Don't get me wrong, he was brilliant, but there most have been some PR move to really mythologise him and use breathy statements about him "using the studio as an instrument" and all the shite around SMILE etc. When in reality he had some really mid solo albums and missteps along the lines of a Bowie level figure.
No yeah fr
A lot of it came from the American music scene's desperation to have someone of the stature of Lennon/McCartney. Wilson was glazed accordingly by a subset of critics and writers because there was no one else.

Imagination [Giant, 1998]Wilson's genius has never been as indelible or universal as worshipers believe. Generating illusions of eternal sunlight or crafting frames for crackpot solipsism, he was magical; stripped by Don Was or cambered by Van Dyke Parks, he was at least interesting. Submitting to adult-contempo tycoon Joe Thomas, however, he's just what you'd fear: a middle-aged pop pro who's proud he's no longer nuts and knows even less about the world than when he was. The lead cut has a happy tune, the dark finale some dysfunctional intimations. In between, he makes too much of attendant hacks and gestures at old glories from a failing high end. C
>>131818354it's as bad as the inexplicable Kanye genius meme
>>131818037No
>>131818037>there most have been some PR move to really mythologise him Well, yeah? "Brian Wilson is a genius" was literally a PR campaign pre-SMiLE to help give the Beach Boys some artistic legitimacy in the public's eye - and the pressure it put on Brian fucked him up for decades
