The Very Best of Loretta and Conway [MCA, 1979]While the midrange emotions here are projected likably enough, they're nowhere near as powerful as on George and Tammy's best-of, perhaps because L&C have never been a real-life couple. But this does offer fourteen virtually dudless tracks and includes four great ones--two blatantly comedic ("Spiders and Snakes" and the classic "You're the Reason Our Kids Are Ugly") and two shamelessly bathetic ("The Letter" and "As Soon as I Hang Up the Phone," both graced by long passages of recitative). Note billing order. B+
