So you love KC’s debut, but refuse to listen to Red and Close to the Edge. Are you just a memelord or something?

yeah its because of the unlistenably awful music.
looking in my library for genres commonly done by black people (here I'm counting blues, dub, jazz, reggae, soul and r&b, plus some pop and traditional music from various regions of Africa) I have a total of 396 albums, all of which I like and many of which I rate very highly.
I think modern American rap is a pile of steaming fucking dogshit though.
you should try being more open minded to music from other peoples, cultures and times, then you'd realise that black people have produced far more accomplished music than just shitty hip hop for mindlet pleb faggot little bitches.

because rating aggregation sites are fucking stupid. by averaging out thousands upon thousands of opinions they completely erase any vestige of personal taste. its no surprise if you like some of the RYM top 100 but if you like most or all of it that would just be weird.
at the end of the day RYM is no different to the weekly Top 40, just extended back over time, and look how much crap dominates the charts. its not always exclusively shit but most of it is because most people have shit taste in music.

most of these albums are at the very least decent, anyone who acts like most of them are unlistenable garbage is just being a contrarian faggot. considering most of them 'top 100' contenders is laughable though

its almost as if you're making an argument for objective quality in art
>>
>>131819598
if any two pieces of art are at all different from each other then objective quality can be said to exist

different != better or worse

this argument was considered settled literal millennia ago, just so you know

>my own criteria
>apply it (sic) very objectively
for the sake of everyone who has to interact with you on a daily basis, I hope this was a joke
>>
>>131819713
we are talking about objective quality in art, not nature or hierarchy of beings
beef and lamb are not manmade creations. it is impossible to speak of them in terms of objective quality as it relates to art. what a human then does to those things can be evaluated, but they are obviously not art in themselves. what we have is a completely different discussion than the ones you are referencing
>>
>>131819775
oh god ok then please give the correct set of criteria which should be used to measure the quality of music, explain why they and not others are the correct metrics, how one might decide, for instance, which out of two melodies is "better," and how you would deal with objections that your preferred criteria are not in fact the correct ones and that a different set should be used, or objections that you are not giving the correct weighting to each particular criterion

you don't know. you know it exists, but exactly what entails it is a guess. we can prove that the universe began at some point, but to exactly what happened there are countless theories.
the best you can do is gather as many informed opinions as possible. if you prefer the taste of lamb to beef, stick to lamb. judge as many preparations of lamb as possible, and dont bother with beef. compare your judgement of different lamb meals with other lamb peoples judgements.
what we have in this thread are tons of lamb people ranking lamb against beef, pork, chicken, etc even though they hate everything that isn't lamb. if you want to get closer to accurately ascribing objective quality, right there is a great place to start.
its very easy to dismiss the idea of objective quality when 95% of discussion on this board is foot-stomping 'i don't listen to rap therefore it sucks'. when you get rid of pointless discussion and shitflinging like that, you can actually arrive at somewhat of a consensus, which, despite shaky, clearly posits the existence of objective value. there is a reason as to why people can agree at all
>>
>>131819975
what did i say that was edgy at all wtf lmao
>>
>>131819975
idk I dont mean to be so harsh. this is a such a common misconception, that certain music is actually of an intrinsically high worth. and we all contribute to the illusion, Im as guilty as anybody when talking about music, I say things are great or shit etc when all Im really justified in saying is whether I like them or not and how much. and unless you take the time to think about it and drill down to the fact that its all ultimately pure subjectivism, everything from the endless ratings and reviews which music is plagued with, wordy cunts like cuckgau and scaruffi yapping on with apparent authority, to our own fallibility in our use of language, it all eventually adds up and contributes to these ideas.
>>131820075
>we can prove that the universe began at some point, but to exactly what happened there are countless theories
if my beef and lamb analogy was going too far I am definitely not accepting big bang cosmology as relevant or illuminating in the matter of musical quality.
and more seriously, I don't accept consensus either. by that argument you would have to concede that the Top40 is the best music currently being released, or at least, even if you can't trust its precision, accept that its a good indicator.
>>
>>131820168
i get what youre saying, but why would you even practice violin for example if there is no objectivity? why would you want to spend time doing something unnatural, like playing scales over and over, if what you produce is no better than someone who took your instrument and smashed it? what is the point to making anything at all if there is nothing objective, why not go on suno.ai and put in prompts? it just seems like a very hopeless and negative way of thinking, i feel that rather than abolish the idea that some art is higher we should be more inclusive in what art is considered 'higher worth'. maybe theres something im missing here that you could explain
as for top40, just because it's a consensus doesnt make it a good one. you'd have to be sound in the methodology, like I used in the lamb example, in gathering informed opinions (those who contribute to the top40 are not particularly informed obviously lol)
>>
>>131818820

>>131820274
>i get what youre saying, but why would you even practice violin for example if there is no objectivity? why would you want to spend time doing something unnatural, like playing scales over and over
to get the sound that you want to produce and others want to hear, because its nice, because its satisfying, because its what the composer intended. because people like it. the fact that we like music because its aesthetically and emotionally rewarding is fine. a lack of objectivity doesn't detract from those rewards in any way. theres nothing negative or hopeless about it, its just reality.

That just isn't realistic though. Subjectivity is the result of illusion, of deficits in knowledge, objectivity is what lies underneath. Objectivity exists (humans as its creators) because it serves a specific purpose. Yes, you can't point to a thing in the universe called 'cause and effect', accurately map out its confines, develop criteria for distinguishing cause from effect, etc. We treat it as real because it helps us, and the existence of a distinct, inhuman entity called 'cause and effect' isn't what determines its being or nonbeing, but rather the fact that it exists in our heads and acknowledgement of its existence (correct or not) helps us in our lives. The same applies for objectivity in art. Yes, there's no object out there that IS objectivity, but it IS an inherent byproduct of human consciousness. How does it help us? If you tried to evangelize this view to the rest of the population, they'd reject it outright. No one wants to hear that sleep token is every bit as valuable as coltrane. Even if you managed to wipe everyone's brains and revert to a pre-hierarchical view of art (whatever that is), one could be certain that the notion of objectivity would arise again because it is sourced from something so innately human that it must be said to exist. This brand of relativism has been tried and tried again and never proves popular, because it is simply too damaging to our livelihoods to adopt in any significant way. Even you yourself admit that you can not escape this thinking, and rather than say that it is wrong and we are diseased beings or whatever, maybe consider the idea that it may just be right after all. It is just another form of survival, where death (homogenous slop, boredom and apathy, lifeless existence) is avoided through adaptation and mutation (objectivity in art, creation of artistic hierarchy. We can keep talking about this in abstractions and broad strokes, but I don't see the point when its impossible to live by.

>jazz (I love how you throw classical in there even though no one is talking about classical) should not be rated with rock albums
But rap and pop is fine. Deranged thinking. I like Jazz but jazz elitists are embarrassing.
>>
>>131821383
rap and todays pop owe much of their form to rock music. they dont differ from each other in the way jazz, classical, and rock do. rap isnt that much different from bob dylan if you think about it. i dont listen to that much jazz btw

>No one wants to hear that sleep token is every bit as valuable as coltrane
I'm sure people who love Sleep Token and hate Coltrane would be fine with it. I don't care much for either. who's right? how do we tell? consensus? right now, if you go by consensus Sleep Token would probably come out on top. would you accept that as a valid assessment? or perhaps you mean consensus among people who have similar views to yourself? is that objectivity?
personally I have no need or desire to conjure any notion of objectivity to cling to as some kind of philosophical security blanket or hugbox. I think its a narrow and restrictive idea. I care even less how popular it is, that means no more to me that how many albums Taylor Swift sells. neither is an indicator of worth.

I found the vocals on Doolittle to be spergy and offputting. Then again I like XTC a lot and it's been a while since I've given the album a proper listen.
>>
>>131819678
desu, pretty much the only measure I use is catchiness + catharsis, that's what I value the most in music, melody + intensity, which is why I'd rate jazz, rap, and a lot of other stuff low, but would rate things like Iron Maiden S+
>>
>>131821619
would you still say the same thing if sleep token was replaced with ai music in that example?
if it works to not consider the possibility of objectives in art, then do you! but for me, and im sure anyone else who puts stock into the idea that it exists, it is the greatest motivating factor one could wish for. the idea that you need to put hours of effort and work into something for it to be passable, getting from 'i like this sound that i made but its bad' to 'i like this sound i that i made and its good' is a glorious feeling. if i rejected objectivity i would have no reason not to sit and smoke pot all day like i am right now, since its enjoyable and theres nothing worse about it than running your own business or something else. theyre two different philosophies and whichever works best for you, go ahead and use.
in defense of mine, eventually you run into this phenomenon - imagine objectivity is rock reviews, and rock is all that exists. you inundate yourself with the canon, and then one day you hear something you're unfamiliar with and find you really like it. you figure out what that song is, and find out its similarly regarded to the other stuff you like. that feeling is wonderful, the fact that you were able to pick something out that is highly regarded, among thousands of other possibilities, just like the scene in the last crusade, its simply beautiful and something to look forward to every day. im sure theres an equivalent phenomenon or something in your belief system. maybe im an asshole too but myself and most of my peers could never say that sleep token has any merit other than financial, its like saying 2+2=5 for someone like me.
