Billy Corgan has said that:
Stone Temple Pilots has stolen ''Suffer'' to make the song ''Plush''
Metallica has stolen ''Tales of a Scorched Earth'' to make ''Fuel''
And that Kurt Cobain has stolen his whole guitar tone from the Gish album to make Nevermind
Was he right and on point on these things or delusional cause im not really sure.

Why does this board talk about the same handful of faggot musicians over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over

What's your end game?
>>
>>131421233
No, that sounds like extreme narcissism trying to cope with artists who were more popular/better than he.
>>
remember when fatso baldo claimed to have invented the alt rock wall of sound…

SP barely fucking existed in ‘90.
>>
>>131421233
how did cobain steal a guitar tone when butch vig was responsible for that tone? plus billy brought alan moulder in specifically because he wanted to steal kevin shields's guitar tone. such a dumb bald faggot.

kek. nobody was better than the smashing pumpkins in the 90s. the siamese dream fuzz is easily the most influential guitar tone post 1990.

Nah he ripped off Loveless.

any band where the singer is not billy corgan is better than smashing pumpkins

Butch Vig heard their Godzilla cover and shifted SLTS in that direction. Billy's work with Butch certainly influenced Nevermind. But his biggest influence was on the Alt metal/rock thing Millennials were listening to.

not a rip-off. but the smashing pumpkins continue to have bigger influence on Shoegaze than MBV.
>>
>>131421233
He also said Collective soul stole his sound for Shine.
So when they went to court Ed Roland found a demo from 1989 way before the smashing pumpkins even existed.
Billy thinks everyone stole from him.
>>
>>131421476
looking at the album sales they did really well in the mid 90s.Mellon Collie is one of the very few albums of the scene that went Diamond (10+ times platinum). Only Ten and Nevermind come to mind that also went Diamond.Too bad they went downhill after that, but their 90s output is still full of bangers and fire though.

Alice in chains, soundgarden

nah, pumpkins had more artistic genre syncretism and better instrument-playing

Corgan was not a better guitarist than Cantrell, though I'd rank him above Kim Thayil
D'arcy Wretzky was not a better bassist than Mike Starr or Mike Inez or Ben Shephard
Jimmy Chamberlain was not a better drummer than Sean Kinney or Matt Cameron
We won't go there on vocals
>>
>>131422933
Chamberlain clearly stands out. He is objectively, technically superior.

>Stone Temple Pilots has stolen ''Suffer'' to make the song ''Plush''

That slow syncopated rhythm does sound like Plush, but the melody is completely different. It's a different song.

>Cobain has stolen his whole guitar tone from the Gish album to make Nevermind
I'm listening but I don't see it. Because Corgan is using a lot of classic generic bluesy guitar fillers and it's not something Cobain used at all. What guitar tone, Nevermind is mostly rhythmical chords and some noisy fillers and 'bad solos'. And I think the original production by Vig was way more flanger-y, it sounded murky and submerged in water.

Wallace just brought all that to light, made it crisp, grand, full bodied, resounding, almost symphonic (as Vig also remarked).
One rhythmical chord on Nevermind sounds like a big wall of thick raw harmony on which the vocals come with this vague echo effect and the drums pop with great highs. And a buttery bass.
The Wallace mix was inspired by Slayer's Seasons in the Abyss, an album that Cobain liked a lot.

https://youtu.be/hVJ4rYjUgX4?t=74

Hear that thick crisp grand tone? That sounds much closer to Nevermind than Gish ever did.

Yes, I posted that first here you got it from me.
But what that video 'proves' is that Cobain probably heard that riff sometime in 1990 on a bootleg tape and got inspired to write Teen Spirit. But that was the only chunk he took from this source, the rest of the song is more inspired by Pixies' Gouge away's big bassline from the verse, which probable became the song's overall melodic line. And this riff inspired from the BOC cover became its rhythmical backbone.
But the vocal phrasing, the atmospheric 2-note arpeggio in the pre-chorus, everything was of his own making. He put it all together to form something new.

And that has nothing to do with guitar tone. Nevermind doesn't sound like that live cover. The live sound is a lot dirtier.
