Where do I start with City Pop?
It's just pop music.listen to something more compositionaly and contextually interesting

>>131497737City pop is peak desu. Lots of highly talented people on it, from the musicians on the backing bands, to the singers (some of them genuinely impressive) to the mixing / mastering engineering teams, which made the music sound so good it's actually audiophile tier.

>>131498179I am a fan but I understand if people feel like its cheesy. It has that similar feeling to later prog rock where its like, yeah, you can hear that they are great musicians but, like, the funky parts aren't that "funky", its a little rigid like Japanese jazz is that way as well.
>>131497714Skip all the normie tier most famous city pop songs, aka "Stay with me", "Telephone number" (the "awoo" song), and the fucking Plastic Love song. Research for albums a bit away from that. Go late 70's instead of late 80's. Listen to entire albums. Two recs, both rarely known, but really damn good:-"R" by Reimi-Pearl Pierce, by YumingOut of the most famous albums in the genre, I'd pick Mignonne by Taeko Ohnuki and Love Trip by Takako Mamiya. Genuinely outstanding stuff.
>>131498419I think it only got cheesy by the mid to late 80s, although even the cheesy ones have good stuff in em. My issue with that music is when a particular song gets overplayed to death (Stay with me for example) and yeah its OK but then you check out the album and it sucks. There's a lot more consistency if you look at lesser known albums. As for Japanese jazz, I'm a huge fan and collector of it too, not just fusion like casiopea but actual traditional jazz, and I think most of it is outstanding. Especially when it comes to traditional jazz. I'd understand it more from the fusion bands. To be perfectly clear, this is the kind of music I play on my highest end sound system.

Out of time by The WeekndOr at least anything by Momoko Kikuchi
I don't really get the appeal, the western bands they are copying sound way better
>>131500131Name one. I'll wait.
>>131497714one of my favs, not strictly city pop tho, it's a fusion between city pop, jazz and r&b>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9K-lgiTaWAUalso here's a spotify playlist I made where I save essential city pophttps://open.spotify.com/playlist/6c6wZA9c54HOwSYzYntuMt?si=27ad846c216a4830

>>131506420As someone who keeps digging deep into japanese music every day and has been into city pop for 10 years now, you can pretty much skip the Plastic Love meme entirely. There is SOO much more.

>>131497714Just open a compilation video or a playlist on YouTube. That's how you listen to City Pop, not worth taking a deeper dive into it.
>>131507201Opposite actually. It's not worth to listen to the singles on youtube playlists / compilations (they're always the same few songs anyway) and instead research and listen to full albums, especially if you have access to early 80's masters for best sound quality. A lot of city pop albums are audiophile tier if you get the early masters.

>>131511051These are Sophistipop, not City Pop. Western City Pop is more like this:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1fll9DHS1whttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PjXP6KRED_Uhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Har7zOu2kikhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zQ4AHH3-iU
