The compositions in a lot of musicals seems to be pulling from influences that are like, so separate from the canons that have defined my taste, so during Hadestown I often felt like what I was seeing/hearing was like 70% brand new shit. I'm really trying to extend myself for it but I did get somewhere.I feel like these are probably considered shit by musical fans but I actually really love the OG Willy Wonka movie (although I don't know if that really counts) and Grease. I'm a sucker for really pretty romantic sounding stuff so I think the more beautiful the better for me, as opposed to maybe something darker. I do really like how animated the compositions can feel, the kinetic synchronization stuff is really fun for me.

It's a crazy accomplishment not just as a composition, but as a production piece, for something of that magnitude to be accomplished that way, like he was some EDM guy making beats on his laptop except he made a 2.5 hour narrative saga instead.

>>131624914I just realized that this Gigi animatic has the OG recording (the first 2 EPs got re-recorded due to a record label dispute, EPs 3-7 he recorded and edited himself in a home studio but the first 2 were done with professional assistance, he went back and re-recorded them by himself to keep the masters). If you were to go on a Spotify playlist to listen, or watch a more recent "the movie cut" of all songs, that song would sound slightly different (also, be sure to do an official playlist rather than chronological order if you listen, because EPs 1 and 2 are out of order chronologically due to being re-recorded and the original masters being taken down).I like most of the instrumentation and editing on the OG recordings more, but damn do the ensemble vocals sound exponentially better in the new recordings, it's so jarring listen to that out of tune crowd wash rather than a nice clean harmony.
