MGMT completely pissing away their shot at superstardom out of petulant hipsterism is the single greatest mistake in rock music. In the timeline where they actually meaningfully followed up on the hits from Oracular, everything is better.
>>
>>131518204
Timmy white boys like them can’t make good music it’s really that simple. They ripped off most their music from superior Black and Brown men anyways
>>
>>131518204
i was a hipster dork when that shit came out and I always thought it was shit (besides electric feel, undeniable bar cover band banger), and that put me off of them for years. Listening back now it's just as embarrassing as it was then, but a friend showed me some of their more recent stuff and it's actually not bad at all. For my taste you got it backwards
>>
>>131518286
>For my taste
Which is awful.
>>
>>131518204
they had two good songs which carried them further than they should have
>>
>>131518303
i bet you liked 'young folks' too
>>
>>131518286
lol you were wrong back then aaaaaand wrong now again, amazing feat lmao based millenium hipstard
>>
>>131519122
I bet you make retarded, meaningless assumptions all the fucking time.
>>
>>131519211
well it seems like you got your taste from the radio back then if you liked "Time to Pretend" and "Kids" so it's a fair assumption to make lol. Even the good 00s indie shit was always semi-cringe when compared to 80s/90s. The radio stuff was the worst of the worst, pulling aspects of all this indie bullshit but presented for mass appeal, and that's the stuff you liked. The first MGMT album, Young Folks, Keep the Car Running, all that bullshit was the same class which ultimately led to the whole "stomp clap" shit that everyone's clowning on these days
I'll give you a pass if you're like 20 right now, but if you're in your 30s you should know that shit was never good
>>
>>131519798
Who made you the arbiter of musical quality? Braindead fag.
>>
>>131518204
>Made Electronic music not rock music.
>literally on the radio all the time.
Wtf is this post
>>
>>131518204
There's no such thing as "pissing away their shot at superstardom", they were just not good enough to keep making hits. It is that simple, there are bands and artists that ruin themselves with drugs and what not, but to make a conscious decision to not release hits while being totally completely capable of making them it's a lie. They did not have it in themselves, stop believing that and treat them as the one-hit wonders that they are.
>>
They had good flair for stylistic play and good sense of melody, but they were never good performers.
Which goes against the spirit of rock stardom. You have to be raw and move a crowd through your powerful delivery to be a great rock band. Studio rock bands are wankers.
But these guys were more into indie pop and dabbling with genre crossover than actual rock. For them rock itself was just another ingredient in the recipe
>>
>>131519860
OP is literally insisting an electropop band on a major record label that made very popular radio pop in the late 2000s and worked with other major radio pop musicians is somehow anything other than yet another act that had some hits, and in fact was some kind of rock band. It's just a retarded premise that makes no sense. Bit like asking why underground rocker Chappell Roan hasn't made anither album yet.
>>
>>131519918
wow you are really stupid and bitter
>>
>>131518204
>superstardom
>in the Internet age
Literally not possible.
>>
>>131519952
No. I like MGMT's album Oracular Spectacular. I just don't see them as anything but a fun radio pop band from 2008.
>>
>>131518204
They didn't want to be the "saviors of rock". They kind of mocked the whole idea of that on Time to Pretend directly
>>
>>131520023
ironically they did have a meme hit in the tiktok era (little dark age), so they still had some gas in the tank
>>
>>131520147
I assume they just wanted to make fun bops. Like very simple desire. And they succeeded at it.
>>
>>131518250
is this a bot
>>
>>131519822
remember when I said
>For my taste
and then you said
>Which is awful.

>>131518204
Congratulations was missing something and should have been their third hit. Maybe it was way too spacy, it should've been more pop punk or had orchestras or something just different I dunno. They also need to skin the people who make their mid career music videos alive. They look like pedophiles in these, like the KIDS video which pissed people off and the Congrats with the slowly dying animal these videos killed off like half their fanbase. Their third video about dying was wtf too.

If they weren't literally rescued by some guy (its not even LDA its the slowed and reverb LDA some guy made people like) they would have been a one hit wonder band. And possibly the most hated OHWB of all time.
>>
>>131520226
One of them is literally a Jew who made a movie about Anne Frank. The kid stuff was how he actually feels about Goyim kids.
>>
they were a fucking embarrassment
the kind of band you'd hear on lame liberal talk shows. I don't know anyone who fucked with them.
>>
>>131520791
>don't know anyone who fucked with them.
Probably because you have no friends.
>>
>>131520906
the fuck is this? are you a child? did you get lost in a thread about a band that was already irrelevant before you stopped pissing the bed?
>>
>>131518204
learn more about the music industry and you'll start to understand why one-hit wonders might not be guys who couldn't come up with any more good songs but instead learned that they were being ripped off blind and decided there was no point in making other people rich with their creativity, so they either made shit to get dropped, or just made music that =was mostly just interesting to themselves.
sometimes that produces a Siberian Breaks, but mostly it just produces music you listen to once or twice and forget.

also groups go the less popular route because after their first album makes a splash, rock critics call them commercial (Radiohead) or Kurt Cobain says they're careerist (Pearl Jam).
>>
>>131520791
>I don't know anyone who fucked with them.
must be a zoom zoom. everyone and i mean EVERYONE was bumping electric feeling at parties in college.

So like any band with more than 10m streams on any song?
>>
>>131521208
People literally played kids out their windows. Most NPC music band if you are a millennial of a certain age. Same as the Lumineers.
>>
>>131520791
Lmao zoomer larp detected. Their shit was everywhere in the late 2000s-early 10s
>>
>>131522387
That do do do do dooo do do do doooo is playing in my head as a Kazoo as I read this thread.
>>
>>131518286
They had a handful of bangers off that first album (Kids is NOT one of them, very annoying song). They’ve always been cringe and pretentious imo but after that first album they stopped writing good pop songs so they’re totally useless. I don’t get the appeal of Little Dark Age either
>>
>>131520791
I was in college then and they were massive. Indie Pop and the pre-EDM explosion electronic music totally wiped rap off the map for a few years there. Really disappointing to see it come back and dominate the mid-late 2010s. Hopefully it’s dead for good this time.

Congratulations [Columbia, 2010]
Old enough to know that irony stales on the tongue and dogged enough to notice when the songs peter out before the album is over, I'm less disappointed than the post-graduate pre-adults who were so tickled by the meta-faux hedonism of the Wesleyan duo's debut. After all, this airy prog-psych self-indulgence is merely an elaboration of the back half of that debut--the half I tuned out then but appreciate some now, because, even as self-indulgent elaborations go, the follow-up's a doozy. Last time they pretended they wanted to be frothy, decadent pop-rock stars. This time, with their best new one by far a praisesong for Brian Eno, they reveal that in real life they're wiggy, woolgathering dilettantes. Once they test the depth of the woolgathering market we'll find out whether they wanted to be pop-rock stars more than they knew. Given the tendency of unrecouped production budgets to cut into the royalties generated by one's hedonism, it's probably a good thing Ben Goldwasser's girlfriend is studying dentistry. A more reliable income stream than modeling, you bet. C+

They literally made a music video where they abused an actual kid by scaring him. It was a whole thing.
>>
>>131522747
Except it wasn't and the kid was completely fine. Little kids cry, they don't need to be traumatized into crying. There's even behind the scenes footage you can watch.
>>
>>131518204
No one listens to this shit anymore, and there's a reason why. This kind of indie music required a baseline optimism about the future and generally decent quality of life.

Nowadays everybody is becoming increasingly aware that they are being demographically replaced in their own nation by low impulse control tribal foreigners who do not respect their country and are actively making it worse, so the sounds of quaint indie hipsterism from yesteryear don't exactly seem appropriate for the times.
>>
>>131523064
we have evidence that millions of people are listening to it every month.
>>
>>131523205
>the massive corporate streaming apparatus is clear evidence that the indie scene is alive and well

I listen to MGMT all the time. It's a nice fun treat.

>what do you mean the local indie scenes have all comparatively vanished from what they used to be? I still listen to indie tracks on spotify sometimes!
Woah, that's very cool.

MGMT wasn't indie music. It was played on pop radio. It's old pop music.

Okay so I'm clearly talking with someone who was like 5 at the time.
>>
>>131523341
Are you implying that Kids was not on the radio all the time in 2008? The single was literally on Columbia. If you are on a major label you aren't indie.
