This definitely seems like the story that would be done in a sitcom where the child characters were in high school.

There’s a slight possibility that another intended meaning here for Matt Groening, who was a big advocate of punk, alternative, and indie rock music, would be that any fogey of any time period would say rock reached its zenith before punk rock developed (earliest hints in 1975) and tore down the last of the ‘60s generation.
