He's basically completely self-taught.
I agree that the robotic Thumpy Thumpy stuff that he loves to do is soulless sounding, but I guess that's the point since it's all about technique, but many of his solos are really damn great and soulful. Imo he excels in both areas. Compared to the Instagram shredders he sounds way more human yet he can still outshred most of them.
