When I got Sims 2 the very first thing I looked up was how to put the teenage female clothes on the teenage male sims, didn't ask myself why, didn't occur to me that wasn't a normal thing to do, it was just my automatic reaction on autopilot. When my bones started getting more masculine in my face and ribcage with puberty it put chills up my spine that never went away, and I started taking white-hot baths and using my laptop on my lap heating my balls in an attempt to stunt my puberty, unsuccessfully. I didn't know there were even words for this stuff. After starting estrogen as an adult the discomfort I felt associated with my masculine traits (the ones affected by HRT at least) went away linearly with the effects of the estrogen increasing.I grew up in the 90s pre-internet and I didn't know trans people were a thing until I was 14 and was first exposed to the subject of LGBT people in high school, never saw it on the TV or anything growing up, so I don't think it was the result of social influence. My mum took 9 years trying to have kids and had severe hormonal problems from PCOS, and my dad has a bunch of genetic issues and was clearly a poor match. While not proven, I don't think it's beyond the realm of reason for me to suspect there is some sort of obscure circuitry we have, to do with brain/body-image mapping, that is easily upset by various forms of neurodevelopmental insult and leads to the expression of this kind of phenomenon, so highly correlated with other forms of neurodivergence such as autism etc. (N.B. a bizarrely high proportion of trans people have genetic, physical, connective tissue disorder symptoms before starting any kind of medical treatment), without necessitating an *entirely* social explanation.
