Generally they were samples with next to nobody outside of avant-garde jazz circles (JoJo Mayer, and such) attempting to play on-kit. That is until guys like Otto and Jose began grafting them into numetal compositions.

There is something I really like about when one tech limitation inspires something without that limitation. One example is monophonic synths, people would make these bouncy lines that arpeggiated a chord across the whole keyboard, but it became so stylistic that people eventually started just doing that on poly synths or pianos etc. This is what I assume you're talking about with John Otto, right? One of the first drummers to take breakbeats, stylistically as they were sampled, and play them on a kit?I'm not doubting you but I am curious about that one. I could be wrong but I always assumed DJ Lethal actually did sample breakbeats for the compositions, which John Otto then just played on a kit, maybe even sometimes on top of the samples. I feel like this /must/ have happened sooner... First thing that comes to mind is stuff off Slabco, which was a lot of breakbeats + indie twee shit where some of those bands used drummers when playing live. Not like anybody cared about that shit back then, but this just got me thinkin now. I guess for a more famous example Sublime also did it

Les is the worst part of Primus. Ler and Herb were more interesting. Larry basically invented death metal and mogged most noise rock guitarists with his experimentations. Tim is still one of the most underrated drummers, it's insane how clean and reserved he could be while remaining so technical.

In the “outsider” scene, the problem is derivative music, where the artist doesn’t do anything interesting or is chasing a certain sound and failing miserably at it. As someone who listens to a lot of music, I don’t see how “outsider” music applies here, since even when it’s tedious to listen to, there’s still something to be gained from it. Bad pop is just painful to listen to.
