1972's chart starts now! Also after this one, I'm thinking we take a short break from the revised '70s charts, and instead start the 2000s. But I'll leave that up to everyone else ITT.

started off with the weakest song of the whole lot, what a lifeless tune. thankfully, there's nothing else as subpar as that, and as it goes on the album does get considerably better. that is until the last two songs then it dips in quality again, they really should've just cut it at track #9.

if you ask me, the title track, takin' it back and especially scandinavian eyes (that song seriously brings to mind wings of tomorrow-era europe) are the best here.

rolling thunder, the lowland hundred, seven nights the fucking wizardry song; all great, the metal here is consistently fantastic and i have no issues with it. what i do have an issue with is the rather pointless interlude(?) after seven nights, that both doesn't add anything and goes on too long. if it was meant to be an interlude, werdna already fulfills that purpose and much better at that; and if it was just meant to be a standalone thing then it's a total swing and a miss. other than that, great album.

i think what they're trying to do is maintain consistency with their other (laughably bad) album covers. i don't like how the band is going about it though, it's too overtly shitpost-y. like you look at picrel and sure, that's a goofy as hell cover too and it might've been chosen for shits and giggles, but i could still see them back in 1985 actually looking at this and genuinely liking it. that new one, not so much it's clearly a gag.

>>131686751
it was a good album, yeah. my only complaints were that i just wish there was more speedy sections, too much of the music hovers in mid-paced territory and it made a few songs towards the beginning blend together. and that ending ambient thing wasn't a satisfying way to conclude it all.
>The vocalist of the second album is much better
really? personally i thought this guy was alright, maybe could've done with less FX added to his vocals. does the next album's singer have that too?

it was a long battle for me but it was worth it. getting through the production/mixing is like having to no-sell a battering ram, just way too loud and blunt for this kind of music. Mark's solos on this album are some of his best ever though and the rhythm section rules
>i think what they're trying to do is maintain consistency with their other (laughably bad) album covers.
from what I read from Neudi who played with Masters of Disguise and incidentally went on to play with MR, Chris Logue had to be pressed hard to keep consistency with the early stuff, for example the entire band wanted to keep Knutson (the cop) as a mascot character but Logue was ambivalent and even somewhat opposed it

>>
>>131691290
>for example the entire band wanted to keep Knutson (the cop) as a mascot character but Logue was ambivalent and even somewhat opposed it
as i'm typing this post i've been thinking about whether he would've worked as a mascot or not... and i don't know. the only thing that really sticks out to me as a defining feature is the mustache, that's it. he doesn't scream "mascot" to me in the same way the dude from sodom or eddie does.
>it was not supposed to release as a Manilla Road album in the first place. they recorded it as the debut Shark Project album and changed their mind later
i'm not surprised, and that explains the harsher overall sound. in megalodon i even heard some riffing that sounded like early BM, and shelton's vocals are MUCH harsher than all of the other MR albums i've listened to.
>>
>>131691397
yeah, that's the plan. i'm thinking we shouldn't do any other charts in december (excluding any potential spillover from november) than that, let it go until the 31st.

and also, i'd say so far this is a better year for trad than 2025 was. like from what i listened to, last year wasn't bad, but i also wasn't over the moon with any of the releases i checked out, and there's a few albums that have come out this year that i firmly believe are going to enter my regular rotation. like that album by the scepter was fucking incredible, and so was ultima batalla's debut. that album by thy legacy, the call, is also starting to really grow on me too.

>>131668056
big improvement over the debut. riffs, production, songwriting, vocals (especially so, this guy runs circles around the dude on the S/T) - it's a massive step up in quality across the board. and yeah, the vocals still have effects added in post, but i don't think it detracts from this like it did on their debut, because whereas that album was trying to be raw, sort of doom-y, the production on this album is a lot more polished, and there's also more focus on melody to boot.

>as i'm typing this post i've been thinking about whether he would've worked as a mascot or not... and i don't know

>>
>>131692183
>nope, but i have been meaning to. i'm slowly making my way through the 00s stuff.
ah, alrught. well, Voyager was IMO the last time they released a really good album, as opposed to a flawed but interesting album. Mark had a clear vision for how the music progressed on a song-by-song basis and how it should be presented sonically, which is something that went missing on later projects. and the stuff you may have heard about the album having "death metal interludes" is only half-joking, it's definitely one of the harshest trad albums out there. very unique
>>
I enjoy creating a guide for this general by picking the greatest trad albums, but I think the real treasure lies in compiling lists of underappreciated records from their periods.
>>
>>131692296
yeah, I've gotten tons of killer recs from these threads.

>and the stuff you may have heard about the album having "death metal interludes" is only half-joking, it's definitely one of the harshest trad albums out there.
that's actually why i'm more interested in checking out voyager than gates of fire. i already think that manilla road is one of the harsher trad bands in general, and that when the stars align (all of the aspects are on-point like songwriting, riffs etc.) they're actually better the harsher their sound is.

>>
>>131692524
hmm, I like their transitional albums the most, but to me they're the best band in trad with the most unfulfilled potential, I mean they actually delivered, but I'd like if they released 1-2 more albums for each of their styles, or even EPs. and I keep saying this but it's a real pity they hardly explored their doom side.

this was both my first manilla road album and one of the first metal albums i ever listened to in full. it was a horrible introduction to the band and i have not listened to it since. but there's a lot of albums i initially didn't care for/disliked that i've since come around to, so i'm gonna see if my opinion has changed on this.
>>
>>131692907
>and I keep saying this but it's a real pity they hardly explored their doom side.
i can't recall a full-on doom metal song in their discography until atlantis rising. there's elements of it here and there throughout crystal logic (and i stand by that if the riddle master had heavier guitars it could suitably pass for doom) but not much else comes to mind.
>>
>>131694152
the vocals are a sore spot on this one but I think their pre-Crystal Logic stuff is underrated, especially Metal
>>131694215
yeah, that's what I'm getting at. they had stuff bordering on doom early in their career (Mark of the beast/Dreams of Eschaton has more of those songs) but they never committed to it until Spiral Castle and that was a one-off exception. I think a vault release of their 90s material could be really interesting since the SC songs were pooled from that period.
>>
>>131694344
so i'm on centurian war games now, and unless this album takes a catastrophic downturn i'd actually say this is about on par with the deluge. i'm especially getting a big kick out of how unapologetically wank-y the guitarwork is. the riffing in cat and mouse and street jammer is sick.
>I think a vault release of their 90s material could be really interesting since the SC songs were pooled from that period.
really? i remember hearing about how atlantis rising had leftover 90s material but i didn't know spiral castle did, too.
>>
>>131694412
yeah, I think Spiral Castle was all or at least majority archival material brought up to scratch (except the outro which, btw, features Mark's mom on violin). Atlantis Rising might have a riff or two pulled from the archives but it was written as a concept album for a debuting band so I doubt they'd want to rely on old stuff, plus it's a very cohesive sounding record. Gates of Fire was definitely all-new, and I don't remember hearing anything about them using any old songs on Voyager or Playground of the Damned either.
>>
this might just be my new favorite manilla road song. if not the best, definitely a top contender. holy shit the segment from around 11:00 to the end of the track is pure magic.

absolute killer album, filled with surprises and nods to old classics (just wait for When Giants Fall...) and Rome is one of the best MR songs ever
>>
>>131694729
i'm on the fall of illiam atm. my first impressions are that the lyrics (something i usually pay little to no attention to) are fantastic, told the story for the first half exponentially well (and continue to do so with story #2) and the guitarwork is master-class, particularly the solos. this album's sound is also almost like mystification or the court's of chaos but brought from the 1987 or 1990 to 2005. it's familiar, but still distinctly its own thing.

also the chorus to this song is heavenly. whole song is, but that chorus and the extended solo in the middle are incredible.
>and Rome is one of the best MR songs ever
IT GETS BETTER??? dude this tune is already top #5 of the entire band's catalogue imo, how could it get better than this
>>
>>131694830
you're right on the money to bring up Mystification, this impression will only magnify with the next album, which feels like an attempt to create a modern conceptually distinct, musically direct sequel to that album
>IT GETS BETTER??? dude this tune is already top #5 of the entire band's catalogue imo, how could it get better than this
NEVER underestimate the Shark lol. but honestly speaking, Gates came out only a couple years before the band lost their second sail, and kind of tapered off into being reliably good, so let's make the most of it while it lasts
>>
>>131694888
>NEVER underestimate the Shark lol.
i see what you mean, i'm on rome now and this is one of the most badass riffs i've ever heard. like it's up there with stargazer. and you know this is also something i've noticed about the album, but ESPECIALLY this aeneid story: every song's instrumentation not only works with the lyrics to paint its imagery in your mind but the music itself, isolated of the words being sung conveys it almost as well.

and while i was writing this i got hit with the solo, and yeah, yeah this is one of my new favorite manilla songs. might even have already taken the top spot from the empire LOL, i fear that the final side of the record is going to come off as a letdown by comparison.

>and you know this is also something i've noticed about the album, but ESPECIALLY this aeneid story: every song's instrumentation not only works with the lyrics to paint its imagery in your mind but the music itself, isolated of the words being sung conveys it almost as well.
this album was the first time Mark's prepared all-new material for an MR album since the Courts of Chaos, he'd specially upgraded his studio to handle this project - it was a true labor of love to prove he's still got it. you could call it a make it or break it deal for the band, I guess, since he could've just kicked back and fed samey releases to his newly grown cult. you know, I remember following the updates on his old site, there was this feeling like it's going to be great or maybe end the band.
>i fear that the final side of the record is going to come off as a letdown by comparison.
I remember when we talked about this album ages ago, I recommended to treat it like a set of EPs. I think you'll see why in the last third. it's exhaustive but also more fragmented than the other trilogies. the quality is absolutely still there though.

i see. well i'd say that he succeeded with flying colors, because i actually think this is better than everything from the '80s. mystification is CLOSE, REALLY CLOSE in quality, but there's just one more 9/10 than here and the songwriting across the board on this record has impressed me so much that the disparity only widened for me. seriously, i've listened to a ton of albums and it is very, very rare for something to impress me on all fronts as much as this album does.

>*maybe end the band financially. Mark invested a lot into this production.
i'm not surprised. this is probably their best album if i'm talking the production and just how fucking ambitious it is.
>I remember when we talked about this album ages ago, I recommended to treat it like a set of EPs. I think you'll see why in the last third. it's exhaustive but also more fragmented than the other trilogies. the quality is absolutely still there though.
so i was listening to it as one block, and ranked it as such to; but while listening to it i was generally viewing it like three separate stories. so, essentially three separate EPs. it helps that the only motif that really stays consistent through each side is the focus on conflict and each story being set in ancient times. and even though behind the veil is the lowest song here (really not saying much), it's really only a 9 because it just does not stack up musically to the rest of the album, which i had zero issues tacking a 10/10 next to each fucking song.

(also i had a feeling you were the same poster, i'm remembering how our last conversation about manilla road went, and how many posts it spanned lol)

We are the first generation to grow up with this song as a staple of Crystal Logic.

lol, I just came back after months away from the site and I was getting deja vu all evening since we somehow managed to repeat that convo almost word for word up to a point. in any case, I'm curious how Voyager will impress you. I suspect you won't rate it as high as Gates of Fire, since those albums are polar in some crucial respects, but it'll be interesting to see your reaction to the more brutal epics on that album, and its conceptual flow compared to Gates.

damn, i don't hate feeling free again (actually quite like it) but i wish flaming metal systems took its place on the original release. on par with the title track and necropolis and would've fit right at home.
>lol, I just came back after months away from the site and I was getting deja vu all evening since we somehow managed to repeat that convo almost word for word up to a point.
dude, ditto. i was asking myself "is this the same guy that i talked about manilla with a while ago?" because i just kept remembering that conversation and endlessly comparing it with how our current one was going :p

only one way to find out, and i'm making that my final album of the night. i want to hear a more brutal manilla road.

they wanted to do this! it's the producer's fault. he pulled Flaming Metal Systems off the album to make room for his pet song. I actually like Feeling Free Again, but come on!
>dude, ditto. i was asking myself "is this the same guy that i talked about manilla with a while ago?"
lol, if you say "Manilla Road" 3 times in front of a mirror, the next poster who replies is me

ok, I was about to catch some shut-eye, but let's do this.
>>
let's get this started by killing a rumor: Hellroadie couldn't participate in the sessions cause he'd had a kid and he took another job to pay for the necessities, there was no beef between him and Mark which is something you might have heard

>they wanted to do this! it's the producer's fault. he pulled Flaming Metal Systems off the album to make room for his pet song. I actually like Feeling Free Again, but come on!
laaaame. i assume it was for commercial reasons? or was the producer just that infatuated with the song?
>ok, I was about to catch some shut-eye, but let's do this.
finishing up tomb of the serpent king / butchers of the sea as i type this. great song but you were not kidding about this album being harsh, some of mark's vocals sound like they'd belong on an OSDM record. i'm also noticing how cavernous the guitars are, they don't have the razor sharp clarity that gates of fire has, more along the lines of spiral castle but deeper.
>there was no beef between him and Mark which is something you might have heard
i've not heard about that but i'll keep a mental note of it.
>>
>>131695540
>laaaame. i assume it was for commercial reasons? or was the producer just that infatuated with the song?
the producer wanted the band to make room for something radio friendly and then they wrote Feeling Free Again is what I understand happened

yeah, this album goes some places Gates didn't, I'm 50/50 on whether Mark wanted a unified tone to cover all the bases or if he was just having fun just going all out. one of the songs here (Return of the Serpent King) is dedicated to Piggy from Voivod, who was famous for unconventional guitar tones
>>
Tree is Life is hardly a Behind the Veil, right? when the arrangement fills in it becomes surprisingly heavy and spacious.

>the producer wanted the band to make room for something radio friendly and then they wrote Feeling Free Again is what I understand happened
i suppose it makes sense but i still don't like it. radio friendly and manilla road shouldn't be in the same sentence.
>one of the songs here (Return of the Serpent King) is dedicated to Piggy from Voivod, who was famous for unconventional guitar tones
if he played on the late 80s voivod albums (the stuff i've actually listened to) then those have some of the wackiest, most bizarre tones that i've ever come across. like the guitars in killing technology (the album, not just the song) are so uniquely fucked, in a good way.
>Tree is Life is hardly a Behind the Veil, right?
oh tree of life runs circles around behind the veil. that was a great ballad, love the way it progressed. frost and fire was a kickass song too, very heavy riffing. so far i'm liking it a lot but i wouldn't put it on par with gates... yet, it may change.

yeah, Piggy died in 2005. he constructed their tonality
>so far i'm liking it a lot but i wouldn't put it on par with gates... yet, it may change.
we're getting there. Blood Eagle is an example of why I mentioned Mystification is the key to this album, the riff construction draws a lot from that one but in a modernized, less shredding manner. the album is starting to open up at this point

>Blood Eagle is an example of why I mentioned Mystification is the key to this album, the riff construction draws a lot from that one but in a modernized, less shredding manner.
i concur, there's plenty of riffs here that have been reminding me a lot of mystification. blood eagle's opening riff specifically brought to mind valley of unrest, they're built pretty similarly, at least to my ears.

btw, here's the rank so far. on paper, same as gates but whereas i thought that secured a 10/10 because behind the veil works wonderfully in the context of the first side, this one is a definite 99/100 so far. i think serpent king / butchers just took a bit too long to get going. but other than that, the material here is just about as good as what i heard on gates. mostly, there's nothing here that is as good as illiam and rome.

one thing about the albums with Cory Christner is the guy dictated how the drums should sound: like a typewriter. this eventually got him fired btw

I think you're going to have a headache adjusting those, IMO the second half of the album (beginning with the title track) crushes the first

the title track is easily the best song so far, yes. the other 10s are lower on the spectrum, but voyager's up there. eye of the storm i have no idea if it's just meant to be an instrumental interlude to conquest or not so i'll hold my tongue on that one.
>>
>>131695709
>>131695724
but, to add, there is definitely no individual song here as good as Rome or The Fall of Iliam. this is more of a grower on the basis of being a strong song-cycle, and it takes a couple spins to see that

okay, we're on the part where Return of the Serpent King opens up. this is the good shit. wild expanding riffing that builds and builds
>>

yup, best song so far. there's no mind-blowing soloing like on what was on gates, but the riff, the riff, dude. it's fucking menacing. so is the opening to conquest, too.

none of these songs were written with any compromises in mind, which made it hard for me to wrap my head around the album at first, since they can be so disparate in style that some just stick out on the first listen... but after a couple spins it works in its favor

i just finished the album, and yeah, i think this is one that's gonna take more spins to truly unravel. even with some of the 10s i felt like after i was done listening that i didn't truly "get" the song, even if i really liked it. but make no mistake, this is a great fucking album. right now i'd put it on par with spiral castle or CL. and for fun, here's what my current MR rank would look like:

Gates of Fire>Mystification>The Courts of Chaos>Spiral Castle>Crystal Logic>Voyager?>Atlantis Rising>Mark of the Beast>Open the Gates>The Deluge>Out of the Abyss>Invasion>Metal (weakest classic album imo)

>I think the lack of immediately pleasing elements also works the album's favor by giving it a kind of unapproachability that fits in with the rest of its elements
ditto. any album that demands repeat listening in order to understand all that it's trying to do has my respect lol.

saw iron maiden last night. shit was so cash. best show i've seen from them, best show i've seen in years in fact. all 80s setlist which was a fucking dream. i know they've done that many times before but it's the first time i've seen it. bruce sounds great. a little too great in fact. he obviously doesn't lip sync but i was starting to think he was getting help somehow. then again he was starting to sound gassed near the end so maybe it is all real. insane he can still move like he does at his age.

all i have are really shitty android pics. last night made me realize how shitty android cameras really are. guy next to me had an iphone and when he was zooming in it was still very clear vs. my blurry dogshit. anyway if you haven't seen them, fucking see them. very affordable tickets compared to bands like metallica.

yeah, I had very similar impressions my first time listening to Voyager. it's a purposely obtuse and inaccessible album, not just in its bludgeoning sound design but in how it's conceptually this kind of a mocking mirror of their older approaches - if I had to describe it in a word it would be "warped", it relies on the listener recognizing the stylistic references from MR's older LPs that are being deformed. I think Mark had a lot of fun here making the least beginner-friendly MR album, while continuing and expanding on his song-cycle approach from the trilogies of Gates of Fire.

goddamn, I can't rank their albums at all lol.
>Metal (weakest classic album imo)
Mark hated this one, but he was fucking wrong! it's a rewarding album. try listening to it back to back with Stained Class

>if I had to describe it in a word it would be "warped", it relies on the listener recognizing the stylistic references from MR's older LPs that are being deformed.
pretty apt description i'd say. a lot of the album to me felt like a sort of bizarro version of mystification (and out of the abyss, to a lesser extent. mainly vocals.)
>Mark hated this one, but he was fucking wrong!
hated it? wow, i don't love it but i still think it's a good record. defender, queen of the black coast, cage of mirrors, the souped up version of far side of the sun... hell, the weakest song for me is still just okay.
>it's a rewarding album. try listening to it back to back with Stained Class
i'm a bit tired right now but i also want to blast some more so i'll probably do that. been a while since i listened to metal, anyway. and with that re-listen of invasion... might be a good time.

>hated it? wow, i don't love it but i still think it's a good record.
Mark all but disowned the pre-CL stuff despite including some of the songs in setlists due to fan demand. he was one of the guys who always say their latest work is the best and actually believe it

>Mark all but disowned the pre-CL stuff despite including some of the songs in setlists due to fan demand.
damn. i get why, the first couple albums aren't exactly like what MR would do in their prime (i still think invasion hardly resembles manilla road at all outside of the bookending tracks) but they're still good albums. did he even disown mark of the beast?
>tell me all about it man, I'm running a fever from a bad sinus infection and I'm a week away from my appointment
jesus, and i'm over here just tired from doing shit this afternoon. hope that goes well for ya man.
>Enter the Warrior is also a nice way to open the album, an insistent riff with emphasis on militaristic drumming. this came out two months after Battle Hymns!
if you've ever listened to the granmax song mistress of eternity, that's all i hear when i listen to enter the warrior lol. the riff itself is already a pretty similar, proto-USPM gallop but the raw production on both of the corresponding albums seals it for me.

oh yeah and my thoughts on this album are the exact same as they were previously. enter the warrior's a great opener, defender is some good priest-style metal but is just too short to really make an impression, and queen of the black coast and metal (though i like this one more than i did before, might squeak by with a low 10 actually) are sick.
>>
well this one's a surprise. used to be lukewarm on this but i actually like this one a lot now. nice, driving style riff like highway star or paranoid and has a pretty nice melodic bridge. mark's vocals are also pretty badass on this one, dude sounds like a goblin even more than he does on the rest of the album.
