recently discovered the breadtubers exploiting the curious hobbyists with their music production "knowledge" have been gain staging incorrectly the whole time by using VU meters on every single component, including kick and snare. they do this because they force you to buy their plugin that include VU meters and tell you its the only correct way to do it.

I salute all the lads who posted here because this music shit is not easy. kevin parker (tame impala) gets to have racks of outboard gear, a tape machine, several analog synths, yet you insist that there's nothing special about the sound vs plugins, you're utterly obstinate and fixated on the idea that the way of the future is to use digital plugins that are mostly vibe slop coded these days yet most people can't even think of cool things to do with plugins besides emulations of old school gear like >>131774142. some anons admit that they will never produce a hit, make millions of dollars, win grammys etc, yet they have the dunning-kruger hubris to insist that they know that there's nothing of merit to the sound of analog gear, that you must be a talentless hack who wants to use it as a crutch if you desire analog gear, but kevin parker gets to have it because reasons?? you're utterly delusional, utterly stupid, untalented, you don't even enjoy most music outside of hyper specific genres like 185bpm anime arcade game soundtracks.

>>131788794>recommendations yeah read a book of poetry you hackit’s too large a topic to tackle in one post with no context, but the generic answer is to get conscious influences/taste, and examine what you’re trying to express and how that is best said

in a hypothetical scenario where someone gave me an ultimatum to become a doctor or else i would die (i'm not suicidal in this scenario), it would be piss-easy for me to go through med school, i would have completely valid confidence that my intellect is sharp enough to learn everything that would be required from a doctor, i would adapt and enjoy my new identity as a med school student and future doctor. but some people would be too brainlet to become a doctor no matter how hard they tried even though you don't have to invent something new to become a doctor, just do more or less the same as countless other human beings have already proven is possible to do. some people might have ADHD tendencies so they could force their way through med school but they would hate every second of it, they're not naturally talented to do such things. this kind of thing applies to music production as well, most people couldn't produce a hit song even if their life was on the line as in this hypothetical scenario, even if they were given years and years to dedicate to learning music production, they're just lacking something in their brain so that they can't make particularly great music.

let’s be honest/prod/ is unsalvageable at this point pack it up
Question: I took a live recording of a band a couple of months ago - the tracks consist of one soundboard stereo mixdown feed, a stereo pair of room mics close to the stage, and a stereo pair of room mics by FOH (this source is unbalanced, it would probably need like +3db added to the left channel). The end goal for me is to keep the "band playing in a room" feel - the soundboard feed lacks low end thump but makes up for it in clarity, and vice versa for the room mics. How would you approach mixing and matrixing these? I gave it a couple of attempts a few months ago, but was unsatisfied by the results, even a little embarrassed to send a hasty mix to the band. Here's a screenshot of the waveforms - I can post a zip of the files if anyone in /prod/ is willing to take a crack at it.

>>131822564>Do you do sound at a place and that's how you got ahold of the recordings?Naw. It took asking the headliner for permission to record ahead of time, and a cool ass venue 5 hours from where I live to pull this off, plus a competent and willing audio engineer to let me plug in a field recorder to the console. This was my hobby for a little while.>i did very subtle m/s eq on the rooms, and then a tiny bit of eq on the master just to tone down the high midThank you. Never considered m/s eq to help alter it.>the FOH mic actually drifted a lotYeah, I dunno what happened with that source. Maybe it had to do with distance and not spacing the mics properly. This was before I picked up a 3D printed DIN-spaced stand for the capsules.
>>131822629>a cool ass venue 5 hours from where I live to pull this offwell worth the effort. it’s tragic how little high quality live music gets captured for lesser known acts >Never considered m/s eq to help alter ityeah ime it’s third on the list after a phase flip and just lowering the width when it comes to correcting phase. most often just couple db on a bell or shelf will completely fix something.
>>131822703>tragic how little high quality live music gets captured for lesser known actsIt was a simple goal to enhance what actually matters in a live performance - the music itself. For established bands, if I did a good job, it would be a boon to their archival. For up-and-comers, it gives them a document to promote their live act (if they did well), and a clearer blueprint on what to focus on fixing in rehearsal (if they did poorly).Plenty of live videos get captured and uploaded to YouTube that sound like shit, because the smartphone or built-in mic on the camera can't handle the SPL of a typical concert - it just distorts or engages some built-in compression. They were designed to capture audio at speaking volumes. It's also a bit worrying to see Instagram and TikTok (reels in particular) become the primary way to promote one's band - visual spectacle should never override the actual music. I dislike Angine de Poitrine taking advantage of this (the music is boring).but yeah enough about my gay ethos, video killed the radio star and so on

>>131832604okay well either way you should be trying several sounds a day as opposed to being hung up on one (song, whatever).at the very least scrap and restart with a new synth, effect or whatever so you can see how many different routes you can take to similar results, or what variations you can get.
Without telling me to scrap it and start all over, can /prod/ anons tell me what you would do to make this not sound like shithttps://voca.ro/1fdwIz2Dn62f
completely change the arrangement so the pad and lead aren’t clashing like crazy, rethink whatever filtering, reverb and distortion you’re doing. basically thin all that out and focus on separation
>>131832812>>131832867meant for you btw, sorry
>>131826780Whats your opinion on pan law?
>>131833257i think people should just call themselves bi i don’t understand why everybody needs to be so fucking woke and special about who they fuck
>the culprit was DC offset the whole timebruh my fucking headroom
Trying to make some spooky atmospheric noise for a Halloween noise compilationhttps://vocaroo.com/17MdewpKLEu4
what's stopping someone from buying youtube views to another person and then reporting that person just to fuck him over and no one never knows anything?
>>131833562you wouldnt even need to report them, just buy easily detected bot views and the automated system will detect it
https://voca.ro/1jxWUOdPVNz5what does prod thingk about my newest loop?>>131832812lead gets kinda stale towards the end but otherwise sounds great
thanks to the dude who recommended newgrounds the other daygot scouted, frontpaged and a couple thousand plays of my track in the last 24 hrs
>>131833630I should try this
I know almost 200 chords now but my improv hasn't really gotten any better. What do you call that part, and how do I get better at it?
>>131834442practice probably“applied” theory and not just “theory”
>>131833257it's one of the most trivial aspects of music production, you're being retarded if you get stuck on worrying about such a thing for an extended period of time, even if you want to get it perfectly right you should be able to find the answers, if you choose the right tools they should give the user the option to choose a good pan law, you don't need to reinvent the wheel
I want to buy another semi modular and a 2000 dollars of eurorack modules>t. never released a song ever
>>131835292but youve made dank sounds
>>131835653Thats true. Thanks :)
I wanted to do a cover of "Out of the Rain" by Clan of Xymox (amazing song btw), I thought that I wasn't going to be able to pull it off but I actually managed to make it through the whole thing and it came out pretty decent. Someone else might listen to it and think it sucked, but I liked how it came out.https://vocaroo.com/12kyVn19Ej8i
https://vocaroo.com/15Yrty7xiLG9>boom bapquick remix i did
https://voca.ro/1gyMf1HR39t4I tried playing the drums with my midi keyboard, pretty fun stuff. Just some jungle with the sonic advance 3 soundfont.
I pressed random keys on my keyboard for a bit and I can't play the piano at all. Someone else might listen to it and think it sucked, but I liked how it came out.https://vocaroo.com/1fDFubc0zpZl

>>131822965I lost the plot too, anon. Listening back to Aadam Jacobs's live tapes (often written to cassettes, transferred to digital and barely post-processed in a simple DAW like Audacity) made me realize I'm being too concerned with some arbitrary standard of quality. The end result is what it is. I think I'm just disgusted with the laziness of what passes for archival these days. One shit sounding vertical video recorded on impulse is usually what gets publically posted on YouTube of most concerts, if at all. Jacobs truly loved music, a melomaniac in all senses. It is mind boggling how much this man captured in the friendly city of Chicago during the best years of experimentation in rock. Taping shows in full is the ultimate sign of appreciation for a musician. I dunno. Maybe I'm salty. I was denied permission to record an upcoming concert, a band member I personally talked to didn't go to bat for me, and I don't want to attend if I can't do so. The last time I did, it broke my heart seeing happy people not having a document of the music that provided them such a good time.I'll cut the sorriness. some Unwound-adjacent rawkin for you to get into.https://archive.org/details/ajc03617_rodan_1994-02-11/ajc03617_rodan_1994-02-11_lounge_ax_t08.flac
