I wonder if people like in OP suffer from extreme aphantasia, like I'm wondering if they're even capable of abstract thought themselves because they completely miss the point of art.

I have yet to hear good AI music, see good AI art, or read good AI writing
I'm not anti-AI at all, and am very open to having my mind changed, but I don't think it's going to happen

I'm not anti-AI but applying AI to art is a really dumb idea and it's never going to work. You don't retain copyright control over wholly AI generated works, but that's only part of the problem, another part of the problem is that the art world is just too tied to humanity. Art is given value because of who made it and what their motivations were. AI artfags seem to be under this impression that people only value art based on what they believe are objective, technical competence, but that's just not how the real world works, and also by holding AI art to those standards you're just admitting it's all trash anyways because AI art generators are literally made and marketed to people who don't actually like making art themselves. And finally it just doesn't make economic sense anyways, because AI generates whatever it wants regardless if it even fits what your technical goals are, which means they require manual vetting and prompt engineering, which eliminates whatever advantages you otherwise had with turning to AI in the first place. And several studios have already ran into this issue.

AI certainly has its place, but art just aint it
>>
>>131694252
AI art is another stupid culture war to distract you from the actual issue, AI surveillance
>>
>>131694496
surveillance stops being an issue when you stop using public services in your home like phone and internet, but you won't, because at the end of the day we all chose this coffin to lie in.
>>
>>131694252
Ok but does anyone besides morons want to actually listen to AI music
>>
>>131694532
I want to listen to music I like. If it's made by AI, so be it. Unless the music is absolutely god tier, I'll simply pirate it. If it is god tier, then I'll pay a pittance to encourage more god tier music made.
>>
>>131694532
if it somehow begins to surpass the peak of human creativity and create new forms no human could ever dream of then i'll probably have to resign my soul to the machine

Yamaha DX7 was going to revolutionize music.
it was available to all and you could make infinite sounds.
I remember someone saying, "If you want to play a 50-foot glass guitar now you can do it".
(why would I want that?)

the result: that those synths ruined a lot of great 1970s groups; their 80s output is unlistenable

I just don't see what Ai offers
aside from low-cost music for labels and retailers to play in their chain stores and restaurants

if you're not a label or retailer chain owner why would you care?

No one wants to be spied on it’s just the cost of giving up the internet is too high and most people never feel the consequences of said surveillance. Also expectation of privacy legally extends to digital communication and even if we should expect de facto digital surveillance, the individual is left helpless to prevent it as digital communication becomes so fundamental to everyday life.

AI music is only good for generating generic background music or novelty songs and probably will be so forever. The average person has rock bottom tastes and AI are trained to output based on its training data and annotations then adjusted to maximize profit and engagment. So like all AI, the real bottleneck is the tasteless mass of humans outputting garbage and loving it. Though overall, people still prefer not to listen to AI music UNLESS it was AI music they generated in which case they will think it's the greatest song ever.

AI music still has a “sound” to it, and it's not up to par with a professionally produced and mixed song. The only real use I can see by artist would be cutting up AI produced samples in a DAW and then mixing them into full song. I've experimented trying to sample with Suno, and while the newer models have sound quality that's pretty ok-ish, all of it need work to the point where it was just easier for me to play the song on keyboards or the piano roll.

Honestly, it's just easier to just become a DJ or get good at working a DAW than it is to sit there and try to get the AI prompt to output what you actually want. It probably always will be too because it's the skill set not the technology that offers creative freedom.

>>131694866
Out of all the genres, AI Kpop is the closest to sounding real, in part because it's in foreign language so it's more difficult to hear artificats in the lyrics, and also because Kpop is so streamlined and artifical to begin with. It's kind of sad, some of the girls are really talented singers and musicans in their own right, but end up sounding identically generic after studio mega autists process them to hell. In the end, they're just consumer products to titallate foreigners and keep the SK birth rate well below replacement.
>>
>>131699129

>>
>>131698225
When one generates a song, do they just give a general description or does one go as far as to write the lyrics?

I'm trying to figure out if it's the machine or the human's fault that this sucks
>>
>>131694252
zoomers, they're a talentless and disposable generation in music, whose only claim to fame is the lack of competition. Soon only legacy acts will still matter, AI will replace the need for new artists
>>
>>131700920
Depends on the person. Here it's my fault, I write shitty lyrics.
>>
>>131700908
Destroying AI isn't going to force people to appreciate your music.
>>
The only way to get me to listen to AI music will be deception. I am not interested in engaging with synthetic depictions of human expression.

I'll admit some of the AI shitpost songs are amusing, that is about it.
>>
Marketing jingle musicians are basically completely obsolete thanks to AI, and it's not like they were in a good position lately either when they were mostly replaced with companies buying licenses to actual music. I think that's about it.
>>
>>131694252
There hasn't been any worthwhile innovation in music in almost a decade. AI can't end anything that isn't already over.
>>
>>131694252
Takes like this are fucking braindead as can be. The entire point of entertainment media is that I don't have to fucking come up with the idea. Nobody even wants to do the work to have a "seed idea" for the machine to run with. Here we are now; entertain us.
>>
>>131702532
There are different levels of human contribution, though. Some people prompt and pray, and a lot of these are the no effort scammers releasing hundreds of slop songs to try and game the system, making everyone else look bad.

Some people write lyrics but can't play or sing. Some people can sing passably, but use AI to tune it and add instrumentation resulting in a clone of their own voice. Some people play a melody and unload it as a seed, or compose the entire thing in midi, but then take that to the AI, then split stems, stick it in a DAW, etc.

Not all AI songs are created equal, and while there is plenty out there that lacks human expression, there is a lot where the effort and expression and intent to create something meaningful, even if only personally meaningful, is there.
>>
>>131702961
Fair enough. I can't see my dismissive stance towards "prompt and pray" changing. I would be willing to at least engage with the second group, so long as there is some degree of transparency around how the technology was used in production.
>>
>>131703151
Suno recently added download limits, and there's a contingent of users who are up in arms saying 20 or 60 (depending on their) songs a month isn't enough. I've been a subscriber for almost a year and I haven't hit 60 total.

Of course, at the same time a few local gen models were released that don't need a super high end card to run. They aren't as good as Suno, but I don't think the scammers care.

I'm the first tier of the second group. I write my lyrics, but I have no talent. I've tried, had a violin, a clarinet, a flute, a guitar, a couple of others I tried to pick up, but I was never exposed to it as a kid. No money for lessons or something to play. Best I had was a plastic recorder and a wooden 6 hole flute I lifted from a flea market when I was 12.

I do have a performance grade electric piano, weighted keys, the whole deal, that I can play a bit but in the end I completely lack dexterity, especially in my right hand.

So AI gives me the chance to play around, do things I couldn't before, and enjoy myself. I throw stuff online here and there as kind of a vanity/ego thing, and some songs my mother liked that she wanted to be able to access. I also make no secret that my stuff is AI, and I restrict it from iTunes and Apple Music because they bar AI without at least some human performer credit (writing doesn't count) and I'm not going to lie about that.
>>
normies don't really care about music. Pop/longform electronic will be taken down first. Rap will stick around becuase it requires the """artist""" to be a criminal
>>
>>131704236
glad it works for you anon, thanks for your perspective
>>
>>131700643
I mostly agree with you. I was screwing around with suno today and was pretty impressed, but ultimately my impression is that the songs it generates are very trite.
Im a rock/metal guitarist and so I would never actually use the generated audio from suno, but I could see it being useful for coming up with riff ideas, and then running them through the human filter of my brain and fingers to smooth them out.
I don't think AI is going to replace musicians any time soon, and honestly I doubt I'll be using it a year from now unless it gets substantially better. But I won't rule it out completely either.

What are good, preferably free or cheap, tools these days to get my feet wet? I'd played around with MIDI software way back in the 90's, and my little kid brain couldn't understand then why I couldn't just make it turn the .mid into a much more real sounding .wav

AI makes possible exactly what I'd wanted back then.
>>
>>131705005
Literally any DAW, it’s what they’re for, what are the free ones people use these days, Reaper? I’d say you’re better off getting comfortable sailing the high seas and acquiring FL or Ableton, plus a bunch of Kontakt libraries. Experiment with “programming in real instrument performances” and if it feels good, you can get deeper into sound design, digital signal processing, and maybe buy some tools you really like.
>>
>>131705082
>>131705005
In fact, if you tell me what type of music you want to make, I can be more specific, but here’s a list of ROMpler/Kontakt library instruments that will allow you to more or less literally “turn MIDI into realistic sounding wav”

>electric guitar and bass
Impact Soundworks’ Shreddage line. Argent and Darkwall are wildly capable for all genres, and not just for extreme metal, but they have other libraries as well

>orchestra
Eastwest Hollywood Orchestra Opus, or Audio Imperia Nucleus for a more “modern trailer” sound. Opus is especially nice for a noob due to orchestrator doing arranging assistance

>anything in the jazz/swing space, saxophones, brass, etc
Straight Ahead Samples. Atomic Big Band is genius as are their solo instruments. These have a feature that uses “stitching” samples based on the sequence of notes you programmed to make the part feel like a real session musician recorded it from sheet music, no keyswitching required to manually change how the instrument is performed

>Acoustic guitars and folk instruments
Orange Tree Samples. Includes a really great strumming pattern tool for holding chords and emulating real guitar performances

>acoustic drum kits
toontrack BFD3, or Session Drummer

>grand piano
Pianoteq. A physically modeled emulation, not sampled. Piano is ridiculously solved by physical modeling and because of how MIDI works it doesn’t need the library to “handle articulations”

>synthesizer
Just get Serum 2 and any preset pack you can find, there are fucking trillions. Serum is a great workhorse. You want a synthesizer sound of any kind, you’re basically set.
>>
>>131700108

That was quite the whoosh that's gone over my head. The reason I ask for something free is to see if there's something more basic to learn and experiment before getting into the big boy stuff. I see Ableton starts small and gets to be a big investment.

A lot of what I do is Celtic and on the other side Showtune and what I refer to as ukulele cabaret, so Straight Ahead Samples is probably in the right avenue.

>>131705258
You've never experienced art that's made you feel something longer than the instant? Something that's stuck with you? Made you think? Perhaps made you feel the opposite of good?

That's so unfathomably sad.
>>
>>131707700
Straight Ahead Samples an Orange Tree would serve you well. Impact Soundworks has a celtic fiddle which sounds quite nice though I can’t speak to its playability (bowed, fretless solo instruments are notoriously hard to translate to the push-button MIDI standard). EastWest Ra is also a decent world/folk instrument library which includes bagpipes as well as some other traditional celtic stuff

Personally I think you’re wasting your time trying to do “simple first”. It’s not an especially daunting software. Ableton Live is like photoshop. It has a lot of tools, but if you want to use it like MSPaint, you totally can. There’s no reason to “start small and learn MSPaint first”, just use the simple set of tools. Put an instrument in a lane, program the notes you want it to play, turn the volume up or down and the pan left or right to put it where you want. You can worry about everything else later. If budget is a concern, pirate all this stuff and worry about legit ownership later on once you’ve determined whether or not you’re having any fun.

I've legitimately never seen anyone excited about hearing new and interesting music from Suno. Literally never in my life. Not even in this thread or others like it where people who are purportedly its biggest supporters come to shill for it.

It's always, and I do mean always
>tick tock, luddite
It's always the claim that soon, the machine will make it possible for "anyone to make music". The promise seems to be that it will enable you to generate music without having any musical talent, with just the push of a button. It's entirely about the desire to insert yourself into creative spaces and larp as a talented creative person. Nobody wants to listen to what Suno makes, they want YOU to listen to what Suno makes. They want you to think of them as a musician. They want to be recognized as a talented artist and performer because when they were kids they wanted to be rock stars but practicing guitar was too hard or whatever. It is entirely about letting you "be a musician", it's not at all about making good music. Nobody has ever said
>Honestly I don't even listen to real musicians anymore, I just generate what I want to hear and listen to that. It's always better than what real musicians are making
