Kodak Black is one of the most naturally gifted lyricists to come out of South Florida and the argument that he belongs in a serious conversation about the last twenty years of rap is more defensible than most people who dismiss him want to admit. The melodic slur, the Pompano dialect so thick it becomes its own instrument, the way pain comes out sideways in his verses without ever being stated directly, that's not a style that can be taught or copied. Project Baby through Dying to Live contains stretches of writing that are poetic in the oldest sense of the word, compressed, honest, specific to a place and a life in a way that transcends both. He did it all and paid for most of it and is still here which is more than can be said for a lot of people who came up the same way.
