One thing that's that always been funny to me is that the music everyone associates with the 80's was pretty much created in the late 70's and dead by 84'. Most of those early MTV acts fell off or had to shift their sound. Synth pop was dead after 84'.

No it wasn't, it died until 1989 when the old synthpop bands shifted to House, EBM, Techno or edgier Industrial sound.
