Disco has kind of a similar trajectory. A lot of modern people, particularly musicians, actually like and are influenced by the best parts of disco, but people tend to forget the garbage stuff and how over-played it was in pop culture.

People who are around 45 right now are the ones for whom nu metal was a phase they grew out of in the 2000s. For Millennials, it was something they grew into while Xers were growing out of it. The hipster image was carried by Xers, and that's far worse than the cringiest nu metal.
