I bought a box of tapes a while ago that includes stretches of broadcasts from Portland's defunct rock music station 101.1 KUFO. I assume they must be from late 1996 or so. I identified the songs. >>131506702Before the Telecommunications Act of 1996 that allowed Clear Channel to buy up every radio station in America radio was amazing. I remember our local station used to play Front 242's 'Headhunter'. Imagine that, an industrial band just casually on the radio in the middle of the afternoon.
KUFO by the late 2000s was more of a buttrock station that played like Creed and Shinedown lol. They shut it down in 2009. This era was a lot bettert. portlandfag

I’m fortunate enough to have a legit Freeform college station that’s got barely enough of a signal for about half of my drive. The independent station plays Spanglish crap most of the afternoon and country crap in the early evenings, but can play some really cool stuff outside of that. I’d argue the rise of streaming was the bigger culprit in turning commercial FM radio into the pile of garbage it is today.
