Most artists in the genre couldn't escape the shadow of what was actually a very small scene during a pretty short period. I mean D'Angelo and Erykah Badu were great, and to a lesser extent I could appreciate Jill Scott or Maxwell... but then there's a pretty fucking huge powergap to a whole bunch of artists who were just okay at best.The revival of last decade had its moments, but as smooth as bands like Moonchild sound, a lot of it is also kind of revisionist. The only band of the neo soul revival that really stood out to me is Hiatus Kaiyote... Apart from just having good tunes, they're forward looking instead of just wallowing in early 00s sounds.
