what integrated/luf do you guys aim for when mastering? i try to aim for -10/11 but i’ve seen everything from -14 to -3https://vocaroo.com/15nuVWxoqyvhdon’t know what genre it fits in but i like it so far
>>131447980>don’t know what genre it fitsElectronica/downtempo/nu jazz/trip hop. I heard shit like this in the bar of a fancy hotel in London. Pretty much all they played. I find it jarring the way the resonating notes on the glock-sounding tune cut out suddenly - is it a sample?
>>131448026many different samples, might trim the intro and add some subtle reverb to it to smooth it out
Go on, tell me I'm shit. Make me cum.https://vocaroo.com/191knPTX1VQk>>131447980Love it, sort of. I'd minimalize the kick, just make it less individual hits but not in volume. Remove the drilly hihats as well and you have a decent neo-noir trip hop kinda thing that doesn't even sound like a faggot made it
>>131447980I like between -10 and -8. Im usually making shoegaze/post rock with a lot of drone elements. If i turn down the kick and snare i can push it harder but i prefer a punchy kit for the transients
>>131448084Can't say whether you are or not, but that track sure is shit.
>>131447479nah, pro q (from version 2 if I remember) has a "natural phase" mode that mostly avoids cramping near nyquist whereas the regular "zero latency" mode doesn't. They're both not FIR filters like the linear phase mode.
The tune I made made me cry. It's so gentle and nice. Feels like I am really there.
>>131447980I hate saying this, but it depends. A hip hop song will quickly drive the integrated LUFS value up if it has heavily compressed, long 808s because that will just naturally push the RMS level. If you're arbitrarily going to master a folk song to the same LUFS level that's expected from a trap song that has 808s that never stop sustaining, then good luck lol.
>>131448929well of course it depends, that’s why i said “aim for” like >>131448096 said, he makes a specific genre which he knows how hard he can push it, and that would apply to like neurobass or bog-standard trap slop

>>131453638Not for money, at least In terms of production, I just enjoy it for the process itself, particularly in a band context. Setting up our drums and mics for recording can be a little tedious but other than that it's a fun process for me, tracking in the room together (the drums at least) and then doing the multi tracking and mixing afterwards, layering it all together is pretty satisfying. Doesn't have the same professional sheen than if we recorded at a proper studio but it's a good learning experience anyway, and likely cheaper in the long run, having the gear on hand. I think the more DIY aspect seems to be a thing in the scene here atmComposition-wise, I haven't had a huge amount of fulfillment from writing stuff lately like I used to. I think it's just been a pressure thing trying to write for a potential album for our band, and I just feel a bit boxed in and burnt out, having to juggle multiple roles at once (writing, recording, mixing etc) I made some shitposty Scooter-inspired track a little while back, far outside my wheelhouse but it was refreshing to make, just for the novelty. I should probably start making stuff on the side again, for my own enjoyment. It'll probably help the other material anyway since I'll be in a better headspace for it and it won't just feel like work all the time

>>131467503pro-l clicks once you learn what your go-tos are for the basics, when see what extremely high gain actually works in a mix, and when you finally know how to use it and compare it to comparable results from other limiters and clippers/satuation combos.for me it's obviously the 1176 la2a combo, but it's often overkill.ITB i like supercharger for *some* character compression *sometimes.* basic duty i just stick to ableton glue. pro-c 2 for my sound design gigs solely because it's faster, but truth be told i've never run a test where i wasn't eventually able to get the exact same snap from the stock ableton compressor- but like i said, it's faster and that time counts for something.i think ignoring all (most) plugin slop or situations where you *need* a certain hardware sound, compressors are more a personal thing than other types of processing- if you have the ears to know what sound you're going for it's more a matter of what gets you there with the least work.doesn't make any sense to me but like half of the boomers i've been in a session with are still using Waves R-Comp all over the place and they get the job done with it.

That said, I think there's more of a problem with the composition. The bass is way too busy and I feel like there's a few chords that don't work with the lead in various parts (not the 'this adds some nice spice' kind, but the 'this sounds wrong and shit' kind). It feels like each element is too separate an idea from each other and it fucks with the rhythm/flow of it all - nothing is complimentary or supporting, it's just all there trying to compete at once and it sounds messy. There some nice ideas in there, though, like the bends/slides on the lead part.

Is that Chris Lord-Alge guy a fucking huckster fraud for Waves or something? There's a video popped up of a 'mixing masterclass' with him, and he's sitting there in a studio filled with probably 100's of 1000's dollars worth of studio equipment, struggling to pretend that he just uses a bunch of the Waves plug ins to mix guitar and bass and almost nothing else (the plug-ins with his name on them, of course). He comes across like he is lying through his fucking teeth and struggling to say something that sounds pertinent without giving any actual details away, it makes him sound like a fool that doesn't fully understand what he is doing. At one point he says 'yeah, I just use this plug in on bass DI with this exact setting' and it's a preset for vocals, apparently. Not that it has to be used on vocals just because the preset says so, more so that there's a bunch of 'bass' presets that even the guy himself doesn't even bother with, so what's the point?
>>131478216https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-wch_zWrV8there's a ton of shilling in general. don't believe the hype. the real successful producers and engineers use a lot of hardware.

>>131478317>>131478382That's not really what my issue is. It's that this guy is apparently revered as some god-like mixer, but he comes across as a complete buffoon that talks in abstractions to hide the fact that they don't know anything substantial or technical. He isn't prepared for the questions and is visibly flustered by some of them because he's clearly terrible at improvising and knows it. I understand he's being paid for his time to shill shit, but at least make the bare minimum effort to make yourself look good in the process. It's just frustrating that companies have so little respect for their audiences/customers that they are willing to put out shit that actively makes them look bad and still get away with it.
>>131478971>It's just frustrating that companies have so little respect for their audiences/customersthe company-audience relationship is not sacred, and the fact that the plugin industry makes any attempt at all to act like they "respect" its customers sill in this day and age when we have decades of research showing that it literally doesn't matter sets a bar well above the average in every other industry.the company doesn't care about you and you're foolish to expect the facade. get over it

>>131482307>pro piracy anti plagiarismAgree but I think a lot of people get hyper focused on the need for a sample library the same way they get focused on hardware. What I'm trying to say is samples are really easy to make either from field recording or chopping existing audio. And by chopping I'm talking about say taking a handful of individual notes from a violin concerto and using those to voice a midi instrument, not as much in the hip-hop sense where they are taking swathes of another song wholesale.

When i'm working on a song I tend to be on headphones, then will check it through my speakers occasionally to see how it's sounding. Headphones makes it easier to catch smaller/quieter details and I find I will make compositional decisions around this, only to find that the smaller details don't actually come through on speakers that much (if at all sometimes) which throws me off and makes me wonder if I need to rebalance things. How do you guys deal with this (if at all)? Are you supposed to listen on headphones and get the same experience as you would listening on speakers or am i being dumb? I think I'm overthinking it and it will obviously be easier to hear more details with headphones, but still wonder which is best to mix/create on.
>>131488329yeah that’s one of the main reasons common wisdom is to do most of your mixing on speakers. headphones exaggerate and it’s just easier to lose sight of the big picture.FOR ME the mix is 90+% on speakers. headphones are really just a double checking and additional small eq changes thing for me- i have headphones that i check specific things on, eg one pair i know shows distortion in the 2-4k range especially well but sucks ass for everything under 300 hz.you should shift away from caring about “small detail” to overall balance, which should make up the bulk of mixing and composition in general.

I stopped working on this for like a month or two and came back to it recently, been changing a few things and trying to get a proper sounding mix. My main goal is getting a lo fi house vibe going but my previous mixes were sounding too muffled or some shit according to the AI, the track also has a spoken vocal sample which I removed here so it doesn't get in the waySound design and mixing take so much fucking time, especially when you're not a pro or have shit equipment, my IEMs don't really pick up the muffledness or the too much low end, it sounds normal until I put on my other pair of shitty headphones which are very low end focused and muffledhttps://vocaroo.com/1lWt7Gg6VWiU
