Any good resources to learn this skill?
When making music i really struggle to write through lyrics of any song and always end up with random phrases that I think sound good but can't make them fit together.

My main language is Spanish but I write in English bc I feel that my lyrics in Spanish sound even more silly. I know that in the end this doesn't really matter and I should just worry about finishing my projects but I know Manny people really pay attention to music lyrics (im not one of them)

read poetry

there's no secret, you have to just write every day.

also this. and read classic literature as well.

I wouldn't say "Read poetry" or "literature" necessarily or even to "write everyday" as the other anons said. I would say think about the type of lyric that you are trying to write, the content, the sound, the rhythm, the feeling it gives to you and etc and they practice by trial and error. But not necessarily just as an exercise; practice also as fun and pleasure. Sometimes very interesting and pleasant lyrics come very randomly, suddenly and unexpectedly to your mind, by inspiration. Just because you were inspired by something else from the world in general, or something that you were doing or thinking, that is, from the extern world or from your more internal world. You don't need to copy or imitate too much the artists you enjoy or to any extent at all. But it helps for inspiration too, of course. And also obviously helps a lot if you in fact would please to imitate your enjoyed artists' style.
That to say: writing lyrics can absolutely be a literary action, but you can also do it more freely, and really very many people who right/wrote cool lyrics did it in this freer way, and possibly not even read that much, or if they did, possibly didn't necessarily use that source of technique and inspiration for writing (many of) their lyrics.

it needs to both be phonetically pleasing and semantically interesting. it would be hard for an ESL to do that
>>
>>131697963
>it would be hard for an ESL to do that
ESL doesn't meant English never to be fluent or decent, though. But it's obviously harder generally.
>>
tip #1: don't try to make it rhyme like a fucking pleb
that's for children

>ESL doesn't meant English never to be fluent or decent
of course not, but good poetry is indicated by its idiosyncrasies (among other things). if you wanna write something evocative where you use words to put ideas (or emotions) in peoples heads, knowing that languages' intricacies is pretty important. people remember a curve ball.

I can only write rap lyrics, which is weird. What I mean is I can only write phrases with a really deliberate rhyme scheme, I just don’t have the mental framework for lyrics that don’t rhyme. But I can grab any random song chorus and sing it back in my head and it will be formatted like
[words words words]
[the phrase]
[other words other words other words]
[the phrase]
[maybe some other nonsense here at the end]

I can’t conceptualize that kind of lyrical framework. Any attempt at writing a melody-driven phrase will invariably come out sounding like Lin Manuel Miranda. I don’t know how to make it stop.

>retarded non-sequitors
lmao
yeah making things rhyme is very easy. it's just painting by numbers. just match rhyming words with phrases.

But surely it’s not some fart sniffing “true artistry” thing? Lyrics that don’t rhyme (or I guess maybe more accurately, lyrics that rhyme with themselves) are a staple of popular slop too. Some examples just as they spring into my mind

>Hey are you okay? You look pretty low, very handsome, awkward. Do you feel okay? You look pretty low, very handsome, awkward
>one night, yeah, one more time. Thanks for the memories, even though they weren’t so great. He tastes like you, only sweeter
>with a taste of your lips I’m on a rise. You’re toxic, I’m slipping under. With the taste of your poison paradise, I’m addicted to you, don’t know that you’re toxic?
(I guess this has one internal end-rhyme on bars 1 and 3)
>I’d chime in with a “haven’t you people ever heard of closing the god damn door?” No? It’s much better to face these kinds of things with a sense of poise and rationality

This isn’t exactly True Poetry And Art. It’s clearly just a different kind of formula or obvious approach that I never really digested or learned to emulate.
>>
>>131699219
yeah obviously not and you're missing the point fully and getting your own points across without regard for the actual conversation.
makes sense you write rap music.
you have no capacity for emotional rationality.
>>
>>131699227
You aren’t making a point. All you said is
>don’t make lyrics rhyme
Surely there has to be more to it than that. Surely there’s some kind of structure to the phrasing that enables this. Because you have counterexamples like Hand In My Pocket where the song slaps you in the face with the fact that it doesn’t rhyme. It’s a very obvious subversion, your ear is expecting a rhyme it doesn’t get, and it makes you do a double-take every time because of how weird it sounds.

Why does it sound weird when Alanis Morissette doesn’t make the phrase at the end of “I got one hand in my pocket, and the other is [thing]”, but it doesn’t sound weird when Taylor Swift says “when you’re 15 and somebody tells you they love you, you’re gonna believe them” and then the next line doesn’t rhyme with that at all?
>>
i dont care for your research of pop music.
if you cant instinctively write good, nothing will help
>>
>>131699275
I sometimes forget that the desire to understand how something works is a uniquely white impulse and browns simply can't relate to that kind of innate curiosity.
>>
>>131699287
quantifying art and feelings is the domain of soulless husks

Feel something in B flat, motherfucker
>>
>>131699303
>B flat
bet that's how ur gf is tuned
>>
>>131699219
>heard of / door? no
Barely a rhyme but theres definitely a subtle phonetic echoing that makes this line hit
>face these kinds of things / rationality
Same thing. So in this case there's something to be said about having an ear / tongue for phonetics. Rhyme is just echoing, unifying, and there are other techniques that do that. Some of those techniques aren't even established things with names, you just kind of randomly think to do it because it works.
>>
Personally I try to play Contexto.me everyday to exercize my verbal brain. Not sure if it helps but it makes sense.
>>
>>131699302
Nah, it's the domain of people who want to make their music sound good.
>>
>>131699671
>music
>lyrics
lmao fucked up before you even started lol
>>
Just read more stuff if you try and write stuff without prior reading experience it always reads awkwardly
>>
>>131699715
>lyrics aren't integrated with the music and important to the sound of the music
Ngmi

>>131699219
That Fall Out Boy song rhymes in the first five fucking seconds, you dumb bastard.
