery. Been in my mix the last couple weeks. Apparently they played Fuji Rock just recently.

Yeah, Ling Tosite Sigure is incredibly unique. I have not found anyone who sounds like them.
The only somewhat ling tosite sigure sounding band is number girl, specifically with this song.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJc8jrcA2aY
Sokoninaru came close, but they devolved into prog-jrock anime intro slop.
There's also a band called Amusement Lager, I'm pretty sure their guitarist uses the same guitar as TK (same pickup at least). He's a bit different from TK, but comes close.
TK's first solo album is great and is the album that inspired me to become a one-man band.
Really, Ling Tosite Sigure as a whole inspired me to go outside of metal in terms of guitar playing.

Yeah, I've not been enjoying their evolution at all. One of those cases where music gets so technical that it eventually turns into robotic mush. Pure ADHD/mania music lol.
If you like their earlier stuff, try HaKU (not the indie band with 4 girls lol). They were pretty good.

When it comes to jazz I think japs are a bit overrated, but when it comes to noise, punk, pop and the likes, they are second to none
>>
>>131263804
This is because they incorporate jazzy elements into those other genres! Maybe the jazz is not so unique on its own, but those other genres yes! See?
>>
>>131263843
For noise/punk not necessarily, but for pop yes indeed, the main appeal of J-pop is not being 2 chords slop for once, stuff like Sheena Ringo's shinjuku-kei stuff would never do well in the US because prog-pop died in the 70s.

>>
>>131260180
>Japanese music because it's painfully derivative of Western music and each other
That is only the case if you exclusively listen to weebslop. Name one band in the west that has similar music to bands like Boris, CoTD, Shinsei Kamattechan.
>>
>>131271510
If you think that sounds remotely unique then you clearly haven't listened enough 90s alt/emo/hardcore
>>
>>131272517
I like Boris but come on, they literally got their name from the Melvins and their more "unique" drone stuff heavily draws from Earth or other post-metal acts from the 90s. They aren't derivative but they aren't "omg Japan is so unique" either.
>>
>>131260867
>>
>>131272537
never said unique, i said "hit the same" all the american stuff ive heard that they were inspired by slash contempories to come off whiny, twangy, folksy, screechy, crunchy even twitchy. it's just not the same feeling, like the american bands lack confidence in a bunch of different ways (emotional, vocal, compositional) it just sounds like a gimmick without the confidence.
>>
>>131272941
addendum to this:
the western bands that feel closest to Tribal Chair to me, that i know of, are not anywhere in the same subgenres like for example Bloc Party where there is a similar confidence of skill and emotional sincerity to hold up something that could very easily collapse into awkward cringe.
>>
>>131272517

>>131272156
From what I've seen he was more of a nerd band, but even as a weeb you think he listened to that exact song from a band with less than a thousand monthly Spotify listeners and 16 RYM followers? It's just a similar riff, and a similar style which isn't that rare. Whether it hits for you or not, objectively in composition and sound it's derivative of a ton of 2000s butt rock and to a lesser extent emo.
>>
>>131273547
>From what I've seen he was more of a nerd band, but even as a weeb you think he listened to that exact song from a band with less than a thousand monthly Spotify listeners and 16 RYM followers?
based on the date and the assumption he watches anime and is into this kinda music too, yeah probably.....
"Vault 101" is from a 2010 release, Tribal Chair's breakout year was late 2008 early 2009 with 2 features in anime promoting songs from their 2009 album, anyone interested in them from hearing them in anime around that time quite easily found their prior 2007 album that "Lost Key" is on.... also curiously one of those breakout anime featured songs and the lead single of the album from 2009 is titled "909"........but sure it could be a coincidence i guess.

Shonen Knife [Gasatanka/Giant, 1990]
The problem with the Japanese is that they don't know the difference between a Ramones song and a Wrigley commercial. But we do, or should, and these are Wrigley commercials, in which three lookee-no-touchee geishas do a good job of half implying that the supercatchy "Banana Fish" is a J.D. Salinger reference--in other words, that they condescend to American culture as much as American counterculture condescends to them. Unfortunately, the only thing that might make this ambiguity interesting would be musical dimensions they have no time, use, or aptitude for. C+
