Now that the dust has settled, is it the greatest song of the 21st century?

It’s pretty good. Sadly all it does is cement that there is no longer anything new under the sun, music is just constantly recycling old trends indefinitely.

I try not to despair tho. As we approach a new intellectual dark age I’m looking forward to medieval revivalist pop in 2035. Bards will be rocking tonsures, ripping lutes and rapping in old English meter about sipping mead and courting wenches, screencap this

metal heads are way ahead of you

Dungeon synth is a precursor, but I’m talking about mainstream adoption. Find me a rapper spitting over a dungeon synth type beat, or a stomp-clap-hey band using medieval instrumentation and harmony, and then we’re getting a little closer.

Salem?

Salem is cool and all, but witch house isn’t dungeon synth.

Like I said, I don’t think we’re quite there yet. I’m sure there’s some obscure soundcloud artist doing what I’m describing, but until we start seeing friar tuck monk robes on fashion runways or popular rappers name dropping Thomas Aquinas, it’s still just a pipe dream.

electronic musicians are way ahead of you

https://aesthetics.fandom.com/wiki/Keller_Synth

Keller Synth (from German Keller, meaning "cellar" or "basement") or Tänzelcore (from German tänzeln, meaning "to prance") are two names for the same underground electronic music subgenre, both coined by the artist Sigfrid in the late 2010s. The genre fuses the eerie medieval themes of Dungeon Synth with the raw aggression of Black Metal and intentionally lo-fi, unpolished production.

Musically, Keller Synth is characterized by frenetic drum programming, lo-fi production techniques, and synth work that blends medieval tonalities with aggressive textures. Black metal elements, including shrieked vocals and distorted guitar passages or synthesizer mimicry of black metal composition, are frequently incorporated. The production deliberately retains recording imperfections including warble, tape hiss, room noise, and distortion.

Aesthetically, the genre employs high-contrast color schemes of neon green and black, featuring imagery such as woodcut-style figures, dancing witches/gnomes, and other medieval or fantastical subjects rendered in deliberately crude or amateurish styles.

underground rap is pretty interesting if you search for people with under 100k listeners.

I saw some incel call this a new genre the other day lmao

Another anon missing the point. If it’s an “underground electronic music subgenre”, then it’s irrelevant to the broader cultural consciousness. There’s all sorts of weird and wonderful microgenres doing interesting stuff with medieval aesthetics, but it’s not exactly breaking into mainstream awareness.
