The "problem" with it is that it doesn't rock. This album is about as far from rock as Radiohead actually moved, fucking with loops and samples and making music that sounds like that album cover. I like it, but I get why people who like Radiohead don't like it.

In Rainbows burned them out. They doubled down on that album with the intent make something that could stand up to their Bends/OKC/Kid A run. Case in point, it has a disc 2 so we know they completed at least a whopping 18 songs from that session. This album was a cooldown in response, they just wanted to fiddle around with some new toys and make a record at a relaxed pace. Even then, it could be said that they still put it out a little too soon as some of the B-side tracks weren't even finished when they released the album.

The live album rocks, however. From The Basement is my preferred way to revisit these songs because there's so much more energy to them. It brings out the fun and the emotion.

I get liking only those but that is ass backwards logic, especially for Amnesiac. I can at least say King of Limbs is the band at their most relaxed, they really set the paranoia aside on that one. Amnesiac is easily their most claustrophobic album though, that shit sounds like being trapped in a dark so thick you couldn't see your hand in front of your face, despite the fact that just a few feet away they can see you just fine. That album to me is paranoia incarnate.

"Full of" might be overstating it, especially with Kid A. It's kinda hard not to watch the music videos for stuff like Paranoid Android and Knives Out and not see a little bit of that, but I wouldn't overstate it as a selling point.

For instance, the opening track of Amnesiac on its surface is another exploration of the "Fitter Happier" themes but it is written with a clear double meaning to its lyrics. The song is self-deprecating humor acknowledging the disappointment some people felt after waiting three years for a follow-up to OK Computer only to receive something completely different with Kid A. Something minimalist in comparison, as if after years of waiting nothing came. But Thom plays into the pretentious allegations for humor by denying them saying "I'm a reasonable man get off my case" almost like he's telling kids to get off his lawn.
As for Kid A, that's definitely their bleakest record. But "cut the kids in half" is a funny line and "Idioteque" is a funny title.
As for the album in this thread, Morning Mr. Magpie on its surface is practically a Monty Python sketch where a bird flies into Thom's room and distracts him long enough for him to forget the totally awesome idea for a song he just had.
Fake Plastic Trees is an existential critique of boob jobs. I think how much humor you see in Radioehead's music comes down to how seriously you think Thom takes himself. I think Thom is taking the piss when he says "an interstellar burst and I'm back to save the universe" but I've met many people who say he's some obnoxious egotist. In fact Kid A is the album I've heard multiple people IRL point to as proof that Thom thinks he's holoer-than-thou when that album to me is proof that Thom thinks too little of himself and is worried about being taken too seriously by people which he expertly describes on the not funny at all How To Disappear Completely but I guess other people just have a totally different impression of the guy.
Like, Creep is their biggest song. There, There is like a remake and deconstruction of Creep told from the perspective of the creep's friend patting him on the back and telling him to get over it. There's something darkly funny and self-deprecating in that.
