Disco has kind of a similar trajectory. A lot of modern people, particularly musicians, actually like and are influenced by the best parts of disco, but people tend to forget the garbage stuff and how over-played it was in pop culture.

People who are around 45 right now are the ones for whom nu metal was a phase they grew out of in the 2000s. For Millennials, it was something they grew into while Xers were growing out of it.
