First of all, back then, EVERYONE was an "industry plant," the music you received came through either music videos on cable TV or through the radio, either way, whether it was grunge or rap, "practices shifted" to deliver the product to you. Second, gun-waving rap started showing up in 1992-3, while Billy was just starting to have a career. rock genres like post grunge, nu-metal, post punk/garage revival and indie rock have been big for many years even after '97-'98. The decline of rock in favor of hip hop was a gradual thing, it didn't happen overnight.

MTV was all about boy bands cribs and rappers at that point. The rock stars were getting pushed out in favor of yo raps cribs and cars. Even the award shows at that time all the candidates in the new artist categories were Alicia keys or some hip hop act. But the final nail on rock music was trap and SoundCloud in the 2010s when they took rock fashion dumbed down the music and put a kick over it

My favorite rock album came out in 2003 but it did not have mass appeal. Neither did screamo, hardcore, etc. Bloc Party type music was popular but grew tiresome quickly.

If I ever had the chance to play in a band (lmao, as if), I'd much rather play a small dedicated venue with like 100 people really into the music than play a massive stadium where you can barely make out the faces in the crowd. You should just accept that music is an actual hobby and that necessarily means that a lot of people have barely surface level knowledge at best of it
