The studio albums are unlistenable once you've listened to the live recordings.

I never saw the appeal either. Usually with albums that are considered classics in their respective genres, even if I don't like it I can see why some people do but this is an exception. I don't like the vocal style, that's just an aesthetic preference but if you don't like the vocals thats always a big obstacle to enjoyment. I have a particular problem with the drums, specifically how the snare sounds so separated from the rest of the kit and has this prominent and incessant presence through the whole album, its like the precursor to the gated reverb that ruined 80s drumming. But mostly I find the whole thing dull and boring, its a collection of 3 to 5 minute glumpop songs none of which feel like they really go anywhere. Some are a bit faster and some are a bit slower but ultimately they all kind of blend into one.
It doesn't help that its one of those albums that has a legion of sadboy fans who get upset when they have to face the fact that its not universally loved and admired, and they're just as tedious as the album itself.

That's mostly the producer's doing. Hannett was the real auteur with Joy Division's work, the band themselves pretty much just wanted to play their version of punk.

I tried listening to their stuff recently.
they seem to have started out as the most amateurish musicians imaginable. (how they got a recording contract then, i'll never know ..... guess it was the punk glorifying of amateur period or something)

but towards the end they started getting a little better and you could start hearing some sorta clever ideas.

but still shouldn't have started recording until the new order period when they finally had the skills to write some catchy stuff.
