Great album OP. I've been enjoying jap psych/avant folk lately. Pic related is very good as well as their album Yahho no Potori. Also enjoyed this ten minute Chie Mukai and Justin Simon EP, 日 月 (Hi Suki). Also big big fan of L, both his album Holy Letters and his song "The First Flower People".

I want to share a sneak peak on an "Acid / Prog / Neo Medieval folk" chart I've been working on for a while. It's part of my quest to create a better chart to map the different sub-genres and trajectory of contemporary folk-music that came with the so-called "New Weird America" and "freak folk" movements of the early 2000s. The project is not "done" yet, so this list might be viewed as incomplete by some people.

>>131261903
You gotta listen to this album, because that's what I believed until I heard this. It's more accessible and isn't "good" by virtue of being impenetrable that seems to turn-on the usual drone-crowd.

Btw psych folk is a mix of traditional folk and psychedelic influences, often covering old traditional songs. it's kind of an umbrella term because folk and psychedelia are already both very broad on their own. A lot of early psych folk was rock influenced or at least influenced by the rock and roll and drug culture of the 60's-70's and this gets called acid folk. freak folk incorporates more avant garde and experimental elements and free folk incorporates free improvisation while also generally being pretty experimental. NSB combines influence of those older acid folk bands (traditional songs, lyric and melody forward, raw/lo-fi recording) with free improvisation/experimental/drone music and even post-rock (particularly on their earlier albums).

The Pentangle, Third Ear Band and Älgarnas Trädgård are three great bands that deserve more recognition.
>>
>>131280932
I fee like Pentangle is about as big as they come alongside Steeleye, Imcredible String Band, and Fairport. Pentangle is probably the one I'm least into out of all these. Got any Pentangle recs to change my mind?
>>
>>131281295
I'd say their first three albums are required listening, Sweet Light is my favorite.

Yes, that anon was me. The project has come way further for me since the earliest versions of the charts, like the one you posted.

Give that Peter Walker album a listen, it’s one of my favorite albums. I feel like I’m going on a Peyote vision quest through the Southwest desert whenever I listen to it (even though I mostly listen to it on planes nowadays, it seems like).

Wow, it's good to see you anon! It's a strangely small internet sometimes. I am glad you are still out there folking! :) I will have to continue returning here to make sure I snag the epic chart when it's finished. I did listen to a few songs from Peter Walker the other day, the guitar playing reminded me of Robbie Basho / sounded similarly raga influenced. Like with Basho that rambling playing really carries you along, your description is very fitting!
I'll share this one it's been one of my favorite finds of the past few years, certainly more western. Maybe there's room for it somewhere on yer chart :)

There's some things I still have to listen to. Heron is a big one that I've missed. I can't get into Mellow Candle, though... it reminds me of all the Joanna Newsom wannabees that came out with their ukeleles in the 2000s/2010s on college campuses. Besides Grey Malkin, never gave hauntlogy much of a listen either.

>>131270655
>>131268302
Starsailor isn't really acid folk... Lorca is the closest to this genre, I'd say.

>>131265924
This used to be my favorite Fahey album because I heard that his use of tape effects on Knott's Berry Farm Molly is viewed by people as foundational to psych folk (hence it's inclusion in "The Roots" section of this chart >>131263718). Nowadays, I think I like America more. If you've never seen the cover and art-book included with the the America vinyl, do yourself a favor and find images online because it gives you a look into the archaic mind of this man.

I recently heard this album recorded by Fahey and producer Ayal Senior (who also makes his own music on Bandcamp, but I just wouldn't call it essential listening, unfortunately... really, from what I read, Senior belonged to the 90s noise scene, at the time of recording that album, so disconnected from the subject of this thread, anyways.).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpRkUPluTvA&list=PLfwtVUtlp9dYZLthOr4BOPM3oCTPVyL2n

There's a long improvisational session that the two of them do and then other songs where Fahey reads excerpts from his book. It's deeply psychedelic stream-of-consciousness stuff... absolutely within the scope of this thread. It reminds me of the spoken word nonsense songs from the album where Fahey collaborated with Cul de Sac (https://culdesac.bandcamp.com/album/the-epiphany-of-glenn-jones).

Unfortunately, no. The album mostly keeps the same energy as First Utterance, but just doesn't have the same level of musicality. But if you're a completionist, then it's fine to listen to once.

On the subject of revival albums, I was so impressed by Caedmon's second revival album (https://caedmonsreturn.bandcamp.com/album/rare). They still got it from the time of their first album (unlike Comus).

>>131287320
On this subject, I was only able to hear the album in the post above because it was uploaded on Youtube by a channel associated with someone named Will Csorba... it turns out, he is an excellent American primitive guitarist, as well.

Listen to his albums and give him money (disclaimer: I am NOT Will Csorba)

Didn't know NSB did simple folksong covers at all. Cool.

>>131283995
I guess it's fine to call Peter Walker "psychedelic" because he was literally a musician for Timothy Leary. And I agree with Basho's music moving you along and taking you places, but it almost feels offensive to call it "psychedelic" because I feel like he was tapping into something so much deeper.

There is always room on the chart, friendo.

they do talk about Animal Collective among many many other 'revival' artists like Espers and Joanna Newsom and Six Organs of Admittance, in this excellent book. They're even mentioned on the cover of the book among many others

and of course the book also includes the 60s/70s old weird america scene and old weird britain/uk ireland etc

such as:
>Incredible String Band
>Pentangle
>Pearls Before Swine
>Alexander 'Skip' Spence
>Fairport Convention
>Nick Drake
>Dr. Strangely Strange
>Comus
>Vashti Bunyan
>Linda Perhacs
>Tim Buckley

highly recommended for any fans of acid/psych/freak.
