BLUE MOON OF KENTUCKY, KEEP ON SHININ'SHINE ON THE ONE THAT'S GONE AND PROVED UNTRUEBLUE MOON OF KENTUCKY, KEEP ON SHININ'SHINE ON THE ONE THAT'S GONE AND LEFT ME BLUE
>>131286757Monroe's most well-known recording, cut in Chicago 9/16/46. It sounds like shit though because he insisted on recording live to a single mic, a practice he'd continue until stereo LPs arrived, and the fact that red label Columbia 78s did have notably bad sound quality. The record was released the following January and went on to be one of the biggest selling discs of 1947. He recorded two later remakes of the song in the 50s-60s, one of which tried to copy Elvis's more rocking cover version.
Monroe complained about Elvis's version until he got a check in the mail.
>>131287529lol
>>131287529RCA never received the original master tape of BMOK from Sun, so they instead used a rip from a 78 disc. They also compressed it further and it sounded even worse.
>>131286911the thing is, white gospel groups and croonerslop were both big parts of Elvis's sound, but rock critics have tried to downplay or ignore those influences as they didn't consider them "cool" compared to his R&B influences. it's similar to the Beatles where they try to disregard the influence skiffle and music hall had on them and make it look like they were entirely doing a Chuck Berry tribute act.
>>131286911>he insisted on recording live to a single micSOVL
>>131292542Monroe always did live shows that way and he insisted on same in the studio. Those red label Columbia 78s sound horrible because they were laminated cork rather than shellac due to increased shellac prices resulting from WW2.
>>131292500It's funnier still because most Beach Boys fans have no problem admitting their sound was mostly stolen from the Four Freshmen.
>>131292805A lot of people find TFF hard to listen to because they sound so fucking corny.
>>131292500Elvis was open about his love of Dean Martin. He was also definitely influenced by Bing Crosby and Perry Como, though he never said it outright (his Como imitation became more obvious in his later years)
>>131287529In public at least he didn't (he got a nice royalty check so why would he be upset?) and he was spurred to remake the song with an updated rock-and-roll sound
>>131287529B-side to "That's All Right." Sam Phillips was surprised that Elvis knew Crudup's recording because he would have only been 12 when it came out.
>>131293337why though? by 12 most people are consciously able to follow music. it's more a question of where and when he heard TAM because his parents didn't have a record player so he must have heard it on the radio or perhaps from seeing Crudup live.
>>131293152The remake on Mercury was still recognizably bluegrass but Monroe sped up the tempo vis a vis the original '47 version.
>>131293480he also changed it to 4/4 time
