I feel like Glenn Branca doesn't get enough credit for inventing the "guitar symphony" sound of bands like GY!BE and Swans

This basically sounds like LYSFLATH if you take away the strings and field recordings and it was released in the 80s
>>

he was basically doing swans late career during the 80s. As always people just stay with the most acclaimed work and call it a day
>>
>>131697257
it does but it lacks the warmth and folk aesthetic in GYBE. Wouldn’t be surprised if they listened to Branca’s music tho
>>

They did name a track on one of their live albums after Steve Reich and he was from the same NYC downtown music scene as Glenn Branca, which in turn was a direct influence on Sonic Youth and Swans.
>>
>>131697855
direct influence? they played for Branca....

>>131697257
he does
but it isnt gonna make his dead ass famous with normies
love you glennn
>>
>>131697257
Why should he, he directly ripped off Rhys Chatham
>>
>>131698110
hard to say minimalist types doing minimalist type shit ripped each other off
>>
>>131698132
It's not even debatable bro. Glenn Branca played in Chatham's multi-guitar ensembles before ever writing anything in the format, he was in theoretical girls at that time.
>>
>>131698199
that being said Chathams music mostly sucks and I far prefer Branca's music.
>>
>>131698199
i dont know all of theoretical girls work, and im not really up at all on brancas life, but

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4RN2vv7V1Q

is a pretty minimalist arted up jam

>>131698212
yeah i barely know any of his music but like one song

minimalism, repetition, duration these were all serious forces in the new york art scene. so id still not lean toward anyone ripping anyone off just yet

lets have some music@@

He absolutely does get the credit. I also blame him for Sonic Youth.

If you like Glenn Branca, Rhys Chatham was from the same scene and made similar music. He has an album with like 100 guitarists playing or so.

Absolute plebian opinion. An Angel Moves Too Fast To See? Die Donnergotter? Two Gongs? Guitar Trio (obviously)? Drastic Classicism? A Crimson Grail?
Don't get me wrong, I love Branca as much as the next guy by Chatham was on another level. The dude pioneered the post rock sound and pulled off the whole "rock can be classical" thing without it being too contrived.
>>
Cage was right about him.

Everyone is "ripping off" everyone. It means nothing really. OP is too retarded to understand it. It's the "le Van Halen didn't invent double tapping!!!>.<" shit again. Art is about meaningful and cerebral transfiguration of what has come before. That is what is meant when the term "innovative" is used.
>>131697257
It doesn't. The way he structures his crescendos and his buildups are both quite different. He had a general influence on symphonic rock (which he didn't invent and was himself building upon someone else's work, as is always the case with these things), but GY!BE's selling point was their re-interpretation of rock crescendo. One melody built up and repeatedly reconsituted through rearrangements for the entire duration of a crescendo, which is also the entire movement or the song. That's why they felt so cinematic and narratively charged compared to the post-rock scene before them, and why a big chunk of the scene after them is filled with their imitators. Classical music is vast. And crescendos are older than Beethoven. Nor Branca the first one to think of "rock+classical" for the first time. His influence is rightly rated as the general influencing of genres from which these later bands evolved.

But yeah, 2nd era Swans definitely hit too close to Branca's sound in few of their crescendo heavy songs. I'll give you that much.

>id still not lean toward anyone ripping anyone off just yet
By the same standards you are applying to these later bands, it's safe to say that your favoritism and bias have you in denial.
