buying physical is actually the most financially responsible thing to do. it provides redundancy so that you aren't entirely reliant on your computer, and places a limit on the ways in which the manufacturer of the synth can exploit their customers.
because of piracy and the general pressures of capitalism, software companies are incentivized to behave in increasingly hostile ways toward the customer in ways that don't apply to hardware. with hardware, you buy the product once and it's yours to do with whatever you like until it physically breaks.
you can even "buy" the iPad version of Logic at all, you can only subscribe to it. granted it's not much, it's $5/mo afaik, but that price can (and will) increase in the future and you'll have to accept those increases because you're already using it and you don't want to be locked out. there is no definitive point where you're finally done paying. if you decide to stop, you'll be locked out of your own project files.

you're paying your computer on a monthly basis to not lock you out of access to the stuff you made with it. it's blackmail. shit is draconian. and it's not even particularly uncommon, this is just standard practice for how software synths work now.

and this isn't even mentioning that with software there are other inconveniences, like needing to routinely connect to the internet to verify certificates, or repurchase the same product again even if it isn't subscription based.

hardware synths are cheaper now than ever before. you can get a Volca FM 2 for like $100. it's literally an entire DX7 in a tiny battery powered box plus a sequencer and a couple fx. Roland's AIRA series is the same. you can get good shit now for cheap. there's no reason to no pick up at least one synthesizer.
>>
>>131803784
>$5
whoops I just looked it up. it's no longer available standalone. it's $12.99/mo now. lmao. $129 a year just to not get locked out. my god
>>
>>131803312
Physical synths can make noises software literally cannot make at all.
>erm ackshually blind studies prove you can't tell the difference betwe—
I'm not talking about sound quality. I'm talking about the sounds themselves. There are things that can only be achieved with hardware synths that cannot be achieved with software, the same way there are things you can do in software that can't be done in hardware. Also relying on a laptop for everything just sucks ass lmao. That shit is not fun at all. Hardware is instant, it's reactive, it's an instrument. You can pick it up and just start playing like with a guitar. Imagine having to boot up your desktop and sit through the Ableton splash screen whenever you want to just play around real quick.
>>
SH01A with the addon keyboard (before the Behringer clone came out).
I bought it to learn how to use a synth because I was just randomly nob twiddling on VSTIs. No regrets, it worked, recommend it to anyone (probably get the Behringer now tho).
>>
>>131803873
>I'm talking about the sounds themselves. There are things that can only be achieved with hardware synths that cannot be achieved with software
I've been programming software and hardware synths for decades. it's nonsense. it's not 1982 anymore. I know you spent $50k on hardware and produce nothing but fart noises but you could at least attempt to learn something and not be a fucking retard lol

>Hardware is instant, it's reactive, it's an instrument.
most hardware synths (including purely analog stuff for some reason), drum machines/samplers over last 2 decades more than likely running some kind of low latency linux os with a vastly slower CPU than your 10yo android phone and connected up to a dac that's probably as good as what's in your laptop or phone.

you have no idea just how shit and mediocre music tech has become and how little you get for your money. really expensive shit produced by yamaha and roland contain multiple (and massive) fpga chips, with multiple ARM cores+RAM per chip, to run the entire show. the power is in the custom chips. thankfully pc tech has advanced so rapidly that's it's probably possible to emulate yamaha or roland's flagship products with VST/CLAP plugins and nobody would know the difference.
>>
>>131803784
>you aren't entirely reliant on your computer
This is the reason I like hardware. I have literally zero willpower so if you put me in front of a computer I won't make any music I'll just procrastinate on the internet all day.
>>
>>131805766
>I've been programming software and hardware synths for decades. it's nonsense. it's not 1982 anymore.
Either you're lying, you're really bad at your job, or you aren't super into synths and aren't aware of the more obscure ones that rely on mechanics that can't be emulated on PC because you're stuck thinking of like popular analog synths from a couple decades ago. It's one or more of those things.
>most hardware synths (including purely analog stuff for some reason), drum machines/samplers over last 2 decades more than likely running some kind of low latency linux os with a vastly slower CPU than your 10yo android phone and connected up to a dac that's probably as good as what's in your laptop or phone.
I'm not talking about CPU power, I'm talking about form. Even a piece of shit like the KO II for example is fun to use because it boots in like 5ms and is less clunky to use than having to navigate an OS meant to handle much more than just music making as core tasks. The fundamental problem with using only a MacBook is that it's a MacBook. It's not designed for music. You can make music on it, but it's not designed FOR music, from the ground up. It's an interface issue.

>makes sound that has been made before at some point by someone else who owned the same
immediately proved you don't know much about synthesizers. many of them are extreme versatile and will not sound alike at all in the hands of different users. those knobs and sliders and switches and buttons you see aren't just decoration. you can push a synthesizer to the point of being unrecognizable between tracks depending on which one you're talking about.
>All synth and VST users are coping with the fact that they're too retarded to use SC, Pd, or Max.
doubly retarded. "dude just program your own synth from the ground up instead of just using one that already exists" is this nigga serious

also some synths straight up can't be done in software, particularly those that rely on physics as a kind of timbral variable. landscape noon, motor synth and phase8 for example. the best you could do in software is use randomness in some parameters but it won't sound the same.

"But muh versatility" maybe if you're running an ems synthi or a buchla wall you're possibly working with almost the same amount of possibilities at your fingertips that you have upon opening a new file in any audio programming language. Also do you think I'm retarded, of course I know those knobs do something, but there are hard limits when your synthesizer has a set number of oscillators and modulation options. That doesn't even begin to address the fact that there are synthesis techniques that have no good hardware options (physical modeling, pulsar, fractal wavefolding, the list goes on). Even for synths that use physical properties, I'd rather spend an hour programming a 99% accurate physical model than a minimum 700$ (for the synths you mentioned) to have one physical process.

I see programming the same way other people might set up presets on a hardware synthesizer, only programming languages are far less clunky than most hardware that offers any kind of preset saving (looking at you waldof).

I'd rather pay 0$ for infinite synthesizers that I have millisecond precision control over and can configure any way I want, than pay any amount of money for a solution that offers me less than that.

>>131818790
At least the last guy wasn't an absolute retard, the digital vs anal-log audio debate has been solved, digital sounds the fucking same, you're either a midwit, or purposely not understanding the argument that every other midwit on this board has no trouble understanding. Shoot yourself in the face

>"But muh versatility" maybe if you're running an ems synthi or a buchla wall you're possibly working with almost the same amount of possibilities at your fingertips that you have upon opening a new file in any audio programming language.
if you don't think the notion that synthesizers have no versatility is true, you shouldn't have implied that with your last post.
i'm not anti-computer. i use supercollider all the time. I use VSTs all the time. I use analog synths all the time. I use everything because I don't want to rely entirely on anything. you keep telling me i should sell my synths and use only my computer but can never provide a solid reason as to why.
>Also do you think I'm retarded,
yeah
>of course I know those knobs do something, but there are hard limits when your synthesizer has a set number of oscillators and modulation options.
software also has hard limitations that dedicated hardware doesn't always have to have.
>That doesn't even begin to address the fact that there are synthesis techniques that have no good hardware options (physical modeling, pulsar, fractal wavefolding, the list goes on).
the same is true vice versa. this is why i use everything and pledge allegiance to nothing.
>I'd rather spend an hour programming a 99% accurate physical model
lmao spoken like a true freetard. erm i'd rather just spend 6 weeks building a vhs degradation emulator from scratch and get 80% of the way there than simply buy a vcr off eBay because...b-because...the future!!!
>programming languages are far less clunky
learning supercollider is way harder, less convenient and less instantly rewarding than playing a synthesizer anon
>I'd rather pay 0$ for infinite synthesizers that I have millisecond precision control over and can configure any way I want, than pay any amount of money for a solution that offers me less than that.
