ESOTERIC PRODUCTION KNOWLEDGE THREAD:fl studio 11 has a distinct sound that no other DAW can replicate

>>131501235post link, i need a good laugh
>>131501251I think it’s a Mr. Bill interview, I’ll have to dig it up. Basically he points out that logic dictates that audio summation and scaling is identical, so it SHOULD follow that only the plugins matter, and that “DAW sound” is really “default plugins sound”, and Mr. Bill agrees. But he says in testing this wasn’t true, and he was frustrated by it, because he has to use lots of different DAWs for specific projects. And he puts it down to PPQ/event resolution defaults. Like working on the Doom soundtracks he had a lot of effects where he would insta-snap volume on a track to zero for an effect, and in Pro Tools this will literally truncate the waveform, pop and all. But other DAWs may force a zero crossing. Or they may pull a pulse-to-pulse fade (e.g. in FL, with its default 96PPQ timebase, the shortest “instant” automation fade might be a 2ms fade out on a 120BPM track). And he suggested that there are actually a lot of these tiny hidden assumptions in how DAWs handle things that are ambiguous, and as he started testing them he found most DAWs don’t handle them the same. Panning, sequential gainstaging, how audio behaves when playback rate is adjusted, automation and MIDI time precision, etc. and a lot of these things could be adjusted IF YOU KNEW, but you usually didn’t know, because you assumed that identical UI elements and values would produce identical results.Basically it’s the argument that DAWs, like plugins, make different raw DSP choices behind seemingly identical parameters and so sometimes have minor differences which make a specific technique in one DAW sound different in a different DAW if you try to recreate it with the same workflow.

The best sounding DAW is SAW Studio. IYKYK
>>131501347in other words, literally nothing.thanks for typing all that though

IDK I thought it was kind of neat, to go full circle from laughing at audiophiles about “summing engine” retardation to actually clocking how DAWs sound different from one another measurably.
>>131501434jaycen joshua talked about using fl studio because his clients wanted the mike will made it sound so i wouldn't call it literally nothing
>>131501434You're making me compelled to chuzo post. But I won't, I still have some decency.
