Four guys from New York decided the problem with rock and roll was it needed more fire breathing and blood spitting, and in 1973 when everyone was listening to Led Zeppelin chase the blues into the cosmos or the Beatles dismantle themselves beautifully, Kiss showed up painted like demons and decided the music was only half the point. They were outside everything that mattered and laughed out of every room that counted and were never supposed to last and then they sold out Madison Square Garden and wrote songs so simple they felt inevitable and built a merchandising empire before anyone understood what that meant and put on a show so fully committed it pulled in people who had never cared about rock and roll before and suddenly did. Critics dismissed them and audiences could not stop buying tickets, which is usually how you know someone figured something out. Fifty years later they are still a going concern which is not something most of their contemporaries can say, and the reason is the same as it was in 1973, they understood that spectacle and song are not opposites, they are the same thing delivered in different keys.

Until Alive broke them they were subsisting on one sandwich a day and living off Bill Aucoin's credit card. On the Dressed To Kill cover they borrowed his suits because only Peter Criss owned a suit.
