Christ the amount of human effort wasted to sound like an SNL band warm up.

CBAT has some all time bangers (Do It Again, Reelin in the Years, Midnite Cruiser) but also some stinkers. Aja is solid all the way through with the possible exception of I Got The News and is more harmonically dense.
If I had to pick only one of the two, Deacon Blues, Black Cow, Aja, Peg, and Josie make it a simple decision.

i always get the feeling that steely dan are a lot more enjoyable when you dont have many real problems in life.
>>
I never understood that strain of hipster that Albini was that has a frothing hatred of anything remotely progressive

I legitimately think that liking or not liking Steely Dan comes down to a threshold IQ. If you're below the threshold you will never appreciate what they're doing
>>
>>131310736
thanks for coming back from the dead Steve to post on a dying board
>>

Albino I think was driven by insecurity in his hatred of Steely Dan
nothing he ever did as an artist and very little he did as a producer ever had or ever will have the kind of enduring love and appreciation that SD's pre-hiatus catalogue has. And those projects he was involved in that may stand the test of time will do so in spite of him, not because of him.
I mean, fuck's sake, Royal Scam is 50 years old and still slaps. If Albini had been capable of writing even one song on the level of Kid Charlemagne he would have. He couldn't, and as a self-styled smartest man in the room, that fact agonized him.

Trannies. Steely Dan defenders lol
>>
>>131314192
Steely Dan does not require defenders. The music speaks for itself. They wrote stinkers no question, but the large majority of their pre-hiatus output is objectively good and if you do not at minimum appreciate the craft on display you have objectively bad taste and a poor understanding of music.
why you brought troons into this, I'll never know. Probably you're just an NPC who gets their opinions from people marginally more intelligent than yourself.

>>131314507
I honestly believe that if you listen to Black Cow, Aja, Deacon Blues, and Peg, and you don't like a single one of them on first listen, the Dan will never be your bag
>>
>>131313032
>I'm feeling suffocated by the button-down life lately
You see faggot, that is not really a big problem
>>
>>131314660
Hating every second of the existence you spent years building and working toward is absolutely a big problem. Resenting your spouse for slowly turning into an emotionally immature bundle of neuroses, leaving you to be a psychological caretaker to both an infant and an adult is absolutely a big problem. Being stuck in a career path that you are good at while fundamentally despising as the rest of the job market turns to shit around you and leaves you stranded is absolutely a big problem.
Are you a teenager or just a complete fucking retard? Either way, you don't have the first clue what a big problem is. You're probably still stuck in the phase where all your "big problems" are direct results of shortsided hedonism and substance abuse.
>>
>>131314724
Sir this is a Wendy's
>>
>>131314632
I disagree simply on the grounds that this was not my experience at all. Aja by Steely Dan was extremely disjunctive on first listen. I had been into all types of complex music at this point in my life but for some reason Steely Dan of all things was kicking my ass. It was almost too dense to handle as far as pop music goes. Something about those chord progressions really rubbed me the wrong way. But because it was just so iconic and pervasive in culture I kept returning to it. One day it all clicked at once and I listened to both Peg and Josie probably over 200 times. Donald Fagen made me his slave. I am eternally loyal to him.
>>
>>131314792
You're an edge case. Aja is the most out there of the 4 I listed but if someone doesn't find something to like in any of the other 3 on first listen it's just not their bag and never will be.
>>
>>131312970
lol the only guy i know who loves this band is a 30 year old NEET living with his parents, you might be onto something
>>
>>131312106
You can't hate on Can't Buy A Thrill like that
>>
>>131314829
NEETs are the most aristocratic men of our time therefore Steely Dan is aristocratic music.
>>
>>131314760
I accept your concession.
>>
>>131314832
I'm not hating, it's a solid album. It has some of their best tracks. It's just not their best as a total package. It certainly isnt better than any of the last 3 classic period albums.
Royal Scam has zero weak tracks, Aja and Gaucho have one each. CBAT has 3 easy.
>>
>>131314829
Being a 30 year old NEET living with your parents is a huge fucking problem, what in the goddamn fuck are you talking about?
I believe I'd kill myself if I found myself in that pathetic situation, holy god.

Steely Dan is monumental, way more importance should be assigned to It instead of assigning it to boybands turned psych like The Beatles.
>>
>>131314948
yeah obviously, but the thing is he doesn't perceive it as problematic. so he's still living almost like a kid, everything (money, cooking, cleaning etc.) is taken care of by his parents, i'd say that's the closest to "living without problems" for an autist as you can get.

I never found Steely Dan inaccessible because Becker and Fagen were fundamentally pop songwriters, despite their posturing. So many tracks have massive hooks and anthemic choruses.

lol it's literally divorced dad music

I do not enjoy Dan Palmer's vocals.

Old /mu/ hated boring dad rock like this. You would get made fun of if you said you liked this album on old /mu/.
>>
>>131317989
old /mu/ acted like boring indie shit ITAOTS was the height of the art form so frankly I don't care what they would have done.
>>
>>131317968
whoops, I meant David Palmer
I don't even like the guy enough to get his name right apparently
>>
>>131318252

Fagen is a perfect example of a “worse” singer being “better” because his idiosyncrasies suit the music
>>
>>131318458
precisely
>>
it's still crazy to me that this is considered a dad band cause everybody irl i've met who's been really into the dan has been an 18-35 female
>>
>>131319183
Like the other guy said, Steely Dan is progressive but still pop enough to be accessible for normies. Which isn't a bad thing, actually it's the best type of songwriting, but it seems most Steely Dan fans have a superiority complex. Basically redditor midwits who think they're le smart.

I mean you don't see Supertramp fans circlejerking like they do.
>>
>>131319237
i wish you did
supertramp deserve it
>>
>>131314911
I conceded nothing. Go watch American Beauty. That's where you are at in life and it's honestly pathetic.
>>
>>131312970
learn an instrument and they become much more enjoyable because you appreciate the level of craft in every aspect of every single fucking song
>>
>>131319183
Bitches do be lovin' some Steely Dan
>>
>>131319424
the fact that you have to appeal to a work of fiction to characterize the situation betrays your total lack of real-world experience with building and maintaining a respectable family life and a solid career, basically admitting NEETdom, which makes your unprompted seething obvious for the jealousy it is
I may not love every aspect of my life right now but I would absolutely be swallowing a gun barrel if I found myself in yours
>>
I made myself understand Steely Dan. Last winter a friend made me see a coverband of them and it was boring but now I feel the comfort of their music. Nothing revolutionary, just music for the background
>>
>>131319772
that's a lot of words to say "I am a midwit"
>>
steely dan fanbase used to be cool and chill before weebs ruined it all
>>
>>131319679
>I may not love every aspect of my life right now but I would absolutely be swallowing a gun barrel if I found myself in yours
I feel the same about your hollow mockery of a life.
>>
>>131314948
>Being a 30 year old NEET living with your parents is a huge fucking problem, what in the goddamn fuck are you talking about?
they all learn soon enough.
it takes some longer than others but there IS be a day in every NEET's life where they wake up and realize they're no longer young, they've done absolutely nothing with their lives, and they have nothing to show for it. it's an overly bearing, crushing, nauseating, panic-inducing feeling that can only be cultivated by leading the life of sloth and waste that only the NEET knows.
>>
>>131319802
what do weebs have to do with steely dan?
>>
>>131319817
Yeah I'm sure it's much more fulfilling living with your parents in your 30s with no prospect of ever having a stable relationship, never mind a family, all the while soothing your existential pain with video games, anime porn, and shitposting on 4chan as your body atrophies into an amorphous blob of flab and chronic health conditions.

hit Post too fast
the worst part about it all? they can't fix it. they can't go back to school; they have no money and/or are too old. they can't start a family; no woman wants a balding middle-aged virgin with nothing to contribute to a relationship. it's a hellish mental anguish that they 100% deserve. you don't see too much talk about it though in NEET circles, mostly because those that do reach that day have already put a moon roof in their skull kek.

I feel sad for you, that you lack the cognitive capacity to see SD's music as anything beyond your description. Not only because you'll never get the joy I do from experiencing some of the most interesting and harmonically dense pop music of its day, but mainly because modern life must be very difficult for someone of your diminished intellect.
Actually I guess things are about to get easier for you as the AI industry continues to ramp up. you're the perfect man for the moment
