Live at the Salem Witch Trials
For me it's Grotesque and NWRA is their best song
Hex of course! I enjoy the other albums, but none of them hit me quite the same as Hex.
>>131263894Dragnet. Luv ''your heart out'' and ''before the moon falls'' like you wouldn't believe. If we count compilations then their collected Peel Sessions are top tier too.
>>131264503>HexSameBut I'm listening to Room to Live quite a lot these days, it's basically Hex part 2
Kurious Kur-ious Kurious Oranj
>>131265061Kurious to know what you like about it so much
I like that song where he sings>I GET KNOCKED DOWN>BUT I GET UP AGAIN>ARE THEY EVER GONNA BRING ME DOWN?
All their records are great, even the ones placed in the last positions of its discography are a 4/5 by anyone's else standards.https://youtu.be/q3becwjJCh8Extricate, Code: Selfish, Infotainment Scan, Unnuterable, Marshall Suite, Country On The Click, Fall Heads Roll, Imperial Wax Solvent or Your Future Our Clutter are excellent records and as great as their 70s or 80s "classic" works and at the same time are DIFFERENT from them. I mean, if you want Dragnet pt 2 or This Nations Saving Grace pt 2 you have countless of post punks repeating ad nauseam with dubious quality that sound. So after the 80's with The Fall there's a CHANGE of sound (eg, the 90's incorporating rhythm oriented electronic music or the 10's with the development or squeaks gutural voices) but not in the quality (Fall is one of the few acts that are adventurous and careful at the same time of the melody), which rely on Mes prosody and unique voice.Want to know your thoughts about 90's, 00's and 10's Fall?
Grotesque (After the Gramme)
The Fall had great songs, OK songs and shit songs throughout their career, often on the same album, just by nature of their productivity and changing members. Don’t be one of those fans who insist everything is great.
>>131266744I agree. Most Brix songs, for example
>>131266744No need to be a fan to acknowledge ell the output is great. No need to be biased to recognize it
>>131266744>shit songs throughout their careerWhat are the shit songs from their golden era (1978-1986)?
>>131263894Country on the Click/The Real New Fall LP
bump
>>131266630My issue with some of the later Fall records is Mark's lyrics getting even more unintelligible, especially when he's not being that energetic on the song. I know it's become a bit of a meme that it's all just nonsense but I like paying attention to what bullshit spews out of his speedball head on top of the tight music.I will say that Midnight in Aspen is one overlooked atypical Fall song, it's pretty touching. And gotta give props to the Von Sudenfeld album with the Mouse on Keys lads, it's super neat.
>>131271482>Mark's lyrics getting even more unintelligiblewell, that's related with this approach at the mic he developed in the last years, adding growls, gutural sounds, squeaks and the like. i like it cause it adds a new dimension to the vocals but not everybody like it. https://youtu.be/QFBBNomUnuE
>>131264534>DragnetBased and same.
what if mark actually let kurt cobain briefly join the band for a laugh in 93?
>>131272803Kurt wasn’t a booger eater, so he wouldn’t have done it.
>>131272812-The Fall was playing at the Roxy on 7th September 1993. Kurt Cobain & Courtney Love went to see them. After that gig... "Nirvana were such big fans that Kurt Cobain climbed on their tour bus and begged to come with them. Smith [traveling by airplane by then] refused to let him along for the ride, just as he rejected the admiration of other key players on the US indie underground."--Excavate! The Wonderful and Frightening World of The Fall.--https://www.livenirvana.com/history/calendar93.php-Nirvana's tried to get on the bus in the States...ah....can you believe that? Fuckin' Kurt Cobain and his girlfriend that fucking Courtney Pine...trying to hitch a ride. We fuckin' just threw 'em off. Wouldn't put up with it..." Mark E Smith--Renegade: The Lives and Tales of Mark E. Smith.
>>131266485It's a bit more zestier and upbeat than their other stuff
>>131272812they were all shit eating heroin junkies so they would've fit right in
>>131273328>just as he rejected the admiration of other key players on the US indie underground.Mark was just too based for this world.
>>131271482the Von Sudenfed side project was the best thing he did in his final decade
>>131275272Imperial Wax Solvent and YFOC are great too
>>131273328Man I miss Mark so much
>>131273407Mark was a speed freak and a boozer, not a junkie
>>131279729
MES aged really rapidly around 1992-1993. I wonder if its because he was drinking more cuz of the Brix divorce. Sad. What a great man. I really look up to him.
>>131286053look at how he looks on the Light User Syndrome album cover VS I am Kurious Oranj. Eyes totally wiped of light. He had a difficult life in certain ways Im sure. Brilliant man
>>131263894My fav Fall album is Bend Sinister. Auto Tech Pilot, Mr Pharmacist, Shoulder Pads, Bournemouth Runner all GOATed tracks. But I define them more by eras than by albums and I really believe the 1986-1988 era is PEAK Fall. MES really challenged himself creatively here writing his play Hey! Luciani and also challenging himself with the I Am Kurious Oranj ballet. To me, this is the era where the "sound" of The Fall truly transcends the genre compartmentalizations of "punk" (hex Enduction Hour et al.) and "post-punk" (wonderful and firghting world of) and become its own, UTTERLY UNIQUE soundI see so much negative sentiment around the man but I really believe MES was one of the greatest artists of all time and just a brilliant, BRILLIANT man with such incredible talent and work ethic. And to me, 1986-1988 is the epitome of his best qualities, THE SHEER VOLUME OF OUTPUT HE MANAGED IN THAT ERA IS INSANE!!! And to think he was juggling it all with personal relationship issues and probably addiction etc While I dont include Extricate 1990 in the same era as the aforementioned works I do think it is also a BRILLIANT post-partum reflection on "the peak" of The Fall, so many great tracks from Extricate whose lyrics and tone are obviously referencing struggles MES experienced during the Hey! Luciani/Kurious Oranj/Bend Sinister era (most obviously, the breakdown of his marriage in track like Sing Harpy!" What else can be said except that he was a brilliant man and a true ARTIST
>>131265061Bad News Girl possibly my fav fall track, what an incredible progression. and just the foundations it was produced on is so interesting and I appreciate the group so much for challenging themselves artistically like that
>>13128605398 was when he really fell off the wagon. Fighting with his band, getting arrested in New York, sacking Hanley and Scanlon.
>>131286687absolutely. what a low point. Losing Hanley especially. What a dedicated, utter trooper Hanley. Thas undeinably the point where MES was the problem and not the band. But I still love MES nonetheless its just a tragedy really.
>>131286687>>131286745The Fall kept releasing great records after 98
>>131264553>it's basically Hex part 2It sounds different
>>131286101Based Fallamaniac.I will say that Peel versions of those Bend Sinister are absolutely top tier, especially Hot Aftershave Bop. But I still haven't warmed up to the rest of their output during the late 80s. I'll listen to it again in the next few days to see what I get out of it this time.
booger eating samefag thread
131292707There were always people discussing about The Fall since the IP counter mu era, newfag
>>131286745Read Hanley's book. He comes off as a bit of a whinging star-eyed bandfag. It's that Catholic stoicism that pulls him through. Mark was more real. Drunk loony with too many cats.
Always been a Bend Sinister kind of guy
>>131295797elaborate why?
