Do genetics determine your musical ability? Maybe you have to be born with it
>>131390153Yes, although 'music' is a multi-factor expression/product and not a single result of a single genetic expression. You could have genes for great vocals, but not the brain for melodic composition. You could be a compositional genius, but with shit coordination (ie, no playing your own instruments) and a shit voice. You could have extremely high proprioceptive acuity (ie, the position of the body within space and time), which might make you a great player of instruments, but you might also have a shitty voice and very little melodic sense (writing your own songs ends up making people bored or mad). Etc.
>>131390153Genetics determine literally everything
>>131390175This is why I suffer
>>131390153>>131390169All good points, however. There's a lot of musicians everyone ITT listens to who, if random chances in their lives had been slightly different, would probably have not made it in music and may well have given it up or done it as a side hobby. A lot of good songwriters for example still needed some other members around them to bring out their best work or make their songs come to life. They'd never be that great if they'd had to go it alone. People usually call that 'chemistry' between artists. You might have one guy with little instrumental ability, a shit voice and little melodic sense but if he still wants to be a musician then with enough drive he can still make something happen (might need other people around him too). You can get a long way with persistence above all else.A lot of it comes down to doing the hard work of trying to make things sound good. Some people have an easier time with this than others. A lot of musicians out there have potentially very good ideas that end up half baked. Every song you like could have become a half baked crappy song if certain tweaks along the way weren't made.
>>131390153yes, its a big factor. for example, look at all the shitty music those berklee kids churn out. if music was solely down to technical and theoretical ability, all those guys who attended music school should produce amazing music. but they didnt and couldnt. on the other hand, you have self taught guys like the beatles and kurt cobain who have way less knowledge and technical ability than those music nerds create music that will stand the test of time.
>>131390153Yes but it's also simple luckI have written a catalog of songs that I genuinely believe would be the best rock album(s) of the 21st century if only I wasn't a poorfag who couldn't afford any actual instruments or recording equipment
>>131390175Including cock size
"Influences" is a better term than "determines".
Potentially but the ability you need for popular music is not high and open to everyone. The biggest change I've seen (being old) is from how good you get learning stuff off records to Yootoob zoomers. Good for them. When I started I literally had a library book and a neighbour that knew how to tune the guitar. I had to keep taking it round.
>>131390169this is true. OP look at early partnerships, there was usually one person writing the lyrics and the other person writing the composition. just because you're good at writing melodies or compositions doesn't mean you can write lyrics to fit that melody.I think you can see that John Lennon was a way more talented lyricist than say George Harrison when you see his reaction to George's demo of "Something" George keeps insisting on Pomegranate to be the filler, but it doesn't flow well, Lennon who didn't even write the melody understands that Cauliflower flows better. Of course, the final lyrics fit Cauliflower "attract me like no other lover"Tchaikovsky is a compositional genius. But he had the weakest thinest girliest voice, so he couldn't sing himself.
>>131390987>bro NO ONE from music schools make good music>btw here's these cherrypicked successes that didn't go to music school that i'm going to post to satisfy my confirmation biaslow IQ thought pattern. VERY common on this site
>>131390987The losers that went to music school and studied music theory and opera are literally just trust fund brainlets with no talent and if they try to sing anything other than opera you realize that they don't have pleasant voices for anything popular.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QA8-ZOuKetUThis gets posted on 4chan a lot. Just some black retard singing off key and clapping off key. But it sounds good. There is also this autistic guyhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txc37oPNMLAit's clear he was never taught how to play piano, it's clear he has vision problems as well, but he's just got a better sense of the music than most peopleit brings me great joy singing someone like playboy carti dunk on those trust fund kids
>>131391424rap is what dominates the airwaves. do you think these people have any knowledge of musical theory? they're no different from those blind blues musicians on the streetpeople don't like being told genetics determines everything. look at all those faggots trying to do exercises to deepen their voice. it's something you're born with.A lot of people I've noticed are not only tone deaf, they don't understand the underlying rhythm of a song, so they sing with no soul
Is it ok if you shave your ass while theres poo stuck to your ass?
>>131391524no
>>131391524if you're using an electric thing it's gonna send poop particles flying everywhere don't do that
>>131391501>seething about rap out of nowherebig shocker that you're an incel. so "muh genetics" is the new big cope y'all are turning to? guess you really have run out of arguments. wonder what you think about eminem and vanilla ice. actually, i don't care.
>>131390153I'm getting old and I can't play Suffocation - Pierced From Within anymore. It's not really a big deal or anything, but it still makes me sad...
>>131391524Yeah it will get the poo off too
>The best thing that I did, or had actually, was a really good sense of what sounded good and what sounded bad in my own playing. And if I tried to copy Eddie Van Halen's fast stuff, it didn't sound good. And even now, there are still so many things that I can't play fast. So I think my biggest skill is knowing that if I can't do it, then I shouldn't do it. Don't play stuff that sounds bad!https://guitar.com/features/paul-gilbert-interview-behold-electric-guitar/The biggest mistake you can make is pissing and moaning about it instead of using it to your advantage
>>131390153No. Genetics determine your potential. Work and dedication determine your ability.
>>131392685Yeah to be great you gotta have both, to be good one of them is usually enough
>>131392782Correct. I personally think that work and dedication get you to the 90% level, but you need to be born with the last 10%.
>>131390175ironic that i was listening to alan rickman's greatest musical performance when i read your post.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDp-xpN7Xqg
>>131392685work and dedication are genetic
>>131391424I said it was a big factor which is true. Look at Bach or Beethoven, just imagine how many of their peers are forgotten to time. Now if the beatles or kurt were properly trained, imagine how much better their music could have been. I am not saying learning properly is a waste of time, only that you either have IT or you dont and no amount of training can get you IT.

>>131390153I suspect musicality is something you're born with moreso than most talents.
>>131397281>I suspect musicality is something you're born with moreso than most talents.Having taste is definitely a more inane talent than a learned one. Doesn't just apply to music though, can apply to most creative fields.
>>131390153only in the sense that the younger you are exposed to music, the greater you will become. having parents that are already musicians is the quickest path to being a great musician. music ability is entirely how hard you work at it (including how often you push yourself outside your comfort zone by jamming and gigging), and how much music you truly expose yourself to. barring anything short of birth defects or amputations, size of hands height etc have almost no bearing on your musical potential as you will find ways to adapt and play new things because of limitations. I had no music exposure as a child and picked up bass at 30 years old, was gigging, writing songs, jamming, and learning songs completely by ear within 5 years. I wont say I mastered the genre, but I have absolutely no problem completely improvising over a funk or jazz track in one take; rhythm and groove can be learned also. I am 8 months into learning guitar now and am doing the same thing.

>>131402091?
>>131390987Being good at making music can't really be taught, the technical side can be taught but having the ability to make a good melody is something else. It's the same reason that one hit wonders exist. People who made one great song and never managed to do it again, you can understand how the song is played inside out but actually making another one just as good isn't easy. If it was they'd all churn out constant hits but they never do.
