If you want to hear a pretentious asshole complain for 40 minutes about people having long hair and doing drugs while he looks like bigfoot and smoked 30 packs a day, this is the album for you.
Zappa was a great composer but holy fuck he could not let himself just make good music and had to put his retarded annoying satire over it

this album is a masterpiece. unironically one of the best 60s albums easily

Can you post a song from it you like?
>>
A lot of his criticism of hippies was valid and applies to modern cultures with similar ideals. There was a ton of phony talk about revolutions and peace and love that came from people who just wanted to get high and fuck sluts.

This is one is pretty nice for the most parts, sounds very dreamy. The spoken word parts are annoying though.
>Mom & Dad
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKNG8R6tb0A
This is pretty good too, better than the first one and consistently enjoyable
>What's The Ugliest Part Of Your Body?

This sounds really bad, just a parody of Doo Wop with a dumb singing style
>Let's Make The Water Turn Black

This one is okay, don't feel strongly about it, but don't like his voice on this one too

Just kind of annoying to listen to

Pretty meh overall

You are not a music fan.
>>
>>131673410
You don't actually enjoy their music, you just enjoy the fact that they're "clever" for parodying 60s counterculture.
>>
>>131673391
Those are fair takes but I think your problem is that you have a very particular idea of what popular music should sound like and zappa unapologeticly subverts your expectations with his song writing ingenuity. On a shallow surface level approach sure I could see why someone could view his music as bad but if you actually get into it and engage with his art on a serious level he is one of the best of all time and a true original
>>
>>131673446
Nope. I understand music scenes and their subcultures far better than you ever will. The 1960s had a wide range of idealists, degenerates, conmen, and normies. Frank Zappa comments on all that shit.

I'm conflicted on this era, there's some really great versions of songs like Call Any Vegetable (this version is my favourite zappa song) and King Kong but all this silly comedy rock shit like the 30 minute long Billy The Mountain its ridiculous. who is listening to that shit.

Chunga's Revenge
Little House I Used To Live In
King Kong
Call Any Vegetable
Willie The Pimp
Peaches En Regalia
Concentration Moon
Mom and Dad
Wonderful Wino
just listen to the performances of these songs from this tour and forget everything else
oh yeah and when they would sing i wanna hold your hand & happy together

At its core theres a really good version of The Mothers which excel at extensive jams and capitalising on the success of blues rock but its dampered by frank being a fagtard

He said he had Big Mama Thorton's "Hound Dog" back then which he probably didn't because those records were only sold for the most part in black neighborhoods and were not usually found on shelves amid all the Como and Doris Day crap.

the crown jewel of Zappas early dada era is Absolutely Free.

The music on it is mindblowing and the postmodernist/satirical elements really come together.

that single was a big seller what are you on about

it mustve driven zappa insane that lennon was exactly the kind of person who loved spork shit like this
>>
What I don't get is what he had admiration for "the freak scene" in LA, who were the progenitors of hippies, but then hated hippies?
>>
>>131673247
>There was a ton of phony talk about revolutions and peace and love that came from people who just wanted to get high and fuck sluts.
this is such a naive take. all those things can be true. getting high and fucking sluts is great, and has the advantage of being easy. you can do that while you also want world peace but what can an individual do to bring about world peace? you can vote according to your conscience and speak up a bit, but thats about it. your voice carries more weight when youre part of a larger group all saying the same thing but the hippys were never numerous enough to outnumber and outvote the small c conservative masses
>>
>>131678476
>le voting makes poltiical and social change!
People in the 60s were far more advanced than what passes for politics nowadays. It was an era of general strikes and mass protest
>>

>If you want to hear a pretentious asshole complain for 40 minutes about people having long hair and doing drugs while he looks like bigfoot and smoked 30 packs a day, this is the album for you.
Ok thanks amazing album
>>
>>131678487
>le voting makes poltiical and social change!
yeah. in a democracy, it really does, or at least it could. youre just mindbroken into thinking it doesn't because youre not considering options beyond the tiny club of mostly-all-the-same parties that have been sharing power for generations in whatever first world country you live in. but if enough people had the courage to vote for something genuinely different, we WOULD get real change.
>>
>>131678504
Uh huh, and why do you think that hasn't happened yet? Because people aren't brave enough? Or is it because the system of "democracy" is corrupt, owned and controlled by the top 1% who make politicians pass laws that are in their interest?

If voting could actually change anything, they wouldn't allow you to do it.
>>
>>131678450
I don't think so, Zappa didn't hate Lennon although he was disappointed in him for collecting royalties for a song they had jammed together.
>>
>>131672104
The only reason 4chan hates Zappa is that he reminds them too much of themselves. Prove me wrong.
>>
>>131678522
>Because people aren't brave enough
this. the vast majority have always voted according to either their own parochial concerns, or along lines dictated by their general feelings of allegiance rather than any consideration of actual policy, its moral/philosophical foundation, or its effects
>the system of "democracy" is corrupt, owned and controlled by the top 1% who make politicians pass laws that are in their interest
of course that happens, but if theres a massive groundswell of public opinion it cant be stopped. in most first world countries there are enough safeguards, checks and balances that if, say, 60% of the population went out next election day and voted for a small party outside the political mainstream, that party would be put in power.
the vast majority of western political corruption is about people trying to ensure that the "right" party out of the existing tiny club gets in power. its about redrawing constituency borders, making it more difficult or easier for appropriate groups to vote, that kind of thing. its not generally about restricting mass social political movements, because those dont really exist any more in developed countries. and they dont exist because
>people arent brave enough
>>
>>131678576
You're not dealing with reality and you're living in fucking fairy land.
> its not generally about restricting mass social political movements
It absolutely is, why do you think those movements have declined or become captured and commodified by "safe" political channels. Or today, lead to neo-fascist "law and order" campaigns? You are so far out of your depth.
>>
>>131678537
That's correct and also exactly why he sucks.
>>
>>131678608
>why do you think those movements have declined
because
>people arent brave enough
show me that there are the necessary TENS OF MILLIONS of people ready to vote for something truly unconventional and maybe Ill take your increasingly childish and personally directed ranting seriously
those people dont exist. they literally only care about their mortgage rate and how much it costs to fill up the car. big changes only come when people feel that their own lives are threatened with unwanted major change or serious instability. they dont vote for the status quo because theyre manoeuvred into it by conspiracy and coercion, they vote that way because theyre lazy, stupid and greedy.

We're Only in It for the Money [Rykodisc, 1995]
Whatever his ultimate standing as social critic or present-day composer who refuses to die, Zappa was everything he claimed to be on this 19-cut, 40-minute sendup of the Summer of Love. No, it wasn't like this; most of the naive teens who lost-and-found themselves in the Haight were sweeter and smarter than the "phony hippies" he lacerates with such hopeless contempt. But that doesn't mean his cruelty isn't good for laughs. And not only is every wee tune--motive, as composers say--as well-crafted as a Coke commercial, they all mesh together into one of those musical wholes you've read about. With bohemia permanent and changed utterly, this early attack on its massification hasn't so much dated as found its context. Cheap sarcasm is forever. A

?
not an argument. not even a sentence. I dont know what youre trying to say.
>>131678672
all current political elites have to do is try to nudge election results in their desired direction the few percentage points needed to get them elected in first-past-the-post systems. dont pretend that theyre somehow committed to keeping populations suppressed for the long term when all they want is power and money for themselves, now. they want to make their bag, they dont give a fuck what the fallout is in 30 or 50 years. why would those people put huge effort and resources into a conspiracies that purely maintain the status quo when that system has a 50% chance of returning their immediate alternatives in the ever-so-slightly-different opposition party at the next election? its nonsense. they put that effort into getting THEMSELVES elected because thats where the power and money is.
>>
>>131678740
You are literally describing all of the pitfalls of the parliamentary system and then saying it's a good thing. Here's a little nugget for you, people aren't lazy, stupid or greedy by design, the system inculcates them into those beliefs and when it starts to break down and people actually resist then you'll get the police and the army sent onto you. Many such cases!
>>
>>131678759
Im not saying its a good thing at all. Im saying its inherent flaws can be overcome if the will exists. we just differ on the reasons that will doesnt exist. this really isnt going anywhere is it. I think people are stupid lazy and greedy because thats how human nature manifests in massive population we didnt evolve to live in, you think people vote as if theyre stupid lazy and greedy because theyre coerced into doing so by a cabal of elites. nothing youve said so far has changed my opinion and Im sure the reverse is true.
>>
>>131678784
>The will, the heckin will!
>you think people vote as if theyre stupid lazy and greedy
No that's what you said, and it's a contradiction, if you believe that's human nature then where does the will come from? It's certainly not an impassioned plea, it's about their conditions iwithering away and them being organsied into something substantial that can actually hurt the rulers. And yes, the ruling class conspires to make sure the future of their system survives, this has actually been proven you can look at the Epstein files, this is recent fucking news. You're just a fairy land idealist.
>>
>>131678806
a fairy land idealist who thinks that society is doomed because most people are inherently kind of selfish and thoughtless and fundamentally just want a quiet and reasonably comfortable life and ultimately don't care if people they will never meet or hear about have much less quiet and comfortable lives.
okay then
>>
>>131678827
Actually think about what you said. You say "society is doomed" because too many people want a quiet comfortable life and don't give a fuck about other people. Are you saying this is a good thing?
>>
>>131678841
no, Im saying its really bad
>>
>>131678846
Then don't fucking argue the merits of this shit system
>>
We should have gotten a serious Zappa and Lennon collab album without Yoko Ono. It's not fair.
>>
>>131678850
learn to read. Im saying the primary reason the system gives shit results is because the people voting in it are too often selfish and thoughtless.
>>
>>131678866
Because they are convinced to vote for selfish and thoughtless parties that own the entire system and control the limits of debate.
>>
>>131678883
yeah youre just saying the same things over and over again and getting angry when I don't agree with you. but you can get as angry as you like, unless you have convincing arguments it wont do any good.
>>
>>131678888
You're the one that's angry. We both agree the system is shit, you just hate people and think they deserve it.
>>
>>131678902
>You're the one that's angry
I certainly haven't spoken angrily to you, I dont think Ive even used any bad language. I just happen to disagree with you.
nor do I hate people, or at least not most of them. people cant help who they are, and I kind of understand them. when I was young I was more radical, and I thought it was bullshit how people said, ah, youll get more conservative as you get older, because it wasn't happening to me. but then I had two kids, and while I used to think yeah, give me a real alternative and I'll vote for it and if it makes my life harder, fuck it, I dont care, Ill survive and itll be worth it. but now if I had that same choice and it would make my kids lives harder, would I still vote for it? idk, Im not so sure.
