IV is literally a perfect album and it deserves all the praise it gets. It's one of the few cases where the normalfag opinion is completely correct. There's not a single album less than great in all of the first six albums they put out though.

Physical Graffiti [Swan Song, 1975]I suppose a group whose specialty is excess should be proud to emerge from a double-LP in one piece. But except on side two--comprising three-only-three Zep classics: "Houses of the Holy," "Trampled Under Foot," and the exotic "Kashmir"--they do disperse quite a bit, not into filler and throwaway ("Boogie with Stu" and "Black Country Woman" on side four are fab prefabs) but into wide tracks, misconceived opi, and so forth. Jimmy Page cuts it throughout, but after a while Robert Plant begins to grate--and I like him. B+

>Led Zeppelin – Physical Graffiti (B+)>This bloated monster of an album is Led Zeppelin’s equivalent of The Beatles: an impressive, sprawling Zep-o-pedia showing the band as consummate professionals who can do everything but are just past their peak as helmsmen for their generation. Unfortunately, the Beatles past 1967 could still continue to be consistently fun as melody writers and endearing as personalities; I couldn’t say the same for Physical Graffiti, bogged down with old inferior outtakes, lengthy jams that go on way longer than they should, and a whole lot of clumsy, dense cock-rock like ‘Custard Pie’ and ‘The Wanton Song’ which just doesn’t have the old-timey bluesy lightness of ‘Whole Lotta Love’ or ‘Black Dog’ (and if you want fresh mid-Seventies cock-rock, you’re much better off with Aerosmith and AC/DC anyway). There’s still a lot to enjoy – they’ve learned how to be funky (‘Trampled Underfoot’) and starry-Oriental-eyed progressive (‘Kashmir’), and I’ve grown attached to the psychedelic slog of ‘In The Light’ and everything. But honestly, this is one double LP that should never have been stretched out to such an unwarranted length.
