The middle part here isnt done needs an 808 plus getting chopped up, i also have an idea for adding a speech during that part. I need to add a sax during the guitar part and something bigger at the end.

Yeah, np. Not that it matters now, but I had a version laying around where I tried to push the loudness as hard as I could without any obvious artifacting. Might help uploading it as a dithered 16/44.1 wav instead of using any extra lossy compression.

Being forced to sit and wait to be able to finish my songs has drastically improved my production and the final versions of my songs.

What I mean is, I've been in a sort of living situation where I can't really record vocals and stuff and even songwriting a lot of the time which has led me to sit a lot longer on my demos and the songwriting and production process than I normally would.

Instead of being able to do a song in less than a week I am forced to sit on the idea and develop it over months and this has led me to making way better versions of my songs I otherwise would have made shitty fast versions of.

I'm the opposite. Most of my good songwriting happens when I'm able to sit down and draft a song from start to finish. Otherwise I just make good 1-minute demos.
However, I agree with making it evolve over time too. I'm working on an album - something that might have been good enough for a random Soundcloud release might not be up to par with the rest of your tracks. Maybe the style is too different, or you've done something too similar in another track. So making that 1st version quick (work horizontal rather than vertical), polishing the production, then making it fit into the palette of your release.

Anyway, here's a Bark Psychosis inspired thing.

The drop is more of a post-hardcore, La Dispute thing.

i didn't like his music because i have good taste, his fanboys are faggots who like it for vapid reasons like nostalgia because they associate it with some childhood memory or whatever or they like the sound quality when listening with a good sound system which may be true that his music has well above average sound quality if you stick to certain genres or even that era of pop music when people were more optimistic about digital processsing. some anons pointed to him as justification for using a DAW like fl studio but he used it basically for arrangement and then ran that arrangement through hardware. even on his live streams he supposedly ran everything through a rupert neve designs master buss processor even while live streaming. part of the reason why valhalla vintageverb is so popular is because they saw him use it on a livestream but valhalla vintageverb didn't even exist until the end of 2012 so he wouldn't have actually used it on his most popular tracks.

He obviously has fuck you money, but Joel 100% wasted money on that 5088 and it was so a mid life crisis purchase lmao

Why do people hate Waves so much? I see a lot of shit talked about them across the internet. Feels like the people most angry with them are longtime customers, so I'm guessing it's them being priced out or forced into subscription cuckery, or something, but is that it and it's not actually anything to do with the quality of their products or the companies ethics or something?

The only people still using Waves plugins are boomers who think that the only limiter in existence is the L2. There are just way better options these days. Yeah, their plugins still work and they pioneered a lot of stuff (pretty sure they were one of the first to have lookahead limiting in plugin form), but again, it's not 2002 anymore.

Really, like what (not arguing actually curious)? I thought most things were practically interchangeable from a certain point in terms of quality, with maybe some minor differences in sound that you probably won't pick up on. I am admittedly beginner and haven't tried a lot of different VST's, but this is the kind of sense I get.
>>
>>131421682
both are very strange across the board. Sounds like a patch you might find that's programmed to do random bleeps and bloops when you hold the key. Kind of quiet. Doesn't really go anywhere or feel very purposeful. Not sure what you’re trying to achieve, if anything, but if it's confuse randos on a dead general, then you got me at least.
>>
>>131422371
normies can tell the difference even though they can't really describe the specifics they know if a song sounds good that's why me despido (mixed with plugins) has 1.4M views and despacito (mixed with outboard gear) has 9,112,339,275 views (went up by like 8k just while i was typing this).
>>
>>131422431
Thanks for your feedback.

Does it need to be "purposeful"? I mean, I am not rejecting that music should have a purpose. That sounds good to me. I'm just wondering what purpose you think my music might aspire to. What purpose do you does other music have? Maybe I could try and make music that has that purpose.

I can vouch for FabFilter's stuff, namely their EQ, compressor and limiter. And I don't mean the quality (even though Pro-C2 has 4x oversampling and Pro-L2 goes up to 32x, but not that it matters in the real world). I've never used it but TDR Nova seems like a good EQ and most of their other stuff seems good. Decapitator is a distortion staple at this point. And going back to the quality, Decapitator has no oversampling whereas FabFilter Saturn 2 does (32x IIRC), but in the real world... I wouldn't worry about it.
>>
>>131422930
>>131422371
Basically, Waves have fallen behind and have been overtaken by competitors that offer far better functionality (and quality depending on if the plugin is non linear).
>>
https://voca.ro/1jvRT4HIOtXL

I'm getting hella paranoid.
>>
>>131420534
they came up at a time when there was no quality competition (i.e free shit and solid stock plugins) and only coasted on that reputation into shitty business practices (eternal sales, subscription bullshit).
almost none of their plugins are actually good by todays standards.

you're not playing the same beat or sounds so it's never going to sound like that unless you change it
>>
>>131424347
I'm aware. I'm still learning how to translate beats. I'm particularly interested in the tsch sound which sounds very heavily compressed (or crunched? Idk)
>>
>>131424384
ah, okay.
well you should consider the likely source (one of those old sample cds etc) or use something similar like any old break.
that crunch sounds much more like the result of light distortion or the colour of a sampler imo.
when it comes to transcribing drums, or anything really, it helps to manually slow it down and put it on loop.

Could I get some advice for a beginner? I keep running into this same problem where I make something that sounds alright, but after ~1min into the track I don't know where to go from there and it just dies out and I start over. I haven't actually managed to finish anything yet.

For example I made this today but I can't think of a good way to extend it: https://vocaroo.com/1jtuYCvHEw7U

Also any feedback on that piece would be appreciated. I only started 3 days ago and I don't have any musical knowledge or experience other than a 15 minute video on music theory so you should assume I don't know anything.

Here's another piece I made which I would also appreciate feedback on: https://voca.ro/11DduPu7H2HU

I suppose that one sounds finished. I'd have liked for it to be longer but I ran out of ideas at 1:30 so I just forced an ending.

>>131425092
Huh? Why? I don't see the humor
>>
>>131425105
They are nice anon, they have a clear structure and movement
Finishing pieces is the bane of every composer because it means collapsing all that potential into choices. If you run out of ideas, you can add another register with a similar melody and repurpose the other instruments to play harmony instead for example.
You can feel proud of your two pieces. Keep it up!
>>
>>131425186
>add another register with a similar melody and repurpose the other instruments to play harmony instead for example
Sorry if this is a dumb question. What is a register and what do you mean by "repurpose other instruments to play harmony"? Do you have any examples perhaps?
>>
>>131424924
>it's bad ON PURPOSE
Bro, I swear to God, we're all part of the same soul family.
>>
>>131425279
Sorry. A register is a range of pitches. If you playing say a melody in a higher octave, for example using a Piccolo, so very high pitched notes, and then you take the same melody and play it on a bass instead, you changed the register (because the bass naturally plays only lower pitched notes) by changing the instrument.
So take your midi track for your main melody, copy and paste it on a different instrument, or move the pitches one or two octaves below. Experiment with that.
The second part of the advice meant, take the instrument you were using to play the melody previously and use it instead to play the chords (the harmony) that underpin your melody. Makes sense?
>>
How come none of y'all told me that Reason is free now?
>>
>>131425526
Reason is a tranny DAW, and this is a chud general. Deal with it.
>>
>>131425505
I think I understand what you mean. It's difficult for me to know for sure though. Do you mean switch the instruments around? When you say to take the instrument that is playing the melody and use it to instead play the chords, I'm not sure what part you mean. In the first vocaroo I posted, can you tell what part is the melody? To be honest, half the time I don't even know what the melody is in the piece I am making. I just kind of add instruments that sounds good but I don't really know why I am even adding them or what the "parts" of the piece I am making are called.

Are you aware of any songs that contain an example of these techniques so I can know exactly what you are referring to?
>>
>>131425574
will I become a tranny if I use it, or will I use it if I become a tranny?

>using logic instead of pro tools
>>
>>131425939
Ok, I remade your piece with my instruments more or less to try and exemplify. You have some kind of key playing an ascending 4 note melody. The notes are D,F,A,D, basically doing a minor triad (your piece is in D minor, so a minor triad means D F A, then you add the D on a higher octave). You don't need to do that for the entire piece. So for example I took that part and altered it to play chords instead, after your initial piece stopped, instead of the DFAD repetition. For me it made it feel a bit more intimate and tender. And I took the synth you were using for texture and gave it a new variation of your melody. See if you can hear it.

Thanks, that's genuinely helpful to know, cause I have also fallen for reddit tards posting about how nothing can do it like certain Waves plug ins, so while I was always dubious because Reddit, I thought I'd try some out and yeah, not really blown away compared to stock stuff. They take a bit to load up and have an annoying loading icon at the start of any project using their plug-ins. Might just demo some other stuff and see if I really need to switch or not. Don't get me wrong, the quality on them is not bad either, but if it could be better and they are technically outdated, I'd rather get something more modern that probably gets updates when needed as well.
