The first two dissection albums basically sound the same. This is lame proto Gothen(((berg))) melodeth. You can thank these two albums for all the worst Redditor melodeath trends. I would also argue these barely even qualify as black metal. I think I remember black metal pioneer Euronymous made a comment about how sacramentum was weak and that band is practically indistinguishable from dissection. He is correct. The production is way too clean and overdone. These albums are not heavy sounding in the slightest. A light thrash band like anthrax sounds heavier. They do not even sound evil either. There is no scary sound of Darkthrone or mayhem here. The third album was so bad I’m pretty sure it caused Jon to kill him self because everyone hated it so much. What about Jon himself? He was most likely a homosexual that’s why a gay man was following him and Faust because they were at a gay bar and they had to kill this man because he was a witness to their gayness.

I like Dissection, I think the songwriting was really strong on that album. However, I do recognize some validity to black metal fans' dismissal, because it was so conventional compared to the rest of the genre. Euronymous thought every black metal band needed to sound completely different and unique, and that ethic is what makes early black metal so strong. Mayhem, Thorns, Enslaved, Satyricon, Emperor, Immortal, Darkthrone, Burzum, Carpathian Forest, bands outside of Norway like Sigh, and first wave bands like Celtic Frost, Bathory, Von, etc. all sound completely different from each other, and that's why their music is still so valuable. Dissection's actual music has a feel that's almost closer to the most conventional melodeath bands like In Flames, than other black metal bands. I also think Storm of the Light's Bane is the only great Dissection album, and I actually find Dissection's third/last album really boring and lame.The black metal bands' focus on experimentation and uniqueness was in part a rejection of how samey death metal had become. It's unfortunate that now so much atmospheric black metal is completely indistinguishable from other bands now.
