>Make a record that perfectly captures the dreary mood, existential dread, sardonic detachment increased tribalism and political instability of the 2020s>Release it in 2003How did they know?
Ween could actually write some decent songs, its a shame they went the comedy route
the entire second half of the 20th century could be described like that
>>131427741>>131427788Honestly I prefer the Quebec-sessions outtakes over the actual songs on the album, they're a lot darker soundinghttps://youtu.be/iMXZXZShwJA?si=1v5AgnsTz3QtvZ8uhttps://youtu.be/bn1YpQuq8uo?si=K0zl264BZnDpB6Ki
>>131427788The amount of genre hopping they do only works if they don't take themselves that seriously
>>131427741I don't know why but this album cover is a treat for the eyes, can't put my finger on it why
>>131427843It was taken from some paper games 3M used to sell in the 70s-80s
>>131427843>>131427854>"I found this at a flea market and knew instantly that this was gonna be our album cover. I handed it to the art director and told him to draw our faces over these folks. We fell in love with the color scheme" - Deaner
>>131427863They really are such based retards
>RISE>MY DAWN>YOUVE BEEN AWAKE TOO LONG>LET ME REST IN TIME WHILE I BLOW YOUR MIND
>>131427788They're such an outstanding songwriting duet, I'm mad they haven't done anything for the past 20 years. At least release a Shinola Vol.2, how fucking hard can it be to scrape an album from studio outtakes?>>131427843>can't put my finger on it whyYou're saying you can't put your finger on it?
>>131427741>increased tribalism and political instability of the 2020si don't hear this on the album at all

>>131428354>>131428364>Most people are not okay>but they're taking their siestas in the sun>Got some ideas on the way it should be>but most of 'em just carrying onThere's literally a song on the album titled "Among His Tribe"
>>131428121Such a based song
>>131428402I love the Zoomer narcissism that 2026 is the first time people have felt alienated from one another in industrial society
>>131427741>cameo in a movie nobody's fuckin seen
>>131428852>It's the only kino part of the whole shitty (but not so shitty its good) moviehttps://youtu.be/ilHLTsI8n5U?si=9Sy04A3qt4bvLJTb
>>131427741They explained it in interviews already 20 years ago. Gene was in the middle of divorcing his first wife, both him and Dean were bottoming out with drugs and alcohol. They just got dropped from their major label and went back to an independent one for the first time since they were like 20 and finally their drummer nearly died in a car crash caused by a drunk driver and nearly died having to re-learn how to walk and play drums. All this with the background of 9/11 + Iraq War and Quebec was the result. Like>>131428692 points out none of the themes are the album are "new" in any way
>>131428402>There's literally a song on the album titled "Among His Tribe"i agree it's a pretty dark record and fits well in mood of the current time, but that song just talks about salting meat, oral tradition and stuff like that from centuries ago, at least that's the vibe i'm getting from it. i know he mentions going to battle at some point in the song, but it's a pretty big stretch to compare it to the way "tribalism" is used in today's world, it would need to have some cleaner parallels for that.
>>131429229Obviously it's still done in their signature "tongue-in-cheek" way but the lyrics hint at the idea of yearning for a more "simpler" pre-historic form of tribalism as opposed to the modern post-industrial kind. Basically asking the listener what if instead of race wars/gender wars you just had wars over which group gets the best salted bear meat?
