I 100% agree with this boomer and finally hearing someone in the industry say it is a breath of fresh air because it's something I've been saying for years. Using your platform as a soapbox is betraying your role as an entertainer and a performer. That's the problem with the music industry today. That's why all pop music is depressing as fuck now. The point of popular music is escapism. For some reason popular musicians have forgotten this

it's not as if the late 60s-early 70s weren't as politicized. it's not as if the 80s wasn't full of Brit synthpop acts whining about Thatcher or apartheid.

Vietnam protest music didn't become mainstream until Hollywood started romanticizing it in the 80s and 90s. Most people were listening to Bubblegum pop and The Beatles, whose strongest political position amounted to "Tankies are violent retards smoke weed and touch grass instead"

But people who use their platforms as a soapbox already have an audience that wants to see them do that. Nobody is going to a Metallica show to hear political talk so it’s not exactly a brave stance from him to be “apolitical” to an apolitical fanbase that spends $500 for nosebleed tickets.

Its a completely different demographic.
