what's the attraction of this type of music? to me it sounds like mumble-rap, but in rock form
>>131597040there’s a few things to keep in mind when talking about joy division. Ian’s background, mental illness, and his seizures. A working class group that innovated in a sound using what minimal tools they had at their disposal. They made their own distortion pedals, smashed their amps, and took on a very amateur DIY approach.
>>131597058bad example, Unknown Pleasures is produced to hell and back
>>131597098Everyone knows joy division was better live. Their studio work was never the intended way to listen to their music.
>>131597115Why are they still so popular then
>>131597115Cop out answer>>131597040It's for depressed people
>>131597040mumble rap?Did you listen to the album? He's closer to some scott walker or roy orbison type of croonerWhere is the mumbling in songs like Disorder or New Dawn Fades??>>131597115I mean, only the band thought this. The production makes up a large part of what made this band influential, you hear it in everything that follows
>>131597040only one good song: the band
>mumble rapare you an idiot?anyways, ians vocal style descends from guys like jim morrision and frank sinatra, curtis was a big sinatra guy>When we were doing "Love Will Tear Us Apart" there were two records we were into: Frank Sinatra's Greatest Hits and "Number One Song in Heaven" by Sparks.
>>131597537ExactlyI swear people just state "opinions" on music without even listening
>>131597040This is the dumbest post on mew right now. You must be a zoomer.
>>131597040>what's the attraction of this type of music? to me it sounds like mumble-rap, but in rock form>>131597640has this board always been like this?everybody on here should be cleansed with a flamethrower
>>131597115The studio albums are unlistenable once you've listened to the live recordings.
I never saw the appeal either. Usually with albums that are considered classics in their respective genres, even if I don't like it I can see why some people do but this is an exception. I don't like the vocal style, that's just an aesthetic preference but if you don't like the vocals thats always a big obstacle to enjoyment. I have a particular problem with the drums, specifically how the snare sounds so separated from the rest of the kit and has this prominent and incessant presence through the whole album, its like the precursor to the gated reverb that ruined 80s drumming. But mostly I find the whole thing dull and boring, its a collection of 3 to 5 minute glumpop songs none of which feel like they really go anywhere. Some are a bit faster and some are a bit slower but ultimately they all kind of blend into one.It doesn't help that its one of those albums that has a legion of sadboy fans who get upset when they have to face the fact that its not universally loved and admired, and they're just as tedious as the album itself.
>>131597040Specifically with Joy Division it's like 30% Ian Curtis as a tragic figure, 30% the artwork translating well to merch, and 40% Martin Hannett's production basically predicting goth rock.
>>131598186You said a whole bunch of nothing desuTo say it's not admired is completely dishonest given how much it influenced a plethora of other bands to this very day, some of which became pretty big mainstream actsHell it's not even just rock bands influenced by them, rappers like danny brown and vince staples have cited it as an influence at one time
>>131597040Same, a bit too old and musty sounding for me. But I appreciate TF out of the influence it had to gothic rock.
>>131598540I said why I dont like it>dont like the vocals>dont like the drum sound or how theyre used>dont like the unvarying tone>dont like the short, simple song structuresnotice how at no point did I say it was shit or terrible or objectively bad, I said why I dont like italso, I didn't say it wasn't admired, I said that feeling wasn't universal. but>its one of those albums that has a legion of sadboy fans who get upset when they have to face the fact that its not universally loved and admired, and they're just as tedious as the album itselfthats you. not everyone worships your sacred cow. grow the fuck up and stop wetting your panties every time someone doesnt share your exact taste or opinion. its infantile.
>>131598614OP didn't ask why you didn't like it though
>>131597040It sounds cool and is original and stylish in an authentic way
>>131599080That's mostly the producer's doing. Hannett was the real auteur with Joy Division's work, the band themselves pretty much just wanted to play their version of punk.
>>131597115Warsaw demos are quite good
>>131597040listen to it louder
I agree and after hearing Jim E Brown I cant even pretend to take them seriously anymore
>>131601055hes fake as fucknot even that fat
>>131598061Disorder in this is insane
>>131597040I tried listening to their stuff recently.they seem to have started out as the most amateurish musicians imaginable. (how they got a recording contract then, i'll never know ..... guess it was the punk glorifying of amateur period or something)but towards the end they started getting a little better and you could start hearing some sorta clever ideas.but still shouldn't have started recording until the new order period when they finally had the skills to write some catchy stuff.
>>131597040>mumble-rap, but in rock formThat's The Fall
>>131597115The Peel Sessions versions of their songs are much better than the originals
Joy Division is what you listen to if you like sniffing goth girl anuses.
>>131603906Same with The Smiths
>>131603946That's Type O Negative
>>131603955Fair
>>131603946who doesn't though?
>>131603955TON is for actually fucking the goth chicks
>>131603984Anyone who listens to The Beatles
>>131603987that's too spooky for me
>>131604009wasn't yoko a dollar-store version of a goth girl though?
>>131604023No she was just a dollar-store
