Dylan's best material was made in the '80s

I like the album okay, but every single song is about three times longer than it needs to be. You have these anthemic vocal sections that help a casual listener patch over in their minds the endless amounts of rambling, repetitive riffs and uninspired rhythm sections on most of the tracks. "Sanitarium" is also very obviously ground zero for the kind of overly weepy stadium rock that would come to dominate pop metal radio. I'd argue that had more to do with "November Rain" being written than anything that came out on the Black Album, which merely correlated with it in time and made the trend much more obvious. And again, Sanitarium is a three-minute song that goes on for seven.

I think the main damage from Master of Puppets comes from the fact that Kill Em All and especially Ride the Lightning are as great and influential as they are. The commercial and artistic masters of mid-'80s proto-extreme metal basically gave this manifesto of the Shape of Metal to Come, and the best stuff to come from the genre since then has been reacting *against* the tendencies of the band, while plenty of fucking dogshit has followed in its footsteps.

These are instincts that I had when first listening to it, but take the word of someone who was there:

I have three, all about the same band:

Bal Sagoth's first album is their weakest by far, except the demo, which is utter trash. Their second, Starfire Burning, kicked off a journey of incredible music, and the campier they got, the better their music was.

Byron A. Roberts is a genius, and his written works are only slightly less good than the metal-opera lyric sheets of the albums they put out.

There ARE good clone bands. Wizardthrone only has one album out, and it's packed with quality stuff start to finish. Everything that's good about Gloryhammer they got from Bal-Sagoth and Rhapsody. Kull's only album is also pretty good, but it suffers deeply from not having Byron at the helm.
>>
>Rush has some amazing songs and albums, but they kept changing their sound (synths, rap) to try to stay relevant, and as a result they don't really have an identity
>Led Zeppelin is the greatest rock band of all time, but their last 2 albums were mid at best, and Bonham's death allowed them end the band while they were still loved and revered, rather than fade away into obscurity. the few reunions they did after Bonham's death further prove that they were past their prime
>Roger Waters is Pink Floyd, and the band should've dissolved when he left, ideally after The Wall
>Queen has like 10 good or great songs, with everything else being forgettable. their albums seem to serve as a vessel to release a single, with the rest of the album being generic filler

Smile failed because Brian Wilson wasn't quite a good enough producer to pull the thing off. If he had a George Martin to work with perhaps he'd succeed with the project. While Presto is my third favorite Rush album, and I quite enjoy Power Windows, there's something to be said about the loss of their fourth man (Terry Brown). Terry knew how
to (at the same time) both expand and refine upon the strengths and weaknesses of Geddy, Alex, and Neil as a trio.

Terry Brown is an unsung hero in many ways - I absolutely adore the work he did with Voivod and Fates Warning - producing what are (arguably) their best albums.

Unpopular Rush opinion: Rush albums produced by Nick Raskulinecz are noisy, unfocused, rambling messes.
>>
>>131400832
every Rush producer brought something different out in them even if a few did allow the band to engage in some self-indulgent playing and songwriting
>>
Rush is another example of what I mean when I said most 70s bands fell off in the 80s. You won't find too many Rush fans who are interested in Signals onward and at their shows the fans IME always wanted to hear the 70s stuff.
>>
>>131400928
is it the band "falling off" or the fact that the majority of the audience only obsessively listens to music when teenagers?
>>
>>131400928
say what? from 82 to 96 their concerts were almost all new material and especially in 82-88. On the 2012-13 tour, the first set was heavily biased toward Power Windows, and the second set was mostly Clockwork Angels material.
>>
>>131400955
All the way up to Presto Rush would almost always play the new album on their tours. I find it hard to believe those fans were going there to hear nothing but 70s stuff when they would be like 2-3 at most songs in the setlist.
>>
>>131400787
Love Like Blood absolutely is a goth song but I wouldn't call them a capital-g Goth band
>>
>>131400955
I'm old and I saw them on the Roll The Bones tour, and they played most of the album live and got an enthusiastic crowd response. This was almost 20 years into their run at that point with grunge taking off and they were still very much a current, working band and not a nostalgia act.
>>
>>131400955
Neil Pert was bragging at their '13 RRHOF induction how they don't just play 35 year old songs like most of their peers and were always looking forward.
>>
>>131401127
i mean, Rush songs are about some kind of libertarian fedora autism bullshit and neither they or their fans ever had sex. that's relatively age-proof and you can get away with it at 40+ whereas a band like Motley Crue that were just about being young horny rock badasses were going to age a lot worse.
>>
Jackson Browne was best when he stuck to pop. His meandering ballad epics are a real drag even though a lot of his fans love them.
>>
Highway 61 Revisited is only an okay album boosted by LARS. John Wesley Harding is decent but not as good as it's made out to be, and it's inferior to New Morning.

Sting's solo run 82-93 was excellent and better than The Police. Also he hasn't made a single listenable album from 95 onward.

whites did the blues way better than blacks. ZZ top/ Stones mogs anything by even Howling Wolf/Muddy Waters. Not sure why. Maybe because they regularized the beat more or something.

Nearly every garage band sucked before they heard Jimi too, just not as loudly. And how exactly did BB ruin blues? All the reasons I can think of might be more properly blamed on T-Bone Walker.

Garage rock is a either-you-get-it-or-you-don't thing. Plus it's very regional and Midwestern bands sound different from Texas or PNW bands. But after Hendrix they started doing a lot more feedback and overly long solos, too bluesy and not in a good Yardbirds way.

As for BB King, just as he said. Too safe, cute, and normie-accessible. Note that blues artists who came after BB all tried to sound like him, not Lightnin' Hopkins or one of those guys.
>>
>>131401459
ok. garage rock is good in limited doses and i generally consider the PNW to have the best bands. i also enjoy a lot of blues, BB included, but do find that many rock groups have played it poorly, in cliched ways and that as a genre it ended up painting itself into a corner.
>>
>>131401409
me, i never found any of the classic bluesmen from Robert Johnson to Hopkins to Son House to Wolf "boring"
>>
>>131401409
also George's version is probably the superior one, tho John Lee Hooker's more modern regularized beat version might give it a run for the money.

I'd really like the 'blacks did blues better' contingent to educate on that because I really do tend to think the really good white blues bands like Stones, Thorogood, ZZ were probably a lot better. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--AvCsh48bk
>>
>>131401513
No I meant specifically the "modern" blues sound with horns, clean tone, obvious chord changes, meta songs about having the blues, and all of that was stuff BB originated.

A Momentary Lapse of Reason and The Division Bell are great albums totally worthy of inclusion in Floyd's canon.

All claims that outside contributors, dated production, etc. drag things down ignore how cheesy and dated some of the early Floyd albums (Ummagumma anyone?) could be and how Roger Waters himself succumbed to '80s production when he released Radio KAOS.

Incidentally, while the plot of KAOS is bonkers, the album includes some of the best songs Waters ever wrote and I find myself wishing he'd have been able to release the full concept by his record label. From memory, it was supposed to be a double album ala The Wall. The plot would still have been goofy, but I think the sheer hubris of scope would have elevated it from the footnote it became.

While we're on the topic, and for one more unpopular opinion, Waters' best decision of the '80s was bringing in Paul Carrack as co-vocalist. He finally came to his senses and realized that he needed a vocal foil like Gilmour to bring some light and shade to his songs. Unfortunately, that moment of clarity would be short-lived.
>>
>>131396512

I will never not wish that Lacuna Coil would rerecord Broken Crown Halo. There's a vision there, they were writing some of their best songs in a while and fucking around with 70s prog synthesizers because Goblin was an influence, but the half of the band that left immediately after clearly phoned it in and they couldn't have gotten a blander, radio friendly mix if they tried. Most people forget this one but the half of the band that still cared had something there.

>>131400741
a lot of people give David Byrne shit for being an autistic weirdo who doesn't seem entirely human, but that wasn't his flaw. His flaw was hanging onto his spectacularly mediocre rhythm section aka the Harry and Meghan of alternative rock. That was why he used Steve Scales on "Burning Down The House", because the resident braintrust wasn't a good enough drummer to play those fills, and this gets even more apparent on Naked, which really needed a better drummer to bring out that material.

the tl;dr is that the rhythm section is two crybabies who whine that Dave was mean to them and that's why the band broke up when actually he was way more loyal to them and their mediocre musicianship than he needed to be, and they'll never ever get over it
