>this musician is bad"Why?">because someone else did their sound first 30 years ago"So do you hate the original sound too?">no it's goodWhat the fuck is the logic behind these people? You see them everywhere on /mu/ and everywhere on other music sites where their only criticism of a band is that it sounds like somebody else (as if that's a negative) but then have nothing but praise for the band it's supposedly ripping off. Shouldn't you be glad that there's more of the same kind of music that you like?
>>131816168Because being original is a quality in and of itself. AI could probably compose a nocturne in the style of Chopin today but that doesn't make AI anywhere near as genius as he was
>>131816174Bot post, nobody's talking about AI.
>>131816168I enjoy music cause of inventiveness of human self expression and the push for new frontiers.Making rehashes of 30yr old pop music is the exact opposite of what i want
I have a friend who loves King Crimson but thinks Black Midi is the worst thing ever and I feel like if he were being genuine he'd either love both, hate both, or at least love one and feel neutral/mildly enjoy the other.
>>131816168It's a simple question of artistic integtity.
>>131816168personally I think its because the spirit of innovation and artistry that inspired the original musicians comes across in the music. its not that I sit there thinking oh yes this was so original 4 decades ago or w/e when Im listening, its that the music is genuinely better because it contains real and personal human expression. if all an artist can do is select a pre-existing aesthetic and copy it, that lack of creativity is going to show, both in their performance and even more significantly in their songwriting.
>>131816290>>131816250>>131816191These.
>>131816290That's cool. I suppose genres are not allowed to exist because a band in 1971 copied a band from 1970.
>>131816336Has the band inspired by the original brought something original - a fresh look on the genre? Yes? That's absolutely fine then
>>131816336You're not a creative if you cant understand the nuance
yeah some people get pissed all the time if you say the song theyre showing you reminds you of something else even when its said in a positive way
>>131816352>>131816290Stop looking for novelty in everything and learn to enjoy quality.
>>131816363Everyone has preconcieved notions of the music they listen to - the parts of it that speak most to them are maybe oblivious to someone else who'll focus on a different aspect and offer their contribution to keep the convo semantically relevant, but will fail due to not fully understanding the first persons taste
>>131816378Stop playing 30 yr old riffs and make an effort of learing to something interesting by yourself, without needing a cheat sheet
i would wager people don't care much about originality unless it's relating to something they already care about. when you find a band you like and then you find their obvious inspiration, it's exciting because it's basically more of the same but from another time or perspective, so you get to see how the thing you like has evolved to become the thing you like in the first place.
>>131816391No. If i like sound XYZ, then i want more of it. I'm not gonna cry when i get it.
>>131816405thanks for proving yourself to be intellectually empty lmao

ugh.. these guys are doing the sound that i really like again, i hate it when they make shit i like...
>>131816437nothing makes me angrier than genres! aarrgghghhh there should not be genres, only 1 song! no one allowed to make something similar or i get very very mad.
>>131816168
>>131816378learn to readI literally said >>131816378that the lack of creativity and expression is going to show in the songwriting. ie, the fact that they're not creative means they'll write and play shit music. it might be superficially similar in sound or aesthetic to its inspirations but its likely to be empty and shallowstuff from decades ago isnt going to sound novel anyway, youre not even making sense on first principles let alone your misunderstanding of the actual point
>>131816451dumb fucking disingenuous retard lmaopeople in genres tend to compete with eachother and make their contributions to the genres relatively personalripping off popular bands from a few decades ago is what this thread is about, not whatever you are rambling about
>>131816336fuck that 1971 band, using guitars just like the 1970 band? how uncreative. i hate that.
>>131816451yeah genres are largely pointless. there should just be a rym top 5 for every style of music and that's what we should all listen to. why waste time on subpar trash

>>131816657you're here rambling on about genres, im talking shit like greta van fleet doing led zepellin (i know led zep stole songs, they made them popular tho) and hundreds of similar situations
>>131816661pic rel>>131816676you might not them. it but someone else might discover them before Zep and then get into Zep. if music was was just about who you ought to listen to instead of what you discover here and there it wouldn't be half as stimulating. not to mention since Zep doesn't really make music anymore GVF is just more of the same for anyone who wants it. if GVF is bad it's not because they're ripping off Zep, it's because they can't fill the shoes, which is a different matter entirely because it doesn't rule out some hypothetical band that could. it's lamost as petty as getting upset over bands who replace their singer to keep going.
>>131816703>bands who replace their singer to keep going.that fully invalidates the bands discography and existence to me. happened last with neurosis
>>131816703>pic relyou actually took that as an insult lmao that means it's true
>>131816711i'm kind of curious about what you think about the average singer song writer who knows they're not innovating but just wants to make a living or entertain people
>>131816715not a fan of eggs
>>131816720>make a living or entertain peopleno artistic integrity there.if you make art, it should come spontaneously. the urge to create should be equal to the urge to procreate. monetizing that is fine, but making something for the sole purpose of monetizing it is always reasonably obvious
>>131816731what other hobbies do you have?
i don't even need to read through the thread to know there's an npc with lower order "thinking skills" (lol) seething in post after post because it has no ability to actually be creative this is what happens when human breeding isn't carefully managed by intelligence and pragmatism and subhuman animals multiply instead, the animals become resentful of their natural conditions when examples of superiority are observed
do you guys actually like music cause you enjoy it, or cause it gives you a sense of superiority
>>131816739i mostly read hard science fiction books and cook
>>131816750i enjoy the music i listen to cause it gives me a sense of superiority
>>131816751im gonna assume you only spend maybe 30 minutes a day online if you don't consider it a hobby. but, if you think there is no artistic integrity in music as a trade or profession then you're shitting on a great deal of musicians, which is kind of counter intuitive
>>131816761yeah very few people alive are actual artists, you're not wrong in reading that from my posts

>>131817018>esl to bootlol time to work on your painful english jeet
OP seems like a simpleton, but some variation of that argument is valid. People are way too dismissive of music once they identify a reference point for it. Even the "original" musicians were building off of what other artists did. Almost nothing comes from wholly new cloth.

>>131817803>instead of clinging to and fanboying over the same handful of bands and labeling everything else as "generic" or a "copycat".i dont think you know what you're arguing against. my point isn't that old popular bands should be or stay popular. it's the lack of innovation and inspiration in people deciding to rehash the same ideas those bands already has decades ago.also >everything elseno, only the bands/artists who are shamelessly just going through the same motions there's plenty good, inspired art out there that draws from various influences, yet doesn't sound like any of those influences cause the music has passed through competent people with their own sets of skills who managed to mold those inspirations into something personal and effective, not just 'hey remember 30yrs ago?'

>>131816168That's a hack though. All artists steal but the good ones do it with some style and finesse. An inventive artist will steal from a variety of personally curated sources their audience would never be able to recognize. You're describing a hack stealing from recognizable sources everyone knows because they're either lazy and don't care or they're stupid. That or they think their audience is too stupid to know. So that's where you've landed, you're either defending stupid lazy hacks or you're too stupid to care that they're stupid lazy hacks. Basically you're admitting you're a dumb pleb.
