i either jam along with records or put my own backing track on a looper to see how it actually sounds in context. I don’t like discrete backing tracks because they are typically lifeless and tailored to a specific thing like noodling over a very specific mode or scale. they have too much space. if I’m working strictly on technique I’ll do a metronome only set to click on either 1 and 3 or on a 16th note of a random beat. my metronome can also completely drop out for a few bars at a time randomly which is really helpful for not rushing or dragging.
>>
>>131499667
I like my drives before my modulation effects, but you do you homie. solid setup, the backwards tele plate is gearpage tier boomerslop though.
>>
>>131499692
telecasters are boomer slop, it doesn't matter how the control plate is oriented
>>
>>131499713
Nah that's like saying acoustic guitars are boomerslop, partially true, but they're also the closest you can get to an uncolored canvas in an electric guitar. If you can't sound good on a tele you're probably just not a very good guitarist.

It's 2026 uncs, all guitars are boomer coded. Guitar also = dork time.
>>
acoustic guitars have been in vogue for 600 years. electrics didn’t even survive 50
>>
I'm playing music with friends, including a second guitar player.
I use a Dual Terror amp, and I'd like to gift him an amp for his birthday; what amp would be complementery?
>>
>>131499842
depends entirely on what guitars you both are using. they all exist in different frequency ranges

Not true. Zoomers and Aoomers are selling out tours by boomer buttmetal bands like Crowbar and Pentagram. The nigslop beats era is seemingly finally over. The kids want to learn how to play instruments again, probably more enthusiastically than even my generation (early 2000s)
>>
>>131499851
I'm using a standard strat or a gibson nighthawk.
He's using a modern cort guitar.
We mostly play 80s punk rock.

Yeeeeah. that's why guitars are boomer coded, because only boomers play them. When a zoomie band starts doing massive sellout tours you may speak again.
>>
>>131499968
one person should play single coils the other should play humbuckers. there isn’t enough sonic room for two humbuckers unless you cut out a lot of the lows use a mid-forward tone like the Allman Brothers did

Interesting, I didn't think about this.

>>
>>131500597
In what way?
>>
>>131500645
there are so many extraneous factors along the signal chain that can affect tone that the only way to know how something really sounds is to play it yourself as part of your own setup
>>
>>131500694
that doesn't really follow from his videos. he tests each part of the signal chain in isolation and demonstrates that there is no one thing that is the magic sauce of tone. it's just layering clipping and EQ in sequence. when you mentioned youtube gear videos being pointless i thought you were getting at how his points are only relevant for recorded tone, not live tone. which is a valid point. your point wasn't

But he also did the same tests for microphones and preamps
>>
>>131500737
I thought he was saying that watching people demo gear was pointless because differences between gear are so minute that they could be explained simple by imperfect tuning pick attack etc

>>131500948
True!

>>131499713
Zoomers are so fucking dumb but think they are so wise...Going to be absolutely glorious to watch them crash and burn into middle-age/irrelevance. Half them will probably "un-alive" themselves when reality/life smacks them in the face...

Oh, hold on, that's the guy from the Smifs.
Yeah the Smifs have nice songs. I mean to each their own.
>>
>>131502155
My ears are quite good, I may miss the note/scale, but I can, for a great part, easily discern sections of songs.
>>
>>131502155
you don't even understand what you are trying to say you're so dumb you can't understand the nuance.
By doing the ear training and applying active listening that IS dissecting the song Paco, nobody on this planet can hear a complex song one time and instantly play it perfectly, they have to actively listen multiple times which is what we call dissecting, jfc
>>
>>131502398
>waaaaaahhh I have to listen to songs I like multiple times waaaahhhhhhh

This. Intermodulation distortion sounds god awful. Honestly the overtones are so aggressive in heavily distorted music that a power chord is really more of a power note, it’s acting more like a single note than serving any harmonic function

“Harmonic minor” isn’t a thing. The minor key almost always uses the major V and doesn’t use the raised leading tone in any other context. It’s rare for a song to NOT mix minor key “flavors” between natural and harmonic if the harmonic is used (and if it’s not used, typically bVII is used for dominant function, not minor v, and the chords function more like relative major with deceptive/backdoor cadence)

This just isn't true, you are ignoring the obvious phrygian dominant sound (V7#9) ((Jimi Hendrix chord)). Also ignoring that minor keys are very different. A ii7b5 is not the same as vii7b5, nor does this have anything to do with bVII. The borrowed chord you are thinking of is the big 2 (II7), which is borrowed from the relative minor (being treated as harmonic minor and not aeolian). Also your minor v comment isn't even about harmonic minor, it's seventh is raised, you are thinking of melodic minor

I got lost in my sauce, Jimi Hendrix chord is lydian dominant, from melodic minor. V7b9 is phrygian dominant, frequently used to make a V sound diminished.

Harmonic minor is the name for a scale shape, yes, but it isn’t a key. You don’t write “in harmonic minor”, it’s simply a way the notes are arranged in the minor key when a V chord is present/implied. Like a song would be in C minor, or B minor, not “in C harmonic minor”, that’s not a thing.

>>131504788
Neither of those has anything to do with the bVII. The bVII is the backdoor dominant in minor, it’s used because it’s the diatonic dominant of the relative major. A dominant needs a tritone collapse to function, because of this you need to raise the 3rd in the diatonic minor v to make it a V chord and get that leading tone. If you don’t do this, you instead use the diatonic tritone to build your dominant, which is on the bVII (the V of the relative major).

Actually try this sometime. Play (e.g.) Am Dm FMaj G7 Am and see if that isn’t a sound you recognize from EVERYWHERE.

NTA but I tried it and it sounds like a normal diatonic progression. But what is the thingy called that I'm doing in the second progression? like Am>Dm>D7>G>E7>A and so on until I get back to G
I wanna understand more of key changing harmonies, like in jazz tune like Tune Up the II V I cycles from Fm>Bb7>Eb to Ebm>Ab7>Db
Still a II V I but the last chord (Major) became the ii minor of the next progression. Is that the backdoor anal substition or what are those things?

It's just secondary dominants. You can do a V-I or a ii-V-I in basically any key at any time and the pull is so strong it will work.

Like if you were in C, and you played Dm, G7, Am, Bm, E7, A, that would work, just because Bm E7 A (ii V I in A) is such a strong progression that it makes sense on its own. How you get from Am to Bm doesn't really matter; the Bm "doesn't work" to your ear until it does because the chords after it justify it.

You can do this to kind of tie yourself to wherever you want. If you have nice voice leading or any kind of semi-plausible sonic relationship between two chords, you can go from one to the other, and if you then use that chord as part of a dominant cadence (V I or ii V I), it kind of "justifies itself back in time" to explain how you got there. This is how you get
>go from major chord to the same chord but minor, only now it's part of a ii V
the move from Eb to Ebm is kind of weird in most contexts and if you just left it there it would sound jarring, but you retroactively justify the weirdness by making that minor chord part of a ii V. It explains itself after the fact, which is what makes it musically cool. It's confusing at first and then the pattern emerges from the chaos.

Hell, you don't even need to do major to minor jumps either. A V-i works just as well as a V-I (or near enough), plenty of jazz standards just cycle ii V, ii V, ii V where each V lands on a minor i which is treated as the next ii (e.g. Dm G7, Cm F7, Bbm Eb7, and so on). Incidentally, since ii V I works, that means ii V vi (backdoor cadence) works just as well. So you can get to any minor chord by doing the ii V that would land on it from relative major (e.g. Dm G7, Am D7, Em A7, and so on)

Functional harmony is kind of silly. You basically have 2 tonics, 2 subdominants, and 4 dominants, and you can kind of make any chain of "subdominant, dominant, tonic" you like and that sequence of 3 chords is basically guaranteed to make sense.

Secondary dominants, gocha. At this stage of my scrub ears in jazz the major to minor/moving ii V I's don't sound too weird these days except when Coltrane does his version on these changes where the modulations are really out there but still is related to what you're saying - they're tied by the cadence. I'm kinda getting the feeling that old jazz doesn't really treat the "1000 chords to an audience of 3" as individual chords, but more about them being organized in cadences like 2 5 1s or 1 6 2 5s etc.
Rather than the daunting task of trying to catch a "chord scale" or mode for every chord that passes by at 120bpm or whatnot.
Thanks for the write up, appreciate the effort and the info.
>>
>>131507760
Yeah jazz is basically “ii V: The Genre: The Movie: The Experience”. I read somewhere people who perform jazz professionally are like 4x as good as other musicians at identifying ii-V movements in bursts of musical information because it’s the backbone of what they do. They recognize it like a chef recognizes the presence or absence of salt.

I personally hate the “chord scale” approach to understanding music, it’s literally only useful for trying to improvise over chord changes, it does a terrible job of giving you understanding of musical context and is more bad information than good. It’s better to understand
>what key am I in right now
>where in that key is the harmony resting
>what chromatic alterations to the key are being made
And use that to inform the “scale” you play; you pick the scale that corresponds to the key you’re in, alter that scale based on the current chromatic alterations made (distinct from the alterations due to temporarily changing keys, as in a secondary ii V), and then “hover” at the right harmonic spot, hitting chord tones, passing over non-chord tones, and returning to the root.
>>
picking up bass more I am way more motivated to learn theory. Before playing guitar I can play along with songs and know a few scales and everything, but with the bass now since you can kinda learn "everything" you need to play bass in just a few days (scales, and some common lines and such) I'm now drawn to the more complex musical stuff like REALLY getting into theory, and getting the rhythm down. on guitar i've been mediocre at best with keeping time and staying on beat like I can do it but get lost halfway through a song that's anything other than a 4/4 blues standard since that's 99% of what I play anyway. Bass is getting me into way more stuff and now that im into more with the bass it's also motivating me to get into that same stuff on guitar. Bass might be the best motivator I've had

It’s not really a mode either. A mode is like, a way of looking at a key. Like Dorian is “major key from the perspective of the minor ii”. Harmonic minor is a temporary scale shape that comes up sometimes when dealing with minor keys but it only exists AS part of a mixture, typically. Like just from the fact that your i7 is gonna use the regular 7th flat scale degree rather than the raised leading tone, you kind of can’t even play a normal i chord in minor if the 7 is always raised.

Harmonic minor is like, a toaster with the bread down. When you use a toaster that’s a temporary state it ends up in as part of getting shit done. You don’t go “ok let me get out my toaster with the bread down now and use that”, you just take your toaster and use it and it winds up in that state temporarily as part of that process.
>>
>>131509634
the way i think about it is natural minor just sucks and harmonic minor leads back to the 1 better so if you want to play in a minor scale composers like harmonic minor because it sounds better

The nashville school of music is so american. The immediacy of theory, the focus on songwriting, even the subsitution of note names with letters makes it look so cheap, so scientific in the worst possible way, the way of the gaze, of "getting down to business".
>>
Why are modes described as a scale starting on a different note?
Any mode for C major - the tonal center is C
D-Dorian however, it's the C major scale but it starts on D so wouldn't it be in the key of D still?

Because most of the time that’s how modes are actually used. In 99% of contexts, a “mode” is a temporary situation that exists within the context of a key. Like if you’re learning scale shapes, you learn dorian modes and mixolydian modes, and you use them when the ii chord and V chord are played. A lot of musicians learn how to play over changes this way; this Dm chord means you use D Dorian right now, then we switch to G7 and that means you use G Mixolydian. We’re still in C, we never left C, it’s just a different way of conceptualizing which notes we’re using and their relative importance.

My controversial statement is that most of the time, you aren’t “writing in a mode”. You’re writing in a key, using common chromatic alterations which make certain melodic shapes resemble modes, so you think of them that way. Like typically you are not writing in Phrygian. You are writing in minor, and using the b2 scale degree as a chromatic alteration. If you don’t notice this (or don’t think there’s any difference) it’s because you weren’t ever trying to adequately harmonize those choices. The bII is a dominant function chord and gets a (nondiatonic) minor seventh. “In Phrygian” it would be a major 7th chord, not a dominant 7th chord, using the scale’s tonic note as its seventh rather than the (artificially added) leading tone. Try this sometime. Take a Phrygian riff with a strong b2-1 descending cadence and harmonize it as both bIIMaj7 - i and bII7 - i and see which sounds correct. You’re not writing in Phrygian, you’re in minor using the subV AKA bII.

>do you think Daigo knew frame data?
Even if he didn’t study it by modding SF Alpha and viewing hitboxes or counting startlag frames or whatever, he still KNEW it. He had to know it to do what he did. Maybe he learned it via trial and error rather than research, maybe he didn’t know the jargon that modern players know to discuss it. But he was still playing the same game as everyone else. The frame data was still there, he was playing the same game as everyone else, and he had to be a master of it to play well, regardless of how he came by that knowledge or how he was able to articulate it.
