>>131454443witchfynde
Production's on a bit of the generic side and I'd argue Eric Singer is one of the more uninteresting drummers to pass through Sabbath, but the songs themselves are pretty great across the board. Not top-tier Sabbath, but an underrated one, absolutely.I feel like the final version is better than the Ray Gillen one, too. He has a brighter, higher range than Martin but his phrasing's a bit all over the place - Nicholls says that Gillen was great live but it was like pulling teeth getting good performances out of him in the studio.
>>131454470that shirt’s sick. had no idea James was a fan of witchfynde, either.
>>131454501you didn't know that james liked NWOBHM...?

>>131459437Out of all the 1 vote records, I think Dust's self titled is the most deserving of making it in the list. This album cover just screams metal.
>>131459478I'm genuinely shocked that record only has one vote. >>131454443I always found it weird that people call this album overrated. Overplayed for sure, but that's because the album is damn good. There is not a single day when I don't want to sing along to Rapid Fire.
>>131465206i think british steel is pretty evenly rated. has some great songs, a few good ones, and one that just fucking sucks. it's defenders of the faith that i think is fucking overrated. if that album didn't have a perfect A side, it would NOT be as loved as it is.

>>131470668>The heaviest song on the album imoi think switch 625 takes the cake. that's a pretty heavy riff and it only builds and builds as the song goes on.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AB4I_tV6QNE
>>131454443really, really really good uspm. my only complaint is that sometimes the singer's vocals are slightly out of sync with the instrumentation, but it doesn't pop much and it only happens a few times throughout the record. otherwise, fantastic release. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_meFgfHMrQ2Ak1Cfs4gZYw3bqM8lnynLR8
>>131454443the first metal album from brazil is motorhead worship with borderline non-existent production, guitars that sound like chainsaws, and the pedal put to the metal (seriously, this shit's fast for 1982 and consistently so) in half of the songs on offer. but ignoring all of that, what i liked most about this record is that it's just fun - the entire way! it's like the best albums from motorhead and exciter, where even in the slower songs there's this latent energy in every riff, and you can tell the band is having just as much fun playing these songs as you are listening to them.it goes without saying, but i HIGHLY recommend this. a country's first metal album has no business being this fucking cool. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_mIBT1msXmybAfJ2CPOKDNHyXc8hjQY9u0
>>131471189It's kinda crazy how Brazil went from this to producing some of the most extreme metal albums up to that point in just three years
>>131471262yeah just a three year gap between that and shit like bestial devastation is fucking nuts. that's not to say that that stress album ain't extreme for 1982 - i'd say it's in the outer periphery of that spectrum - same as motorhead, but in only three years they went from that, to fucking antichrist by sepultura. that's undoubtedly one of the heaviest songs recorded at that time. heavier than anything off seven churches, a good majority of USDM demos, and so on.
>>131454443good meat and potatoes metal album, very consistent even if it's rarely masterful. camino al sepulcro was a badass song, though. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kzRFw2hL_z9KKTBP49ZQmjSN1UodcWTDU
>>131454428Only I know that the cover of this album is the torso of a bodybuilder
>>131465206I like it as is, it was one of my defining albums when I started listening to metal, one of the albums that has one of the most iconic openers, but these days I have to say that the real british steel is Sin After Sin. It even has overcast weather on the cover.

>>131475538>1. Black Sabbath - Black Sabbathshould be in the top five, but not the #1. i think paranoid is a better introduction to heavy metal across the board than sabbath's S/T.>2. Deep Purple - Machine Headyeah i'd say that's about right, a monumental influence on both hard rock and heavy metal.>3. Rainbow - Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow (1975)ehhh. that's a great album but i'd never put it as a gateway to the genre. rising is far more appropriate.>4. KISS - Destroyerthis album barely even has any metal on it, and while they were influential to metal - they are not on the same level as sabbath, purple, rainbow etc. shouldn't even be here imo.>5. UFO - Lights Outi like this album but it isn't essential listening for a newcomer. you could make a case for the title track, but the full album? nah.>6. Judas Priest - Stained Classpretty much the only album from the 70s you could say is flat-out heavy metal, with little to no rock influence. agreeable.>7. Scorpions - Lovedrivewhy this one? that album's great but taken by force has some of the heaviest songs of the fucking decade, would've made more sense to choose that.>#8. Motorhead - Overkillagreeable.>9. Girlschool - Demolition... seriously? >10. Van Halen - Fair Warningdebut's more deserving for the historical impact but not a terrible choice.>11. Saxon - Denim and Leatheri think this should be wheels of steel, but i wouldn't fight over it.>12. Venom - Welcome to Hellno complaints, fair spot for this one.>13. Raven - Rock Until You Drophm... i haven't listened to this one in a while but i think faster than the speed of light or all for one would've been better picks.>14. Iron Maiden - Number of the Beastnever been the biggest fan of this release but it is very important so whatever, fine.>15. Twisted Sister - Under the Bladegood choice, bit of a deeper cut and not my first choice but they explain their rationale, and it was very influential on the east coast thrash scene.
>>131475538>16. Def Leppard - Pyromaniahistorically important to rock music and while i personally wouldn't put it first-up (mainly because this album really doesn't have much heavy riffing, it's more rock than metal) but i see it.>17. Dio - Holy Divershould be way higher up>18. Motley Crue - Shout at the Devilyeah alright. this was actually one of the first metal albums i ever listened to and it did help me get hooked on the sound so it ain't a bad choice.>19. RATT - Out of the Cellarnope. good album, though.>20. Accept - Balls to the Wallheavily disagree on this one. solid record but restless and wild washes it away in every fucking aspect. also turn me on is a pretty bad song.>21. Tank - Honour and Bloodshould be filth hounds of hades, that one's a lot more "direct" in its sound and appealed to me a lot more from the getgo than honour and blood did.>22. Metallica - Ride the Lightningsurprised this wasn't higher up tbdesu. >23. Megadeth - KIMBwhy ever would you pitch this album to someone over peace sells or rust in peace? not a bad release but just... why?>24. Anthrax - Spreading the Diseaseagreeable, probably their best album imo. >25. W.A.S.P. - The Last Commandfucking retarded choice, this is just their debut album but with more filler and less hits.overall not awful, but a lot of these choices to me are either stupid, or contrarian for the sake of being so. seriously, why the fuck would you have the last command over the s/t?

>>131454443Everyone knows picrel is great, but I don't see enough people talk about how unique the atmosphere and mood of this album is. It sounds so cosmic, romantic, majestic and epic all at once. It knows EXACTLY when and how to use beautiful guitar melodies, quiet acoustic passages, choral backing vocals, insane high screams and even some subtle synths. The drum sound rocks too. It just sounds breathtaking.

>>131454443could've been a great epic metal record but is castrated by the title track, kamba and escape. while the very coarse guitar tone really complements the metal here (ella es especial, sin piedad and victamas de la noche are fucking awesome songs), i don't think it works with the softer material on this album at all, and clashes horribly with the title track and kamba's melodies. escape at least has the guitars toned down considerably, but regardless of that it's still a pretty boring ballad that doesn't go anywhere. however this is still worth listening to for the A-side, which in my opinion has no issues and is about on par with the stuff on luzbel's debut. here's the download for the album since this one's kind of annoying to find complete.https://files.catbox.moe/ma4aii.zip

>>131454443take my heart is a pretty limp ballad, and there's a pointless instrumental towards the end but the rest of this album is some fuckin' great melodic rock. in the night is a phenomenal ballad (ballad? epic? sounded like a ballad to my ears but it could go both ways tbdesu) and tear the roof off just rips hard, one of triumph's heaviest cuts. was also a big fan of the opening track, it just rocks. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lHONpgu9Hsr_YfvhRk6PQwmTv8mPXXIQ8

>>131454443first two tracks and the closer are the best by a wide margin but there's still some good stuff besides those. i also like the album art, just looks fucking cool and does a good job conveying the more mysterious, adventurous side of the band's sound. i'd say track it down and give it a shot, especially if you like melodic, keyboard-laced metal like pretty maids. (funnily enough, this band's danish too)
>>131454443starts off very promising but quickly descends into "eh, it's alright" territory for pretty much everything sans the first two songs. can't really recommend this as a full experience but you should ABSOLUTELY listen to fugitive, the first track off the record. it's one of bow wow's most energetic (and heavy) songs, and is stylistically right at home with the speedier stuff off signal fire.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jQn8tdy4Ic

1971's chart is done! sorry for not getting this finished sooner, since friday i've been stuck in limbo deciding what album i wanted to base this chart on. i ended up going with look at yourself for the motif, since i actually found the font they used for that record relatively easily and i think it looks pretty nice.

>>131454443markedly different from resistencia's debut. whereas hecho en venezuela was full-blown speed metal (and sometimes even proto-thrash) this record goes in largely the opposite direction, trading much of the speed and ferocity of that record for more intricate, structured songs and atmosphere. and i'd say it paid off, because this record's just as; if not better than the debut.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ic7tizFRabk

>>131579336>>131579521I think I was the first one to nominate The Who and I did it to kinda test the waters to see how "soft" we were allowed to go. I would have no issue with it being dismissed, or being replaced by something else on the chart.
>>131475633I dont really know Girlschool or Raven but they are playing a gig with Alcatraz near me later this year. It's good to see these 80s bands still playing gigs. Saw Acid Reign at same place recently, Daze of the Week their latest release is a really good album.
>>131583494alrighty then, i'll go replace the who it with another one of the 1-votes.>and I did it to kinda test the waters to see how "soft" we were allowed to go.personally i think a good litmus test for whether something is too soft for the '70s charts, is if it's heavier or lighter than any of the classic zeppelin records. anything heavier than them is definitely legible, but anything softer is really testing the limits of hard rock or might not even be hard rock at all.
here's the revised 1971 chart, replaced the who - who's next with november - november 2:a.
>>131454443the first half is quite a bit better than the first, having all of the highlights of the record and where most of the more experimental, unique riffing pops up. the second half on the other hand isn't bad, but there's very little of it that stuck with me, partly because most of it is mid-paced and not particularly energetic, nor does it show off joey belladonna's vocals that well. in my opinion anthrax is at their best when they play fast and melodic, and there's some faster material here, like the edge of perfection (best song off this by a country mile, fantastic tune); but just not enough as i'd like in a release from these guys. overall a pretty decent release, and it beats just about everything else this decade from the rest of the big 4 and many of the legacy bands in general.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fAg7Qk79wA

>>131454443this album has two things (well, one and a half) going for it: a fantastic mix where every instrument is clearly audible, and a vocalist who sounds like the guy from budgie. now the singer is pretty damn good for most of the runtime, but there's these little parts strewn throughout where his lines come in just a bit out of sync without the instrumentation, and that started to distract me after a while. but outside of that this is still a fun record, even if i think it takes a few songs to really get going. all of the great material is in the back half imo.https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL44gxJwuwoaZvr_-vCdyQSxFDK5Tyz3rA
>>131624939Always wondered what their next album would have sounded like if Rob had stayed in the band.
>>131454443cool album art but the positives end there. to start off with, i don't like the vocalist. his light, almost airy tone doesn't have any power behind it; and i could excuse that if there were interesting riffs, but for the most part: there isn't. also during their solos, the band really like to strip away the rhythm guitar, and that works in a song like exciter because the melodies are actually good and propel it forward, but here they just repeat a few progressions, then change it up slightly; rinse and repeat until the solo's done. there's a song halfway through the album that opens with a sick riff and leads you to think it's gonna be this kickass ripper but no, instead the momentum is freakin' cut at the knees by it suddenly going to a limp-dick solo.is there anything good on this album? outside of the first song, and the two closing tracks (one of which is a cover), no, and that first song still has plenty of baggage dragging it down. seriously, how could you craft a trad metal record this bereft of life? like there's nothing here that's awful, but jesus christ this shit made me want to fall asleep. EASILY the weakest release i've heard from the year so far.
