Mike Love as a lyricist is a black belt. He's up there with Bob Dylan.
His voice is unique, mid and punchy. Without that Mike Love tone it's doubtful that the Wilson brothers would have made it out of working at a hamburger stand.

I have a weird fondness for Mike Love. There are so many old retired boomers in California just like him in pretty much every single way. I feel a weird, comforting familiarity whenever I see his old ass boomer face.

you nailed it. i'm the same way with him, i don't know why either but you probably explain better than i can.
i can't help but like him and smile when i see him wearing one of his goofy ball caps.
he seems like a normal chill harmless dude so i always laugh when people have such a visceral hatred for him.

I'm unironically going to be sadder when he dies than when Brian Wilson died because I actually think he deserves better. He was a fantastic songwriter. I will die on the hill that this was one of the best Beach Boys songs of all time and it was written and performed by him.

Meanwhile, he seems to have a reputation where people think he can only write corny, inauthentic shit. It's just not fair

his lyrics are actually really good when you think about it. yeah they can sound a bit corny now but in the early 60's they were hip as fuck. i get around has gangster lyrics ffs. "my buddies and me we're gettin real well known, yeah the bad guys know us and they leave us alone"

so true. that's what i like about him, he never seemed to be something other than himself. his sometimes corny and cringe behavior on stage is just endearing

the fact that Mike is a known pedophile didn't help

too bad that like nearly every early 60s powerhouse, they were seen as yesterday's news by 67 and lost their label and radio support

it's like the people who don't "get" Frank Sinatra and find his singing lazy and enervating, but in the 40s that style was the epitome of cool
>>
>>131490541
so true. you also have to consider the context. 60's california was like 90 % white with many of northern european heritage so it's no wonder the lyrics may seem a bit corny, where the hippest and most dangerous thing you could experience was like a drag race or surfin some real high waves. they sang about their experiences so of course there was never going to be any "cool" lyrics about the hard life and so on

His 60's work was alright, but man do I hate everything he did in the late 70s, 80s and 90s. Lest we remember mumble-rapping in an MV featuring women a quarter his age.

>cousins start a band
>decide to take short breaks from slaying puss to back them up
>make some money and get to tour around the U.S. and then the world because you talk about surfing (which you’ve never done but hey it’s California, people will be nice about that since everyone here of all places understands a performance)
>go on tour and cousin Brian stays home sick (more pussy for you lol)
>come back
>he’s hired a librarian to play kazoo or whatever the fuck and decided to reveal to the public that you all do drugs

>Brian leaves behind some music but heads to the funny farm

So was Michael Jackson
So was countless other musicians
So is like half of the Catholic Clergy
So was the current President that received over 77 million votes AFTER many multi-year long smear campaigns that sought to expose him

You're getting hung up on Mike Love specifically because you're an autistic retard that took a special interest in him and need to virtue signal how much of an anti-pedo you are every time hi name is brought up. Yes faggot we get it, pedos are bad, now let us discuss music you annoying asshole
>>

Not even close, that's vastly, vastly overstated

And no the President is not one either

In terms of real pedos there's only been a few

Brian deserved way better, his life was just one misery after another. Mike got his credits and money for his contributions
And Mike can only write corny stuff
>>131489848
That's a corny song and the lyrics are not gangster at all even for the 60s
>>
>>131493535
I think the problem is that modern society tends to group pedophilia, hebephillia and ephebophilia together even though they're not the same thing from a clinical perspective but are nevertheless seen as morally wrong from a societal perspective. Power dynamics and all that

>Brian deserved way better, his life was just one misery after another.
At one point sure but he started getting more recognition as a songwriter and producer in the 2000s. Mike deserved better because I think he was a good songwriter and most people just see him as some corny boomer who ruined the Beach Boys for wanting to "stick to the formula". The most ironic part about this though is that if you actually look at their discography, most of the corny beach related shit was actually written by Brian. Brian became overrated because people coddled him for being mentally ill (Cluster A and probably autistic too if this collaboration is anything to go by https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--a78z8kvww)
>>
>>131493619
All true. Mike was and is a corny boomer who wanted them to stick to the formula, he helped out on some nice songs but I'd say he's properly rated, listen to his solo career if you want to hear Mike without the Beach Boys. Brian had way more than autism, he wasn't coddled either he was tortured for a decade by a Jew psychiatrist who wanted to steal all his money and give himself songwriting credits before brainwashing Brian into leaving everything in his will to Landy.

I don't believe Brian became overrated

Cutesy was commercial in the early 60s. This was an era when 11 year old girls were the only discernible audience for pop.
>>
>>131493781
We've heard Looking Back With Love. It's not pretty.
>>
That said, Mike did have the most radio-friendly voice of the group and they wouldn't have had hits without him.

in the context of ultra white, rich and ultra safe california i'd say i get around is a hip and cool song
>>
>>131495435
also a real nice bass sound to his voice. his bass vocals are central to their sound
>>
>>131493619
>Brian became overrated because people coddled him for being mentally ill
there's some truth to this. and i've heard that brian also used his mental illness to get what he wanted and to wriggle himself out of stuff. imagine if he had a real good tard wrangler who really wanted the best for him and not just access to his money. we could've gotten even more brian wilson kino music
