More specifically 1985-1991 Everything was just watered out, commericalized variants of music that had seemed promising a few years earlier. There was a lot of great underground music but it was entirely overshadowed by all annoyingly loud, bold and obnoxious industry puppets devoid of any inspiring quality. Even the late 2010s with the mumble rap wave was better. Nirvana saved it eventually by bringing underground music to the surface thank god

no. the WORST era for music was the late 90s to early 10s. music was dogshit back then with NO alternatives to escape itsure mainstream music might worse now, but it doesn't really matter because people have the internet now and listen to whatever they want and we even got some cool genres like synthwave and phonk
any era where rock and roll is downgraded and the urban genres like R&B are the main genres they push on us is the worst era.

I dont know what was up with the recording techniques of the late 80s but so many albums have this thin, tinny sound to them that really grinds my gears. Especially when it comes to a lot of college rock/jangle pop, where the shimmering guitars are way too piercing and the drums sound like somebody's crumbling pieces of paper in the background. And the big acts, on the flipside, went with the massive drum sound that's now commonly associated with stadium rock.The synths of that era also weren't too great. There was a sweet spot in the mid 80s where they were refined to the point of aural candy. Like the synth lines on Madonna's Lucky Star or Borderline, they're like crack. But then the early onslaught of club music from england switched things around and we started to get the horribly tacky sound you'd find on, say, late 80s Public Image Ltd. and Madchester in general.I think non-hip hop black music and metal were the groups that handled that time the best. Chuckiie Booker's a cool new jack swing soul kind of guy, check him out if you like that stuff. And obviously there were some outliers: Siouxsie & the Banshees' Tinderbox still sounds as crystal clear as any great album from today. Or Skylark.All in all it was very dated sound that was actively harming the music in a way that wasn't very charming. Shit sounded cheapo. But i guess it just took a while for the layperson to get a grip on the new tech. I'm glad the early digital CD Rom era arrived a little later, with it came a qualitative leap. And a 'timeless' sound settled itself past 91. The Posies' Frosting on the Beater has a template that was as applicable in the 90s as it would have been in the 70s or be now in current year. Things got settled in.
