Yeah I’ve watched a lot of Troy Grady’s stuff and while he can distill some concepts into patterns, every great player has a different technique in some way and they’ve just refined it over years and years of practice.
>>
>>131761353
Lane was sloppy though
>>
>>131761411
I agree but I attribute that to his specific style. Marty Friedmans megadeth solos are also "sloppy" but not in a poor technique sort of way. Paul Gilbert I would consider to be the complete opposite although they have similar stylistic backgrounds/discogs

Yeah it's probably about time.. The Mesa scares me though with how cramped it is. Bassman and VTM are relatively wide open, especially the Bassman which is handwired / point to point. Ganna start with replacing a couple microphonic ceramic caps on the Bassman then filter caps / power section of the VTM and maybe eventually the Mesa.

Is it just me, or are most electric guitarists good at rhythm? I see all these awkward chords, and it seems like sloppy playing, mostly because they’re used to playing what “sounds good” on an acoustic guitar and practicing plugged in on an electric guitar rather than following a more methodical approach. When they play acoustic, it’s messy, full of buzzing and sliding. Petrucci hit the nail on the head when he said that practicing with an electric guitar is best done unplugged. I, for example, always play chords as arpeggios to hear which note I’m muting. And also for better fretting. Another thing is that I’ve started to appreciate classical music more. Really, most popular songs don’t justify a runtime longer than 1:00 minute.

Although Petrucci is undoubtedly better than me, an anonoymous nigger on the internet I disagree with his advice of practicing electric unplugged. You'll get the notes out loud, but you might not be hearing the intricate stuff like pick attack, legato and all the unwanted noises that will come out at louder stage volumes. Even playing shreddy stuff with the same amp at its lower wattage mode sounds easier; whereas it gets noticeably more precarious and prone to sloppiness when you toggle it to the higher wattage and play at louder volumes. Then again that depends on the gain/compression/noise gate that you're using. I just find that distortion at lower volumes sound more compressed compared to the same settings but going higher wattage which has more volume and headroom.
Better to just practice playing unplugged on the acoustic.

Post your JCM? I was looking at 2210’s there for a little bit, but deicded to go with something new instead of vintage this time. The two extra clipping diodes on the modified series are neat. If i had gone with something different itd have been with the ‘59 modified rather than going with something vintage.

I just got a 57 LP custom last week. Traded a few guitars for it. I spent years going to guitar shops trying out various custom shop and standard production LPs and 335s. Most of the custom shops I played were made in 2020-2026 and I don’t think I ever saw any serious flaw in their finishing or other important things like break angle, position of the tunomatic bridge posts, etc.. The standard production Gibsons I played weren’t all bad or anything, but I do recall seeing a few that just didn’t feel that great and also had some finishing flaws such as sloppy binding, almost bone dry fretboard, crappy fret installation, but even those were a small minority of examples I saw. People talk a lot of shit on forums about how “awful” Gibson QC is and honestly I have not found any of these horrendous guitars people are talking. If you are going to buy any guitar regardless of brand, you would be a moron if you didn’t actually play it in person before buying. My LPC was made this year and it is flawless and plays better than any Gibson I’ve tried. Just because a LP may look incredible and have flawless finishing does not mean it’s going to feel right when you actually play it. In my experience the custom shop stuff these days is pretty locked in

Git gud. After 10 years I stopped playing for two or three years and got back into it with minimal practice. You must just suck.

I’ve played either guitar, bass, or drums once a week at church for the last ten years, mostly guitar but I’ll fill in on bass or drums when there isn’t anyone else available for those. Maybe 150 people tops, it’s a small church. It’s just church music though, I haven’t been in a band playing my original rock flavored stuff in five or six years but I’ve been in a country rock/Americana band with friends for the last four years or so. I like to record my own stuff on my own and just play everything myself but with the band stuff we all write stuff and also play covers, it’s just a fun thing to do with friends.

80s style Heavy / Speed Metal. The gig we're playing is quite a weird one, it starts with a comedian, then it's my band and after us there'll be two hardcore bands. The gig got downgraded to a smaller stage in the same venue due to slow ticket sales, lol. After that we'll start working on a demo / ep.
